Surgery is Over
Monday, October 29, 2012
It has been a long day but surgery was a success. We left home at 6:30 and a good thing as there was a bit of a holdup getting checked in. We did get all checked in a few minutes after 7 and then they let us cool our heels for more than 30 minutes so guess I need not have worried about arriving late. The nurse finally came to get DH about 7:40 and told me they would let me come back once they got him ready for the surgery. After an hour, I questioned the lady at the desk and she said sometimes it takes longer for some patients and I should be patient so I walked the halls and waited some more!!! When it got to 2 hours, I went and insisted she call and find out what the problem was. They finally let me come back to see him but didn't get to visit much-they were still doing things and then the anesthesiolgy dr came to do his nerve block so I got sent back outside the curtain to wait. I did get to give him a kiss before they whisked him away to surgery at least.
I did meet the nurse who was going to be assisting with the surgery and she told me she would call me when they started. They sent me back out at 10:40 and she didn't call till 11:20 so not sure what took so long as she told me it usually took about 20 min prep once they got into the operating room.
After he call, I decided to get a bite. It was a bit of a challenge in the cafeteria, but I settled on a chicken breast and some steamed broccoli. I was glad when the nurse called about 12:30 to say that surgery was still in progress and she would call when it was finished. A little before 1 our friends, Don & Lin, stopped by and stayed with me until he was out of recovery. The dr came to talk to me about 2:15. He told me that surgery went well, but it ended up being more extensive than what he thought. He had 3 pages of pictures to show me what it looked like before and after he repaired things. He had a lot of technical terms but was certain that with everything wrong in there it is no wonder DH was in so much pain.
We finally got home around 5 and I got him settled in. I had to go to the clubhouse and get more ice for the bucket and get everything all hooked up. I finally got to sit down and relax about 6:30! Then the phone calls so now I am letting all my Spark friends know that DH is resting comfortably, he is going to need quite a bit of therapy but the dr thinks he will do fine.
I am very tired tonite so going to get some rest.
