I got the privilege of going on a short birthday trip with a girlfriend the last few days. (Our birthdays are eleven days apart.) Went to a new to me place--St. Joseph, Michigan. Got to see some different from central Indiana views.
Saw a swing bridge. Built in 1904, it swings across the river in about 42 seconds to make an unbroken set of train tracks. It holds both passenger and long freight trains. A marvel of engineering. Here it is unlocked.
Now it is ready for a train:
During boating season someone is always in the little house to lock the bridge so trains can use it and unlock it after for boats. In the winter, the bridge stays locked all the time, and there is no need for someone to stay with it. --A marvel I'd never heard of before last Thursday night!
All this action was right near Silver Beach, where there is an adult size splash park, a building holding a carousel from their amusement park heyday, and a wonderful beach. The splash park is off on the left, and the carousel building is on the right. Both were packed Thursday night and Friday afternoon. The picture was taken Friday morning. (Friday was a rather brisk day - great for getting in lots of steps.)
We explored the lighthouse area on the far side of the river as well. Here I am on the long pier that ends at the lighthouse.
The last picture I've got is rather whimsical, and a fitting end to a great trip. We saw it on our way back in northern Indiana:
We experienced lots of other things, and got good memories to store up. New experiences and different perspectives are like a welcome breath of fresh air. Hope you are enjoying your summer too!
