It’s Official…. I Quit! (Diet Coke, that is)

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Yes, I believe I can make it official. It’s been 18 days since my last Diet Coke! I had previously been on a one or two (or three) 12oz can per day habit. I have been wanting to give this up for a long time, but I had been making so many other changes to the way I eat and to other habits, and a girl can only do so much.

Do you know how a can of Diet Coke tastes that is about one year past its expiration and has been sitting out in a hot garage? You know, flat and syrupy and metallic and gross? Well, that’s what I imagine it will taste like every time I have wanted one in the last 18 days. Water sounds pretty good by comparison.

For the caffeine, I bought myself a new coffee pot and made myself drink a cup of coffee every day until I learned to like it. It actually only took about 5 days.

So goodbye to the potential for increased risk of stroke, cancer, decreased kidney function, osteoporosis, and weight gain, and hello to a potential for a reduced risk of dementia and parkison’s disease! (For full disclosure, studies show an association between diet soda and these negative consequences, not causation. Not everyone thinks that it is beneficial to give up diet soda. But I did it anyway).

AWESOME. Congratulations!!! That’s great news, since I personally do believe that there’s likely a link between frequent soda (even diet) consumption and future health risks, so I’m glad you’ve made the change successfully :) emoticon

Good for you! I abandoned all diet soda about six months ago, going to water, and I never missed it. My addiction was Diet Dr. Pepper. And I always felt bloated and miserable after drinking it. emoticon

emoticon Good for you! I had given it up but a few days ago I had one and that led to more! I am back to water today and I am glad. I am going to track a streak for no soda!

    Keep on kicking the habit!

I do have my one cup of coffee about every morning with a couple TBSP of creamer ~ can't drink it black. Yuck. As you said a a girl can only do so much. LOL

I do find the days I drink my coffee I don't "crave" a pop, very rarely do I have both in the same day. Water is 99% of what I drink.

emoticon Your last sentence says that maybe you don't have to give up diet soda. Well, to paraphrase old Jewish humor, it may not help, but it can't hurt!! I think you are better off.

I was on the Atkins diet in 2003, and although I have long abandoned it, that (giving up diet soda) was the one thing I have retained. Except when I have something like a corned beef sandwich or possibly a hot dog, I just don't drink soda. I will have water or iced tea instead. I feel so much better off!! You will, too.

My husband first gave up coffee as he was drinking gallons of it a day. Yes gallons. The he went to diet coke until he suddenly realized it was out of control. So he went cold turkey two years ago. I told him to figure out how much that is saving and buy himself something to remind him of it. So he got a fancy new watch this year. He does feel better and now drinks lots of water and weak iced decaf tea. So good for you, giving up favorite things is so hard. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Addiction to Diet Coke is something that I soooo don't get. It has never tasted good to me. On the other hand, I absolutely HAVE to have my morning cup of coffee. So, I had to laugh when you said you "made" yourself drink a cup each morning. We all have our addictions that we'd be better off without. Congratulations for dealing with yours.

That's awesome! I'm so happy for you! I love that you shared this. This is probably a change I will make at some point in my future. And it really helps me to hear how you did this. Thank you! Keep up the good work! Thanks for the encouragement! Spark on! emoticon emoticon

Good for you! Now you have to treat yourself to some of those flavored coffee's! They really don't taste that different but the smell when it's brewing is wonderful!!

I myself use to drink lots of diet pepsi/coke but have really weaned myself from it with an occasional one every two weeks or so, but after reading your blog think it's about time I should be done with it!!

I gave it up in march after a 50 year addiction. I felt better almost immediately. I have more energy, more money and freedom from the compulsion to stop for a cold soft drink throughout my day. You will be sooooo glad!
