OK folks I need personal testimonials for scar healing treatments

Friday, January 14, 2011

On Wednesday I got the 11 stitches out from the scar on my neck where the surgeon took out the gumball-sized lump on my lymph node. The pathology report has already come back and the lump was benign and was mostly chronic inflammation.

So now I have a 3 inch scar on my neck. My dear SIL and the surgeon both suggested using Mederma to help the scar heal and to look less noticeable. I looked up Mederma on Drugstore.com and saw that it was generally well reviewed but one reviewer did say to not use it on relatively new scars as it might cause tingling.

I am now curious about the other scar treatments options out there. Let me know what kind of treatments you have used to help scars heal and what kind of outcome you had as a result.

OK folks -- as a result of your suggestions, I have decided that Mederma is not the way to go. A good moisturizer applied a few times a day should suffice as it seems as te one thing I need to do is to massage the area. Thanks for saving me some $$$!!!

So glad to hear from you and that your lump was benign. As for the scar, per my doctor: Massage, massage, massage with Cocoa Butter with Vitamin E.

I'm so glad you learned that it was benign. That's the best news. My doctor said that anything works as long as you keep it moist. I like Neutrogena hand cream. We also tried the massaging on a big scar my husband had, but it didn't work as far as I can tell. In any case, the most important thing is that you are cured. Hurray for that!!!

I also went to an osteopath for a diff reason but she saw the terrible gall bladder scar on my belly that even indents - got infected inside and left to close on own. Anyway she said massage and it will get better even after all that time. She said to take the edges and just massage them also stop the growth of scar tissue. so gentle and soft but I could feel a diff. I didnt keep it up long enough to see a diff in the indentation. but as long as you are gentle can't hurt.

People also told me to use Mederma. My physical therapist, mainly. But the more important thing I found (and was also told!) is to massage the scar. I bought a small vibrating massager (sounds dirty, lol!) and diaper rash cream (yup, diaper rash cream) and massaged the scar daily. The massaging helps break up scar tissue and minimize it over time.

    Hope this helps!
