We make plans and God laughs

We had a busy week planned. I guess God had other plans as DH is in the hospital and all those plans have gone out the window-so to speak. He has been feeling bad for about 2 weeks. No fever, but just feeling off most days. It always seemed that he would feel pretty good in the mornings and get to feeling bad as the day wore on. Since he had radiation this year we tend to blame that for a lot of things. And he had surgery on his shoulder about 6 weeks ago and has started his outpatient therapy so also lay blame there too. However, I should have trusted my "mom" instincts and made him go to the dr sooner.
I did call his urologist office on Mon and the nurse said they could not get him in until Thur. She didn't even suggest he come in and let them have a urine sample to test although she was given his symptoms. Well, come Tues morning he was having chills and started running a fever and it was climbing rapidly so I called the family internist and was told to come right in. They ran his urine and by this time his temp had climbed to 103 so he was sent straight to the hospital. It had climbed from 100 to 103 in just a matter of 2 hours!
There were no beds available for a direct admit so the dr had to send orders with us for the ER and we spent the next 8 hours there. They started the testing-lots of bloodwork, chest x-ray and EKG and once they had all the blood draws done, they started him on antibiotics.
He finally got a room upstairs about 9 PM. I had come home not long before that to try to take care of things here since I was gone all day. Imagine my surprise when I called the ER to check on him and found out he was moved but they didn't give me the room #! It took me 3 calls, but I finally tracked him down-or at least talked to his nurse as it was late so I didn't want to wake him in case he was asleep but at least I was assured he was doing well and fever was still receding.
Today they have continued tests and he is on antibiotics around the clock. He has seen his internist, his oncologist, his pulmonary dr and they brought in an infectious disease dr who we have never seen before. They feel they are on the right track and still waiting on his blood cultures to pinpoint exactly what is going on. If he continues to improve, he will likely get to come home later Fri or Sat and have to take oral antibiotics.
He definitely has pneumonia and an x-ray will be repeated tomorrow to see if he is getting better. The pulmonary dr thinks that it may be a secondary infection - he has a UTI and she thinks it spread there thru the blood. I suspected a UTI last week but MEN are sooo stubborn. I should have dragged him in sooner and things might not have gotten this bad.
Praying this does not damage his kidneys as they are already compromised.
