Why I want to lose more weight

Wednesday, October 21, 2020

Since joining Spark People I have lost a little over 50 pounds. I have gone from a size 20 to an 8. People say why do you want to lose more weight you are where I want to be? But I am not where I want to be. I started out on Spark People weighing 210 and not very happy with the way I looked. I was able to do everything I wanted but I was not happy. I set a goal of 135, I am now 158. I am closer to my goal but I am not at it. I want to accomplish the goal set by me. I am told I look good but I do not see it yet. Yes I look a lot better than I did before but I still see myself as being too thick. I need to be thinner to feel I have met my goal. I am on a good eating program and plan on reaching my goal before my birthday next year. I plan on losing at least 3 pounds a month, slow and steady is the way to win this race.

I totally understand what you are saying.
As a young woman I weighed 118 pounds and no one called me skinny.
Now at 135 pounds I'm called skinny all the time.
I think as society has gained weight over the last 30 years our perceptions have changed.
2/3 of the population are overweight, obese or worse. Look at the photos from 50 years ago compared with today.
We each have to do what feels right to us and disregard the perceptions of others.

I think you look wonderful and healthy now, Kathryn; but I respect your desire to lose more weight. It's your body and totally up to you.

You look really good where you are at now. Maybe lose a few more lbs if you want, but I think losing another 23lbs will be too much.

I don't normally say 'because I did this or do that you should too' however a while after I started my weight-loss my Registered Dietitian set an end-goal of 70kg (154lb). She had said she wanted to see how things went first before putting that end weight out there. I am 1.665m (5' 5 1/2") When I got to 70kg, my Dr at that time told me he did NOT want me going below. He had no idea what weight the Registered Dietitian had wanted me at. My BMI at that weight was in the slightly overweight range, however as most medical experts will tell you, that is only a guide. Since then, two more Dr's have told me the same thing. The thing is, my family had told me I had lost too much weight and it was showing. The first Dr told me I was starting to look gaunt at that weight which is one of the reasons he didn't want me to lose more.

How did I see myself? I KNEW I had lost a lot of weight (63lb) and I KNEW that I was wearing a lot smaller clothes, down from 20-22 to a mostly 12-14, however I still saw 'fat' when I looked in the mirror.

This is what I caution you to be careful about. How we see ourselves is not necessarily accurate. Our minds tend to distort things somethings.

There are a couple things that I suggest you do:
    * Get your body fat measured. Most gyms will do that for a small fee, but make sure it is done with skin-fold calipers and the person who does it is properly qualified to use them. It may be that you just need to concentrate on muscle toning through strength training. I know you do Strength Training. Mat Pilates is particularly great for toning/strengthening the deep-core muscles. You can even drop a couple dress sizes because of it, even if you don't lose any weight.

    * Talk with your Dr and be advised by him/her.

    Good luck,
