Find the right fit...

Monday, March 02, 2009

When I joined this community at the end of last year, I was really caught up in the moment, I guess. When I was learning to navigate the site, I was told to join a group and was given a monumental number to choose from. Well, every team I looked at seemed to me, to be a perfect fit. Suffice it to say, I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing so I just clicked away and my page was full.

There, I had done my job. I thought, "how awesome was I to be a member of so many groups." I was sure i must be the best new Spark person that had ever joined. I'm sure my competitive nature had nothing to do with the huge number of teams I had joined.

Well, I didn't realize that I was going to have to do "stuff" in every group. I was overwhelmed to say the least. It seemed as if I was always a step behind in everything I was trying to do. I just didn't get it. I thought that this was just going to be to much work for me. You know I have to have fun if I'm going to do something!!!

Maybe I'm just not the super human being I think I am. I couldn't handle 75 groups. Maybe some people can. However, once I went through and pared down to the 5 I enjoyed the most, it began to be fun. This was manageable. I could support and be supportive.

The best thing I have done on Sparks is join a group called Shape Up for Summer Challenge. This group is awesome. It's not a gigantic size group so you really do get to know people. But the best thing about it is that I am held accountable for all things...good, bad or ugly. It's accountability with love and support. I can't say enough about this group.

So, the whole reason for this rambling blog is to say, especially if you are new, pick 1, 2, 3 or what ever the number of teams that is good for you, and give them your all. It's so rewarding when you can complete all the challenges, etc., have fun and lose weight along the way. And don't forget the awesome friends you can make.

I know as time goes on, and my needs change, I will move in and out of many groups. But for right now, I'm happy with the teams I'm on.

Also, as a post script, if you don't have a buddy, I encourage you to get one. My SP Class broke our buddy list down by the amount of weight you wanted to lose. I was so lucky to become friends with several great people from my buddy group. I couldn't do it without them. They have taught me a lot.

You are sooooo right (about limiting the number of teams you're on and about the Shape Up group which is a great team). Personally, I got overwhelmed with more than one team and wondered how people that were part of so many did it. Even now, after being here over a year, I truly commit to only one team for challenges and daily upkeep and put the other teams on the back burner and hold onto them for resources. Some of the back-burner teams revisit me as the main team if the main group I'm in ends. But- that's how I do it.

    Thoughtful post, as usual.

I love being on the Shape up for Summer team. There are so many daily challenges to choice from and so much support ( and isn't that why we are all here, support). I know I am. Keep up your great work.

Great blog! I did the same thing and I can't keep up with more than 2. You are doing a great job! And I've told you before, I couldn't do this without you. :)

Thanks for the post. I had the same experience--trying to find the right teams to join and really "be a part of" is a bit of work. I'm still experimenting. Good for you that you have found the right ones.

Now about this business sprouting comment on my blog--you talking business plan? :)

What a GREAT blog! You're absolutely right, too, as I've said in a blog of my own. It is so easy to try to do too much in the beginning and get bogged down with the process of everything. I have also found a great fit in a very few groups and I'm so happy and SUCCESSFUL!

    Keep up the great work!
