Today is my son's 35th birthday!!
Goodness how time flies - seems like just yesterday he wasn't even tall enough to look over the bathroom sink counter and all I could see were tiny little fingers at the edge and him peering up at me.
I am and always was a single mom and I had him late in life (34) so I had all my play time behind me and wanted a future. I never found being a single parent as a disadvantage and he couldn't play me against a dad so it was my house my rules.
Did I struggle along the way? Sure - what parent doesn't. He was very ADD - had really bad grades in school (really bad) - didn't go to school because he said he never felt well)
But through it all I never gave up - I was my only child's only advocate
I got him on medication for ADD - got him into Boy Scouts (he's an Eagle Scout) - got him to a doctor and found our he was had depression - got him in a different school. He began to flourish
He got himself a job at 18 - went into fire/ems training at 19 (while working full time) - and then changed course after working retail for 10 years (making no more than 9.60 an hour even while pretty much running the store) and went into logistics - he dropped out of fire/ems - got a job at Williams Sonoma in their warehouse while going to Columbus State Community College for logistics (online courses) and is now one of their routers for several east coast areas as well as a Denver hub and is doing his Bachelors in logistics management at Franklin University making the Dean's List (all online)
I couldn't be prouder of the man he's turned out to be.
