But it was supposed to be HAM!

Friday, November 23, 2012

First, let me thank all my wonderful SparkFriends who sent me goodies and/or commented on my sparkpage or activity feed wishing me a happy Thanksgiving and leaving me encouragement. I am so blessed by every one of you.

My DD Merry and I decided that neither of us wanted to go to the trouble of a turkey or stuffing. We decided ham would be much easier. So...she bought an 18+ lb. spiral-cut ham. We were going to have Stouffer's mac & cheese, Idahoan potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, etc. When Tayler (my granddaughter spent the night with me Wed.) got to DD's house, she had made 2 pies and was planning on 4 more. Several people had requested a whole one for themselves. (Not me, have no fear SparkFriends) She had not yet looked at the ham to see how long it would have to be in the oven and the mac & cheese and green beans both needed to be in the oven.
I looked at the ham and it would take at least 4.5 hours to heat through. We would have to eat it cold (It said that was okay) and forget the glaze. So she put together two more pies and put them in the oven.
DS (Tayler's daddy) showed up with Kirby, DGS, about 12:00 and said he could stay awhile. He brought chocolate covered pretzels, fortunately a small bag, so I was unable to make a pig of myself, having to share with DD, DS, and 6 grandchildren. He also brought very hot cheetos, I ate one and was sorry.
DIL was working at the church. They were serving dinners to the community. They fed about 400. This is a small church, but they do a lot of outreach. They offered dinners to all the people in the community who had to work that day, as well as people who called in for deliveries and people who came to the church for dinner. At about 1:00 she told DS she would be with us about 2:00, she was eating dinner there at the church. He told her if there was food left over to bring some with her.
About 15 minutes later a couple showed up at the door with dinner for all of us. DDIL sent them. There were turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, and rolls. So we all pitched in and ate delicious turkey dinners and then put everything we had planned to have, away for Christmas. Except for the pies, of course. emoticon
For the first time ever, our Christmas dinner is planned and purchased before Christmas Eve. It's a good feeling.
So I had a blessed and happy Thanksgiving Day, family, feasting, and fun. I hope you had a wonderful day, too. God is so good. The only downside to all this was I expected to bring a ham sandwich home for later. Just between you and me, I guess that's just as well.
In about 3 minutes it will officially be the Christmas season. So Merry Christmas, too. May God bless you every day!

I wish we had been there with you all. It sounds like you had a great time. We enjoyed out day and our Safeway dinner. We are now looking forward to Marlie's party on Saturday. It is official, Greyson and Camilla will be there. We are glad that Marlie's best bud will be celebrating with her.

    Love ya!

I enjoyed my peek into your holiday, Janet!

We were with our youngest & her husband - at their home two states over. We had a lovely time. SIL #2 did a deep fried turkey - surprisingly tender meat & no grease. I am still trying to get my mind around that way of cooking a turkey.

I did super great about food choices made & am feeling proud of myself, don't you know?

    God bless!

Janet, sounds like everyone was happy to help with your Christmas dinner lol--must be a great feeling to have that all made up already. I think it is so nice how people are taken care of for the holidays by churches, companies and food centers. It's too bad that their shelves stay pretty much empty during the rest of the year. My heart goes out to families with children that have nothing. After all the hoopla about what organizations do with donated money, I don't know who to trust anymore. So for the last couple of years, I've tried being a "secret Santa" to someone I know needed it. At least I know or I hope I know where the money went.
You didn't mention a word about Sue--how is she doing and was she with you guys yesterday? Tell her we miss her. ((hugs)) to you and your family! Noel

Janet, I loved hearing about your Thanksgiving. . .and Turkey was the perfect choice, and they do make great sandwiches. I love both turkey and ham but overate big time turkey and all the fixings yesterday. I'm moving forward today. I'm so glad you stayed within your calorie range, at least I assume you did. What wonderful family and friends you have. Sounds like a Terrific Thanksgiving for you and your family.

Sounds like you Daughter in Law was watching over you all. I love small community churches and how they seem to find a way to reach out sometimes better than the larger ones. I also have a few issues with them, but that is nother story for another day. I am glad you enjoyed your day with family and gave your daughter a break so that she didn't have to cook much more than the pies. You didn't mention what kind of pies did she make.

    Nice blog ....
