Fortified my track to glide over hurdles

For the months since December I have been immersed in first caretsking and now in helping my mom sort through a house full of memories before putting her home on the market. And in the process of everything I put my own needs on some proverbial shelf.

I spent only one or two nights in my own home and then was so exhausted that I never did much to make it feel like home. Instead it has become like a furnished, stagnant-air-filled closet.

As I often say to others, sometimes Life gets in the way and we get side-tracked!

Knowing that some form of change must be injected into this new and ongoing schedule, I resumed more of my walking, took my resistance bands up to the lake and decided to get back on track... big time.

Watching my dad decline and suffer for five months made me acutely aware that while my heart and other organs test as healthy, heart health needs to be a priority...even for those of us believing our heart's are "okay"!!

And I am very overweight. The fact is that excess pounds we haul around are a burden, not considered healthy weight-bearing exercise!

How could I get the support needed to refocus when so immersed in an ongoing and tiring project to help my mom cope with widowhood after 70 years of marriage...even as she prepares to sell her home and live alone in an apaetment...for the first time in her 91 years of life?!?

The answer: get real-life support that forces me to stay on track!

So two weeks ago I joined TOPS.

First meeting weigh-in was six hours after eating.

Week one: weigh-in was about 3 hours after lunch. I lost 3 pounds.

Week two: ate just before the meeting along with 20 ounces of 2 percent milk.... and showed no change in weight. Which means i actually lost weight again.

Next week:
Who knows? What counts is that I am on track, by combining the support of SP friends and the 55-plus Females Team with the accountability of weekly weigh-ins.
My mom is enjoying my "bikini plate" way of eating. Like the wonderful strawberries that found their way into three meals. When I told her half the plate will now be fruits and veggies, she had some doubts. But seems to be embracing the formula!

while staying at the lake I have been slowly increasing the number of times I walk down to the lakefront, then uphill to the back of the property. Goal is to make the track without needing to stop at the top of the hill to catch my breath
Oh, yuh... this really IS cardio, folks!!

Well, that long blog pretty much sums up where I "am" in this long turtle jouney. My main goal never changed. I want to be healthy. But interim goals and methods are flexible enough to keep life interesting along each bend of the way!

    Good approach Sam. I am now rethinking my plans. I got gung ho to go to University
    but not so sure now. Qantas has put some low fares again, so I am hoping my son
    starts work soon. Then we shall see. Love the pictures of the lake. You will stay fit

    You're taking exactly the right approach - figuring out what works for YOU at THIS stage in your journey. You haven't stopped, You haven't gone backward. You've figured out a way to continue forward that fits for where you are right now. We're right there with you, cheering you on!
