Time to Rethink Things-Reality Check

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Today was my 6 mo checkup at the doctor and I went in thinking I did pretty good. We have been gone for 2 months this summer and I managed to lose weight and not gain it even though we ate out a lot due to the heat-too hot out to cook and heat up the rv anymore! I had lost 10 lbs since my last visit and my cholesterol was below 200 and that was the good news.
However, she pointed to the results on my fasting blood sugar-125! Then she got a stern look and told me if that number was 126, I would be leaving with a script for a drug to take and an order for blood testing supplies. Then she proceeded to tell me I had to get serious about losing weight if I didn't want that to be my fate. I have 6 months to change the way I eat-even more!!! She suggested I give up fruit and limit my carbs even more. Then she told me I should read the book on the Dukan Diet. I left feeling pretty low but I am optimistic that I can take charge and not be another statistic.
My first stop was the public library to see if they had the book. The computer said it was in stock, but it was not of the shelf so I asked them to put a hold on it and I will pick it up when they get it. For now, I will limit my carbs and sugar and check this diet out.
I put my gym membership on hold while we were gone this summer so will get back to that the 1st of Oct.
I guess we all seem to take our health for granted so this was my reality check - do you have anything in your life you need to get real about. Don't wait till it is too late. I have a chance to turn things around and my fate is in my hands.

I think you did well and now realize you have to clamp down a bit. You'll be fine. Like I always say "do your future self a favor and take care of your bodies today". I've said that so often lately to so many different people. emoticon

Pat, I'm sorry you got that news, but I'm confident you will take care of it. Good luck with all you're having to do.

I was surprised at that news, since you had done so well - 10 pounds lost, Cholesterol good, etc.

    Hang in there emoticon

    Hi Pat
Look at your physician visit this way -- you got the warning without the disease reaching you first. Now is the time to nip your blood sugar in its tracks, get knowledgeable (Knowledge is Power:)) and eat for your health. You can do this. You are a very determined individual:) Sending big hugs your way. Don't feel discouraged by that information -- feel empowered. Now you know what you are fighting/protecting against.

Yes Pat, the same for me. The ultimate reason I joined Sp was to lower my higher risk for diabetes. I eat a fraction of the sugar I used to before I joined but if I dont get more weight off, I'll regret it later. I try to keep inspiration from people who've told me they wished they took care of themselves earlier. So lets do this - I'll cut down if you will! Lol.
    Thanks for sharing this
