Yard Sale

Saturday, February 09, 2013

The community we live in does not allow individual yard sales but holds an annual community wide yard sale and it only costs $5 to participate. We have never held one of our own, just purchased things we could not live without from our friends and neighbors but this year dear DH decided we should try to sell some things we needed to get out of our way so we worked Fri morning getting set up and Fri afternoon the local residents got to come around and do an early buy because on the day of the sale we are all too busy manning our stuff! I purchased 2 pr of capri pants as I am needing some in smaller sizes. I actually ended up with 3 pr for $3. One lady gave me a pr since they were stained! I plan to cut them off and make shorts out of them since washing didn't clean them.
Today I was up at 6 am and got in a couple miles before helping DH open things up at home. The sale was scheduled to begin at 8 but we had folks coming in at daylight! The flow of people was pretty steady from a little after 7 until about 11 and then folks just trickled in. We finally shut things down about 1 and felt good that we had gotten rid of quite a bit and didn't have a lot to haul back in. We were disappointed we didn't sell our neutron lawn mower. It is battery powered and is an expensive item and we priced it about 1/5 of the cost of it new and one lady told us she had spent even more recently to get a new one. We just weren't willing to come down to where we didn't even get the price of the new battery we purchased about a year ago!
The best news of the day is that we think we have our RV sold. A man and his wife looked it all over and dickered with DH over the price and they all finally agreed on one and he says he will move some money around and be down in a week or so to get it. He shook hands on it and we can only hope he will come back. We had another man who kept telling us he wanted it and strung us along for almost 3 months and finally admitted this week he wasn't going to buy it. We held it for him all that time when we could have been working to sell it so a bit put out on that score! Oh well, it just wasn't meant to be. We loved our RV travels but DH's health is such that we aren't comfortable doing it any longer so this is for the best.
The best thing is we made enough today that DH can take me out for a nice Valentine's dinner and it helped to pay for our refrigerator repair.

Sounds like you got great buys on the capris. Good for you. See, that lady didn't want/need them any more and you made out like a bandit. LOL I'm with you about the lawn mower - you're not giving it away. And for that matter, if you do give it away (Goodwill, Salvation Army) you can get a good tax deduction. But maybe next time someone will be willing to pay the little bit you're asking for it.

Have my fingers crossed that the man who spent that much time looking the RV over and dickering with your DH really will come back and buy it. Shame on that other man who strung you along.

I'm glad things are going well right now. Enjoy your daily walks. : )

I'm glad the sale was a success. Sorry you had to sell the RV, but it sounds like it is for the best.

Sounds like you have been very busy.

The RV sounds like a dream still to me at 41 I am sooo

looking forward to our RV and travels. Of course getting

a decent RV at a good price... well one we can afford lol ..

I recon that is why we must save.

I do not look forward to that phase being finished

but still look forward to it starting. The flip side is my

Aunt is in her 80's and still acts like 40 ... A wonderful

lady and we all must remember we may live to be 110

with todays medicines and awesome technology.

I hope the best for your hubby and hope his health

will turn around even more as with your great help

    I am sure it is.

Somehow, something good comes from decluttering. But it
takes patience and perserverance to stand your ground
when you have to. I don't blame you for staying firm on the
price of the lawn mower. And good luck selling your RV.
You are making the best decision for you both. Enjoy your
special dinner and the special love of your life. HUGS!

Hope your RV sells. I think it would be neat to have one, but with things the way they are, and your would have to worry, Where you go, and How People are. But they always looked so neat.

emoticon Sounds like your sale went well! We live in a Community that also only has a one day a year "Garage Sale". One year we were not even planning to participate, and my son happened to be sitting outside our garage with the garage door up, and ended up selling a washer and dryer we had moved with us and had planned to sell another way, a set of tires we did not know what we were going to do with, some storage shelves we no longer needed and some other odds and ends we moved with us and had no idea what to do with because we did not need them anymore. He ended up making enough to buy all of us dinner and stash some into savings!!!!! And all because he happened to sit out with an open garage (full of items we had moved but no longer needed).
