Expected but unexpected at the same time

Thursday, November 05, 2020

A week or so ago I went in to see my orthopedic surgeon about my new ACL and to see what damage had been done to it after getting it caught on the edge of the steps going down to our basement. The MRI showed that it was partially torn but there's enough of it left that I should be alright. At that time I talked to him about my left knee. I told him that it had been hurting me lately, that it gives out on me sometimes and that 10 or more years ago I had done something to it. I thought I had torn the meniscus (the soft cartilage) between the femur, tibia and fibula. I never had it checked out at the time because we were pretty poor and I didn't really trust the doctor's in the part of Missouri that we lived in. He had an MRI done on that knee. It turns out that I tore that ACL all those years ago. I expected that the meniscus might be partially torn but I didn't expect the ACL to be completely torn. (Sigh)

I could not do anything about it but from my understanding you can have long term problems if you don't do anything about it. Since it's been so many years I may have problems in the future but I will definitely have problems with that knee in the future if I don't do anything about. So, I will be having surgery #3 for this year. My surgery is set for November 23rd and post-op appointment will be November 25th. I'll probably start physical therapy a few days to a week later. We've had a lot going on and while I don't need more stress right now, I'd rather get it over with so I don't have to think about it anymore. My surgeon is great and I trust him more than any doctor I've ever had before. Wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed that this will be my last surgery ever! I know people who have had more surgeries than I have but I'm hoping this, being my 11th surgery in total, will be my last one! Doing my best to keep a positive attitude through all of this.
