Soggy Camping Trip

Saturday, June 02, 2012

We planned this trip back in late February or early March and guess what, Beryl arrived and brought us some much needed rain but the timing could not have been worse for our camping trip.
Luckily I was keeping tabs on the weather and had most of the stuff loaded in the mh before we started getting rain late Sun. We talked to our friends late Mon and decided to go ahead with our trip since it was already paid for and we would not get much back if we cancelled so Tues morning we loaded up in a downpour (only had to put in our food) and by 10 am we were on our way to St. Augustine. We drove in rain most of the way there but it stopped just before we arrived which was nice as we could get set up without getting drenched. Actually it cleared up and after setting up, Vicky & I took a walk to the beach which was about 45 min from where we were camped.

This is Sonny, Vicky & DH sitting around the campfire on Tues eve. We actually got to have a campfire this trip. The rain started again later in the evening.

This is the lake that formed Wed afternoon behind our rv. We had been to the beach in the morning and I was just backing into our site when it started to rain and what a downpour for about 90 min. We weren't sure at one point if we were going to have to pull forward or not.

This is Sonny & DH surveying things from the backside of our newly formed lake.

DH standing by the mh with our lake in the background.

Look at the size of this gator. It was on display in the museum by The Old Jail in St. Augustine and was killed by a 12 yr old boy near Ocala, Fl. Glad I didn't meet this guy up close and personal.

This is Flagler College. This was once a hotel built by Mr. Flagler and now houses the college. Quite a place.

This is the winery in St. Augustine where we did a little taste testing. It is a sister to the winery near us-Lakeridge Winery in Clermont. Have to say I think they have better wines at Lakeridge.

One of the volunteers who met us as we entered The Old Fort-hooray for Golden Age Passport that DH has-it got all 4 of us in for free.

A view of the fort from the trolley.

The lighthouse as seen from the top of the fort.

Sonny & DH patiently waiting while Vicky & I explore the fort and take our pictures.

The cross that The Vatican gave to the Catholic church in St. Augustine when they were celebrating a special anniversary several years ago.

Look closely at this oak tree-there is a palm tree growing in the middle of it. This too is located in St. Augustine in a hotel parking lot.

This is a peacock that was in front of Ripleys Believe it or Not Museum. It had the tail spread out but I wasn't able to get it-someone was in my way and I was on the tram so couldn't move around!
We got back from our day in St. Augustine about 4:30-the tram company offered a free shuttle to and from the campground which was really nice and by 5:15 it was pouring down rain again. We were thankful it let us have the day to sightsee. It rained the rest of the night and into Friday. Vicky & Sonny lost their easy up as the rain didn't dump off like it should have. We had a real mess trying to clean things up so we could load up and when we got home about 3:30, I worked till about 6:30 unloading, cleaning and vacuuming inside and then washing the mh to get all the mud off it!
We had more generator problems so it is going back to the repair shop on Monday so wanted to have it ready to go. Because of the rain it was a little cooler and when it hit 93 today, I was happy I went ahead and got it done yesterday. Now to get the rest of the kinks out so we can take off on our long trip at the end of June.
In spite of the rain, we had a great time!!!!

We were coming home from Wyoming and were in West Virginia driving through rain. Lightening struck on a mountain off to our left and the POW woke up those that were sleeping in our car.

I am glad you all are safe. We were under tornado watches on Friday evening.
