Yes, I'm still alive and 25 pounds lighter

Since I'm Catholic and it was my thing to give up candy or cake or ice cream or some other calorie dense food for Lent, Ash Wednesday has always been a logical starting point for me to make changes to my eating habits. This year was no different. In past years, sometimes it worked well but often times it did not. Giving ups goodies can make six and 1/2 weeks seem like an eternity. Although I've made some progress cleaning up my act, there are still plenty of teeth gritting moments - make that hours - and nagging self-doubt. After a couple of run ins with half-price chocolate Easter eggs, left-over chocolate Teddy Grahams, and a four-serving pan of brownies that I turned into a single serving, I got on the scale this morning and found I have lost 25 pounds.

Through the duration of Lent, the world has been turned upside down and has had a profound affect on all of us. I am very lucky that I can work from home. Although I love them dearly, my only companions are my kitties, and it gets a bit lonely. However, it does make physical distancing from food a lot easier. It also helped I didn't have a stash of my usual stress reducers in the house. When I shop, I try to get in and out the the grocery store as quickly as possible. I am very lucky to have a well-stocked fruit and garden market within a 10 minute drive. When I venture out, I come home with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Purchasing eggs, milk, bananas, etc., has never been a problem. Too bad they don't carry toilet paper. I've made very tasty soups, chili, and casseroles and have not used the same recipe twice. I'm wild about topping a small baked potato with cottage cheese and cooked broccoli. Keto is not in my vocabulary. I like brown rice too much and have made dishes with whole wheat pasta. This afternoon, I made Hearty Hamburger Soup, but I used ground turkey. Good stuff!

Not being able to go to the gym has been hard on me, but I belong to a fitness center with wonderful instructors. I've been able to go on Facebook and take live classes. What a blessing! One of our insurance carriers has a gym and is offering stay-at-home fitness challenges. For example, do 10 squats every time you go to the bathroom. I've been drinking a lot of water, so I'm doing a ton of squats. The trainers are posting work-out videos, and I've found a few I really like. Now that the weather is finally getting better, I can go outside and do some yard work. On Friday, we got three inches of snow, and today I mowed the lawn.

Although I'm grateful I have a job, working from home is a challenge. Not being able to grab a cookie to deal with the stress is hard. Sometime, it's so frustrating that I want to cry. I often spend between 9 and 10 hours a day remoting into the office. When I finally back away from my PC, I am burnt out and spend very little time on Sparkpeople. I miss all my wonderful friends, and I hope to reconnect soon. Do stay safe. I think about you often.

    I'm so glad you're hanging in there during these interesting times! Even those of us who are introverts are struggling some with this "self-isolating" - we were MADE for community, and even though the cats are good company it isn't the same as having people to casually talk with. On the plus side, it sounds like this spring has been an AWESOME time for your eating habits! Even though you hit some bumps in the road (and don't we all?) you picked yourself up, dusted yourself off, and continued to head in the right direction. And those healthy habits have REALLY paid off!!!

    What a very nice surprise to see that you have posted again. You have been missed!

    Congrats on the 25 pounds gone. " I've been drinking a lot of water, so I'm doing a ton of squats." big smile, chuckle.

    Life has changed drastically in the past few weeks. It hasn't all been bad. In face, there are some positive things that I'd like to see stick around: less traffic, cleaner air, most people are much friendlier. You have good neighbors, so I imagine waving and hollering, "Hi" continue for you.

    If the weather ever settles down, it will be time to plant a garden. Missouri is in stay-at-home, so I hope the farmers' markets will be open for business. I would think the open air markets will be safer than the brick and mortar stores.
