Summer 2016- New competition goals! Got the bug again!

2016- New year, going strong! Trying to drop a few and keep the muscle on :0)
2015- new year, new goals! Weekly progress pictures for me!

Update March 2012- Less than 10 weeks until Summer! Working a lot on new mind/body formats, and towards my TKD black belt. Gotta get those pics up... weight is about 124#, not bad, but not bikini ready for me!
Update March 2011-
Summer is only 8 weeks away! Trying to up the weights, get some endurance, and keep a fairly CLEAN diet! My newest passion is teaching my CAGE fitness classes... love it! Doing my progress pics monthly now.
Update August 2010-
Didn't drop those pounds for the summer, but defintely enjoyed it, around 18 percent BF. Short term goal (again) is to keep clean eats until Labor day, and (measurable goal) get my body fat a few points down. Also, plan to resume those am workouts, so up at 4:30am, here we come (measurable goal: 3 times/week- am workouts, 2 times/week-karate!)
Update February 2010-
Started back with weights, hooray!!! Decided to take the year off from competing (we'll see if that lasts!) and start training in Tae Kwon Do. Short term goal to drop about 8 pounds in 4 months (before the summer), keep up the weightlifting (measurable goal- lift 4x/week, varied/intense/compound), AND increase my flexibility (measurable goal: splits by the summer!)

My Life Lesson:

Live every day as if it's your last. I've heard this before, but now I truly believe it. After being laid off from my job in March 2009, which was traumatic in itself, an MRI/CT scan found a nodule on my brain. During those 2 weeks of uncertainty, I made provisions of what to do with the loves of my life- my 2 boys and my husband. Everything else I'd ever worried about really paled in comparison- what is more disheartening that thinking you won't be there for your babies as they grow up? I was given a second chance- even though I underwent brain surgery in Dec 2009, it was not malignant, and will not recur. I have also started a new job (june 2009), better than the last... everything happens for a reason.

From this point on, I will do everything I've dreamed of doing- our time here on earth is uncertain, but every day is a gift! I will make sure that I treasure it.
My Competition History:

My name is Tess, I entered my first figure competitions on October 25, 2008; and Nov. 8, 2008. I was happy to take 1st in Novice, 2nd in Masters, and 2nd in Open during my 2nd figure competition (USBF), qualifying to compete in Nationals! What a difference from my first figure competition, just 2 weeks prior top that. I posted details in my 11/8/08 blog, also pics are in the link below (with me on the flier!):

In August 2009, I competed in the NPC bikini division (new division) and did not place. In retrospect, I'm knowing that I didn't lean out enough, and it was during a crazy time of my life (layoff and brain tumor scare), but also wondering if this is the right division for me, and where to take my competition endeavors. I read somewhere that there are peaks and valleys in life, and competition should take place during the "peaks"... use the "valleys" for building, recovering, and preparing. You can't always stay at a "peak"... when you are there, take advantage of it. When you are not, build for it.

I have also competed in 2 National Pageant systems in 2000 and 2003, representing Ohio then Maryland at the Mrs. America and Mrs. United States Pageants. Competing must be in my blood, because every year or two I get the "urge" to do it again! Tae Kwon Do may be my next endeavor for competition.

It's been an interesting journey- learning a lot about diet, scheduling, discipline, and what motivates me. I've learned that I need a certain amount of carbs, how to pose and walk again, and how to kick up/change up my workouts. And that this is such a subjective sport- the most you can do is come in at personal best and hope that the judges like it.
My Workout and Diet Background:

I've exercised my whole life, more "hardcore" starting the spring of 2002. But never had a really "clean" diet... binge eating, lots of bar hopping, late night meals... I've been as high as a size 12 and as low as a size 00. Then... babies in 2004 and 2006 made me re-evaluate how important the time in the gym is, and how a clean diet is 80% of the battle. My genetics are a stumbling block (it's hard for me to put on muscle,) but I keep plugging away... Also difficult with working full time and my 2 boys.

I'll be blogging my journey for myself and to motivate others- I'd love to hear from others reaching for their goals!!!

Fitness Minutes: 186

My Goals:
1. Embrace my genetics.

2. Gain muscle/symmetry without getting "fat"... this will be ongoing over decades. Legs/glutes are my emphasis. Always work on this.

3. Compete in my first Figure Competitions on October 25, 2008, and Nov 8, 2008. Hear my babies screaming "Go Mommy!" from the crowd. DONE 10/25/08! WON 11/8/08!

4. Deadlift my body weight. - DEADLIFT- DONE 9/2009

5. Keep my boys the priority, and give them a positive, healthy mommy as a role model! Make sure that fitness/healthy eating is part of their life.

6. Diet- eat clean!

7. Sleep- get at least 7 hours a night. - doing this now, 1/2011

8. Get my black belt in Tae Kwon Do in 2013.

9. Try out for the TKD competition team.

10. Make teaching fitness classes part of my life.

My Program:
Pre-Contest Training plan 12 weeks out, as of August 4, 2008 (off season- cardio 2 days, abs 3 days, different split). Note that this will change closer to the contest...:
12 weeks out- cardio 2x/week. Re-assess in 4 weeks...

Monday: A.M: Legs/abs (1 hour); P.M. cardio 20-30 min, finish legs/abs

Tues: A.M.:Back/Rear delts/Bi/Abs (50-55 min). P.M.: cardio 4 weeks out

Wed:: A.M. Chest/Delts (3 exercises: 2 military, ant/lat)/Tri/Abs; P.M. cardio 4 weeks out

Thurs: Repeat Mon

Fri: Back, Trainer day

Sat: Repeat Wednesday ,"Leftovers" from Fri (back/rear delt/bi) . cardio 2

Sun: Cardio 3 /abs, then repeat.

6 weeks out: Peak: push/pullups, ballrollouts, quads/calves. Pose always 8 weeks out.

Competition Diet: calorie/carb cycle per my journal - it's a learning process! Right now: Carb cycle as per journal, 1300 cals/day average, 140g carb/30g fat daily. re-assess in 4 weeks.

Personal Information:
Accept what you cannot change, have the courage to change the things that you can. (i.e., Don't beat yourself up, AND, Just do It)
