Why do friends do things to sabatoge you????

Thursday, November 01, 2012

Today, friends we haven't seen in about 6 years came to visit my DH. We met when we were both fulltimers-lived in our RV's solely. They settled down in OK about 6 yrs ago and have just sold their home-again-and have hit the road. They just arrived in Fl this week and it was wonderful to see them again, BUT she brought 6 donuts to DH! Now she knows I am on the Dukan Diet as she has been wanting to start it too so why would she do this. DH has been limiting his intake on sweets also-he gets a donut once a week and that is it. So why would she do something like this???
DH is going to get one tomorrow and then we are going to find someone to give the rest of them to as that one chocolate long john has been calling to me ever since it walked in the door but I tell it to shut up, I am not going to listen to it and I definitely am not going to shoot myself in the foot and eat it!!
I struggled for almost 10 days when I started this diet-I had a killer of a headache as my body went thru some kind of withdrawal from the abrupt end to my consumption of sugar and carbs but I finally got past it and I am not going back there if I can help it.
Hmmm, maybe I just need to go put that chocolate long john in the garbage disposal and show it who is boss!

I hope you threw it away when you were strong! I am not sure why friends sabotage. I can only guess it was not intentional if she is a good friend. People need to learn that a "hostess" gift doesn't have to be food if that is what it was.....

I think the majority are right here. Toss the donuts and call it an exercise of mind over matter. I came from the era where our parents wouldn't let us throw food away. It took me forever to get out from under the clean plate syndrome. I actually had to throw food away on purpose just to break that "spell". As for why would someone do that? Could even be diet sabotage but probably better you think of it as a senseless mistake...

This is going to happen again. You were gracious when you accepted them and you found out that you are stronger than the temptation and this is to be admired.
I am sure that there will be some neighbor that you can give them to.
OR, you could freeze them separately and give one to your DH once a week as you usually do.
Friends can be well meaning or act as enablers.

Like was mentioned, there was a time when that was the accepted thing to do,,,bring food over, and still a lot of people bring food of some sort over with them when they visit.

Don't let one little donut undo all the good you have done
so far. As for DH, he doesn't need to endanger his health
either. Just tell her "doctor's orders" and move the
    donuts out of the house.

    Deirdre said it so perfectly!
    I understand your dilemma.
Friends have dropped off a pan of apple bars
Parents dropped off 2 apple pies
Friends dropped off a batch of monster cookies &
a batch of roll out ginger cookies in Halloween shapes.
Then ended up buying halloween candy as I heard people were coming over.
I am a sweet-a-holic and have a hard time throwing out for the cost and love
that went into all the baking.
I love my family and friends dearly.
BUT! Like you said, they know we are on diets per doctors.
    You've made it so far.
    You are doing so well!
You will not be happy with yourself if you give in.
And it won't even taste as good as you remember.
    Sadly, I know!

I think often those gifts are brought because there was a time when they would have been appreciated. The gift giver just wasn't really thinking ... or was thinking along the lines of "Hey! I can't wait to see them -- I'll bring a treat to make the visit special". And that's where the thinking stops. No "Oh! I forget -- they're eating healthy these days ...":)

Separately, I know it seems ... sacreligious ... but there is nothing wrong with throwing a doughnut in the garbage. They are garbage in our system -- no nutritional value whatsoever and they are actively detrimental to our health. so, chuck it and don't feel bad about doing it. Now, throwing out fruits and vegetables ... that's BAD:)

    Enjoy your visit!
