Hi.

I did get the septic tank dug up, and we got it pumped, and my dad did the relatively easy work of filling it back in.

So that's done for about three years!

I have good news, but it belongs in August, so see you guys there.

Jeff

I actually did decently while even with traveling. Body weight exercises make it a little easier to get things done.

Closing out July (now that we're halfway through August...

Today was my first day back at work, so the end of my summer goals.
emoticon Nerdy goal was an almost, so I'm going to count it a success. I didn't go every day, but I did have some double-days, and the days I didn't go were because the transit really crowded out doing other things, and I'm still waiting for my free pass (the library owns memberships that you can check out) to the Intrepid, so when that comes through I'll have done 16. emoticon
emoticon Food goal got modified early in July because the 500 calorie deficit was kicking my butt. And then while I was out of town, I was unable to go online, so I wasn't even tracking. I wrote it all down for a couple days thinking I'd find somewhere to get online and then I just resigned myself to not being able to fit it in. I'm sure I ate worse then, both because I wasn't tracking and because when I get really sleep deprived, I use carbs to keep myself awake. Anyway, I'm two pounds down from the start of July, so there must've been some overall deficit... emoticon
emoticon Exercise goal... uh... I did strength train a lot before I skipped town. But this was not a summer of running. While I was at Mom's I toyed with her handweights a couple times but they aren't heavy enough to get to failure. When I was camping I had the space to do some bodyweight exercises, but mostly didn't anyway. Back at it since I returned to New York, but still not getting out in the mornings to run. emoticon

How did you end up on weight training, LORENVER?
Did you get the septic tank work done, JEFFDENN?

See y'all on the August thread.

It is soo hot here! I've been getting in my physical activity. One day is was so hot I just paced in the basement, but that beats sitting around :). My eating was going well, but I stopped tracking and things started to spike. My weight has come back down from vacation, which is nice, but hasn't gotten much lower.

I am really looking forward to the cooler weather.

Also - We put up a book exchange. People are taking and leaving books. So exciting!

So just checking in.

I went away on a work trip for three days. Was up to 250 or so Thursday morning. Ugh.

Controlled bad habit for three days on work trip. I've got to learn to manage it.

I haven't gotten any exercise the past week. But today I'm getting exercise, 10 minutes at a time. The lid to our septic tank needs dug up! It's so hot that 10 or 15 minutes is all I can do at a time.

I'm effectively managing my caffeine intake. 4 medium cups a day. Well, two large mugs today.

Not keeping track of food, though, so I need to do a better job at that.

How is July treating everyone else?

Hi! Wow, long posts.

Just figured I'd check in.

I've noticed too I've been getting more lethargic, but it's been gradual over a long time. Boy does it feel good after the rare good workout though!

Still at 244.4. At least I'm maintaining. I'm having trouble sticking to a 2,000 calorie diet.

The hard part is dinner and evening snacks.

So I gave up on the bad habit. Just manage it, don't control it. It's more powerful than I am, so I have to find a way around it, or to live with it. (No, it's not drugs or alcohol, but I figure the same principles apply to behavioral addictions as to D&A.)

Speaking of addictions... get about 4 medium cups of coffee, and seem to be doing well. Also, I allow myself one DIET soda if I'm at work.

I think those are some excellent observations. I too have noticed that my energy gets sapped if I eat things that are too easy to digest. Everything just seems so hard afterwards. Maybe my body is just telling me it is disappointed ha! I have also found that my body seems to be really fast at digesting things. People say a good oatmeal breakfast will last them hours or until lunch. If I eat oatmeal (old fashion, steal cut, groats) I am hungry within an hour or two. That's a lot of calories for not a lot of staying power. Fiber doesn't seem to fill me up, so that might be related. Last time I lost weight I was eating about 7 meals. Maybe I need to start doing that again. It takes a lot of planning though.

My body also seems to know if I have a deficit in recent years. The bigger the deficit the worse I feel. Anything over about a hundred can leave me feeling migrainy and miserable. I am hoping increasing my workouts and weight training will help balance this out. I applaud your 500 calorie deficit, even if it is only every other day.

I think our bodies or telling us things, and we should probably listen to it, than to advice on the internet and books :). Now to figure out what it is actually saying....

Ugh. Heat = lethargy. I've been blaming a lot of my lack of energy since school got out on the oppressive heat and humidity, although it's never been above the low 90s and most past summers that would have been something I easily adapted to. This summer, I cannot drink enough water to keep myself peeing during the day. I drink 2, 3, 4 liters of water, sweat it all out, sit in front of the fan, and still don't want to move. And I didn't have that thing this spring when it first got hot when I just lost my appetite and shed a layer of blubber. I think the difference is that Eric's apartment is so much colder. I'm sleeping in long thermals and still waking up repeatedly when I'm there because I'm too cold. And all this is while the thermostats report that the temperatures aren't that extreme. Eric's a/c is set to 74 degrees and the great outdoors hasn't been above 94 for more than a few hours, so why isn't my body managing a 20 degree swing? Is my internal thermostat just getting old?

Speaking of heat, calories. I am really struggling with the 500 calorie a day deficit. Only managing it about every other day, and I am being all kinds of disciplined. To a degree that watching myself from the outside looks like too much. There was one day when FitBit said I only burned 1455 calories all day (Harris Benedict equation says my basal metabolic rate is 1436). I couldn't move. I was almost as catatonic as during the worst of the depression over my divorce, but I didn't feel unhappy, I just couldn't muster the energy to get up for anything but thirst. I know a pound a week is supposed to be a slow, sensible pace of weight loss (and I am impatient for it to go faster) but I'm starting to think _I_ just need to go slower. I'm recalling that when I first joined SparkPeople and lost 28 pounds, it took a year and a half to come off. That's a third of a pound a week. One other data point: I've made my 500 calorie deficit a couple times on low calorie days, but mostly I've missed it because I am not trying to put my body into starvation mode. The days when I've really had a good calorie deficit were days when I ate 1800 to 2000 calories and burned 2300 to 2800. Maybe I need to give up on the idea that you can't outrun your diet! I think I'm gonna revise the calorie goal to eating to just feel good whatever that means at breakfast and lunch, and I'll try to tune dinner to SOME calorie deficit, but if it's only 5 calories, so be it. Took me three years to gain the weight, so it's no horror if it takes three to kick it back off. I just don't want to wait that long.

Last random observation: I took a class today at MIT where I had to walk up five flights of steps to get to the classroom. Never been there before, so I got to town more than an hour before class, found the room, and then went in search of a nearby place to eat breakfast once I knew exactly where I was going. I didn't eat a big breakfast, or even a digestively challenging breakfast. It was a (white flour) popover with the house rhubarb vanilla jam and a full 12 ounces of fresh squeezed orange juice. (OMG delicious) But really simple carbs, right? Should be half digested by the time I swallow. When I went back to the classroom, I was winded by the top of the second flight of stairs, when I had just waltzed up all five flights effortlessly before. Could my body really be diverting so much energy to digesting my breakfast that I was having a hard time fueling my quads? It can't be that my cardiovascular fitness detrained in the intervening hour!

Okay, I've rambled more than enough for one day.

Glad you're finding a way past the migraines, LORENVER, and yay for away-from-home strength training.

Those are some good solid goals, thanks for posting!

I just got back from a family reunion. I didn't manage to workout everyday, but I got in some body weight training about every other day. I'm pretty proud of myself for that. Now that I am home again, I need to get into a pattern. It is so much HOTTER than when i left. Ugh.

These are my goals for Jun 29 to August 18, so July+ :

emoticon Nerdy goal is to visit 16 museums or parks - taking advantage of the cultural resources that justify the insanely expensive standard of living here. So far, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Africa Center.

emoticon Food goal's kinda boring, but necessary. I'm tracking every morsel of food that crosses my lips and trying to maintain a daily deficit of 500 calories. Just 3 for 6 so far, and I'm trying really hard! emoticon

emoticon Exercise goal is a strength session or a 5K training run every morning before it gets hot. "Before it gets hot" has sorta been "last month" so far, but I've done at least a little bit of strength training every day that I haven't run. Need to do better.

Happy July everyone!!!

Hope you all have a good holiday tomorrow.

I'm already working closely with a health coach and a psych rehab caseworker this month, so not gonna post any goals here. But wanted to check in -- down to 244.4 as of yesterday morning, and I'm trying to exercise more and lose weight.

Also, on my second day of breaking a bad habit. (Behavioral addiction.) The first 24 hours are the worst!!!
