I remember the day all too well. It was in the late 80’s. I was washing my hands in the lady’s restroom when another woman stepped up, and asked:

“When is it due?” I thought, “When is what due?” .. But when her eyes fixed upon my belly-- I knew. My Twinkie's were showing! And all that I ate in secret--the pizza—the popcorn, you name it! (But as they say--what we eat, we end up wearing!)

I only kidded myself, thinking my blousy shirt was hiding “Only" an extra 20 some pounds conceived by indulging in an assortment this-that-‘n-the other. The picture tells the story.



What I did in secret was telling on me. I wasn’t kidding anyone but myself. emoticon I was a junk food junkie! There is no nice way to put it.

How did I get away with it for so long? I suppose my diligence to exercise, plus I was still younger and had a good metabolism. But the day came when I had to pay the piper!

Hostess twinkies—an occasional maple bar, buttery microwave popcorn, and ice cream cone now and then. Weekend pizza night out, followed by Oreos for dessert. And I’m not going to lie and say, “Well I wasn’t as bad as some!” We were also programmed to step right up for ‘concessions’ before watching a movie! After all, that was tradition!



That was many years ago. The woman’s words stung, but so does a shot in the arm! Yet, both can save my life—so I swallowed hard—(the truth-not junk) and bit the bullet! To add insult to injury came the comment by my oldest daughter

"Mom! You have always been so trim and fit—what is going on?” (my twinkies were showing and i was the only one who did not seem to notice!

I am glad my daughter administered a dose of Tough love to help me snap out of it and turn things around. I hated what I saw in the mirror but had no one to blame but myself and my out-of-control cravings! (I gave them an inch and they took a mile!)



My husband and I started with an ‘Elimination diet.” .... emoticon Disposing of everything seen in this picture and not bringing it home again! Instead we got back to the basics of eating healthy, in moderation, exercising, and watched the pounds began to disappear!



Farewell Twinkies and friends! We are forever done!

The Bonus is—In February I will celebrate nine years in Sparks! I was so happy when a friend invited me to join! Sparks has made the journey so much easier to get on track and stay there. Plus meeting so many people on the same trail—we are in great company!...the flame will never die, or the spark go out as long as spark people are here! And supporting friends like YOU!

    Oh the twinkies, McDonalds fries and DIET Coke. I think we have all been there. I have adopted a mainly WFPB diet. People ask, "What about calcium and protein" And I say, "no one ever questions the integrity of a McDonalds Value meal and a large diet coke! " And I could never pass up the large bucket of movie popcorn. Movies no longer d/t the pandemic. My arteries needed a break anyway. Great blog, Spark On emoticon

    Yes those twinkies were good as were the cupcakes and everything else Hostess offered. We used to have a Hostess store that sold cases of the stuff for a lower price. I don't think it's there anymore. Thank goodness. emoticon

    Sadly my twinkies (pasta, cheese & pizza) are showing. Unfortunately, I justify it, in my head, with "well, I look better than her". A thought at some unsuspecting, random person passing by. I restarted Spark on Friday and caught myself this weekend thinking that, then scolded myself, that it not a positive response for either of us.

    Sometimes it takes a pinch of reality to see what others see in us, I just posted on another's blog that we should think for ourselves but thinking and eating are two different things aren't they? We are very capable of ignoring things right in front, or in us! emoticon

    Congrats on your 9 Spark Years and breaking the junk food habit. I have to admit I still indulge in too much junk food and it IS showing. I am working on it, but unlike your DH, mine isn't ready to give up junk food for life.

    This blog really hit home — I still remember 3 years ago when I picked my daughter up from her after-school program and asked the Aide, Emily when she was due — and she wasn’t pregnant! I don’t know who was more embarrassed.

    I remember the years before children when we ate healthy, then kids came along and fast meals and snacks became the normal. Yes I remember the twinkee years. They can't be too bad as they are so light and fluffy. But we all know different now!

    That's nice your husband did the elimination diet with you. I have done this probably 3- 4 times in my 10 years on here. There was always something triggering my wanting to over indulge in bad foods off and on. No excuse, but it is hard to stay on track during emotional, upsetting times. Especially if you're a food addict- like me! Not just junk food, all food- I just like to eat. True confessions, right?
    Right now we're back to phasing out snack foods. Since hubby retired, I told him you'll need to really to cut back on your food amounts, since you won't be active on the job anymore. He was on his feet 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, doing warehouse / inventory work. Well, he didn't listen --gained 19 pounds in 7 months! I gained too, he was a bad influence on me. He said Covid19 lockdown, etc didn't help. True, but we both know better. Yeah, that snacking while watching TV is not good idea either. Bad habit of ours sometimes.
    I just know once this extra weight is gone, I'm not going to let any more of it come back ever again! A promise to myself! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    It's good that your husband was willing to go along with the food plan. It was a year ago just before Thanksgiving, I announced a zero sugar plan for 21 days. He found ways to fudge - sweetened dried cranberries on his cereal, cappuccinos and lattes plus a couple of other places. At the end of 21 days, he binged on sugary stuff.

    I hadn't had 'a lot' of sweets since then. This month, I have candy from our son. I am rationing it.

    on my journey I learned i can enjoy some "junk foods'' just not like i had in the past yes some are gone for ever too. i have learned to plan them in my meal plan. and i know some can give them up but i am not one of them . I have learned to plan measure limit instead of the large bag of chips. I will get a small bag enjoy then with a sandwich and i satisfied . Thank you for reminder what junk food can do to me if

    I truly wish my DD had made the comment yours did. I didn't gain until I was working 20 hrs. a day at 2 heavy duty jobs. It took a little boy asking his mom how come that lady's arms are so big. IT's the first time I looked at me in the mirror in the public bathroom.

    I used to be trim also, but my reasons were a little different than yours, BUT.....just as destructive.
    Emotional eating is just as bad as being a junk food junkie....

    I am thankful to have found Spark, and while it is a slow process for me, the older you get the harder
    it is if you have added health issues, that just makes it harder, not un-doable, just a little harder.

    We get support on here we get from no one/no place else.
