Valentine Wildlife Refuge

Monday, February 01, 2016

Interesting mural on a bank building in Nebraska-we had stopped to eat our lunch at a restaurant across the street and was intrigued by this mural. My photo really doesn't do it justice.

We stopped at a wildlife refuge/conservation area in northern Nebraska and was surprised to see this large herd of buffalo.

We stopped at the Visitor Center in the refuge and got a look up close at a stuffed buffalo and learn some interesting facts while there.

This big bull came right up to the fence-these animals are HUGE!

This cow and calf also came close to the fence.

As we were leaving the refuge, we came upon this small waterfall.

Sometimes it is good to get off the beaten path and go to the smaller places-not well marked or advertised but gems none the less. We all enjoyed spending a few hours in Valentine National Wildlife Refuge even thought it was drizzling rain. We also saw lots of little prairie dogs but I can't seem to locate their pic so going to have to go thru more-I took over 500!
Hope you enjoyed this portion of our trip.

We were going down a road, stopped and took pictures with Chimney Rock, Nebraska in the background. There was nothing around and it looked like you could see miles down the road in either direction. When we went to cross the road for the picture, my husband who was on the other side, yelled, "Look out!" I didn't know if there was a snake near me or what! I ran as fast as I could across the road and he was holding his belly laughing at me along with our son, his fiancee and our daughter's in-laws. He thought I thought a car was coming.

We went to Sheridan, Wyoming for our daughter's wedding and while there, we visited Yellowstone National Park. Son's girlfriend was taking a picture of a buffalo when it charged. She managed to get into the car and we had to stomp on the gas to keep it from butting the car. It followed us for quite a ways. We think that the flash on the camera accidentally went off and that caused it to charge. They are massive and muscular.

I love the West, thank you for sharing with us!

Loved seeing your pictures. There is a buffalo farm about two hrs from where I live. They are interesting to look at.
