Our blog assignment for week four of the Aspire and Inspire BSG challenge teams is: Our focus this month has been on stretching and relaxing.
What are some of the benefits of stretching?
Some benefits of stretching that I have noticed are: improved flexibility, relieve stress; improves my workouts.
Do you stretch before or after exercising? I have always heard that you have to have warm muscles before stretching and, for that reason, I stretch after my workouts. In yoga I have learned that you really need to warm up and prepare your muscles for the poses so it seems to make sense to me that I should warm up after exercising, not before. However, when I am walking if I am feeling tight, I will do stretches partway through my walk which seems to help also.
Do you feel it's important to exercise? I have a few physical problems with pain and I have learned that I feel better when I stretch after or during my exercise. Therefore, I do believe it is important to stretch when you exercise.
What are some of the stretches you like to do? Some of the stretches I have found helpful are:
(1) low lunge, standing
(2) wrap one foot behind the other foot and fold forward toward the ground (repeat with other foot wrapped around)
(3) seated forward bend
(4) seated forward bend with one leg extended and the other leg bent with foot touching knee of extended leg (repeat with other leg extended)
(5) cobra pose
(6) neck rolls; and
(7) legs up the wall
What are some of the ways you like to relax? Knitting, card making, scrapbooking, reading, crafting, and watching Hallmark channel.
Do you take time to relax during the week when life can be busy? I always try to find time each day to relax. Usually I relax a couple times during the day, mid-day and in the evening. Even if I get home late, I take a few minutes to relax before going to bed.
