The Sun Still Shines

Thursday, April 02, 2020

Today I focused on bringing calmness and serenity into my life. This is a picture of Tulum that I took many years ago, and thought it fitting for today's goal of calmness and serenity.

I spent the afternoon working on my yard in the nice sunny weather. It is that time of year in Tucson where the weather is just turning from late winter to early summer - it's usually a short period of time where the weather is just spectacular, and today was one of those days. I grow and collect lots of weird succulents, so there is always something to do with the plants I have everywhere. Somedays it can be a bit of a chore, but today it was a welcome distraction.

I have a big running list of various projects I'd like to work on around the house. The movement on the list has been somewhat slow, and I was originally feeling like I ought to be more productive given the extra time I have had these days. But sometimes - taking it easy and spending a little bit of downtime can be a good thing.

I ate within my calorie budget today, and got 10k steps which partly included a 45 min walk around my hilly neighborhood. I do need to work on going to bed at a more regular time each night to ensure I get sufficient sleep so I am recharged. I think tomorrow my to do list will include phoning a few friends I haven't seen or talked to in awhile.

Best wishes to each of you.

That picture is beautiful! You’re probably having nice weather there in Tucson. My brother winters there. Here in Ohio it’s barely getting warm, but today is nice and I worked in my flower beds.

The Tulum scene does indeed look peaceful. There's nothing more deeply calming than just looking out at an ocean. We had a little beach house when I was little, and back then the island was pretty deserted, and when we would go there in the winter, I would always go down and sit on the steps leading down to the beach and say goodbye to the ocean while my mother packed up the car and cleaned the house before we went home. There was no one on the beach--it was just me and the ocean. This was S.C., so the ocean was grey, nothing like the tropical blue or green you see in the FL panhandle or Caribbean. That was very soul-stirring to my ten or twelve-year-old self. Haven't done that in ages, and sure wouldn't be able to do it on that same beach any more as it's completely developed with lots of year-round residents.

I'm being too long-winded, but anyway--thank you for that photo, which took me back and reminded me that yes, yes, yes spending down time can be very important, especially in our much too goal-oriented world. Your projects will surely get done, just like my messy desk upstairs will someday be all neat and attractive again.

Take care and have fun talking with your friends!
