I think you may be accepting someone else’s advice too easily. (Not mine, of course :-) I encourage you to experiment.
While I’m not doing Atkins, my diet is low-cal which necessarily means low-everything including low-carb. I’ve done a lot of experimenting running with 1500cal/day (i.e., 1000cal/day deficit) and it works - if you train your body to do it. This morning’s long run was 17M and I drank/ate only gatorade; used no gels.

My dreams are crushed. I can't believe they discontinued the 10miler!! And I thought about trying to pull off doing the race weekend with the group, but since we don't get a chance to do Disney very often, when we do it we go all out and stay out as late every night as possible. I don't think that combined with 48 miles would be a very good idea lol. I'll have to look into the Wine and Dine race. We usually go in OCtober because my little one is a huge Jack and Sally fan and it's the only time they are out and about. Have to do a little more research and see if they add a race in 2017.
