After my tale on Dad's electrical problems, we found out today how lucky he was. A cold front came in yesterday and I tried to turn on dad's furnace so he would not get cold during the nite, but it would not work. At first, we thought that the pilot had gone out, but it was fine (hubby was a little scared on that one-he nearly got blown up in March trying to light it 3 days before his back surgery and ended up with 2nd degree burns on his hand and face. His heavy shirt saved his body). I tried to convince dad to come home for the nite with us but he refused so left him with his electric heater and electric blanket and he turned the heater off when he went to bed. Well, he got pretty cold and was miserable so this morning our office manager for the community put in an emergency call to the electric company that services the community and they were out in 30 min.
He quickly found the problem with the furnace-dad had been meddling with the fuses after hubby and friend (a retired electrician) had checked them out and he didn't get it in all the way so he caused his own problem there. Then he started tracking down the problem with two outlets. Well, the problem wasn't in those areas, but another outlet anda switch and inside the switch you could see burnt spots!!! That really scared us and was so glad we had them come out. Tonite dad is sleeping warm and I feel better about things.
Sometimes something good comes out of a bad problem. Had the furnace not quit, I am not sure we would have called the electrician to come out and in time there would have been a fire. Blessings come in many forms and this was ours for the day!
