Toby's Update

Thursday, May 02, 2013

A lot has happened since I last blogged about Toby. He did have surgery again April 24 and the vet removed what he could of the mass on Toby's leg and side. Because the surgery was late in the day, we did not pick him up until Thursday morning. He was still a kinda groggy and not very stable on his paws so Ashley and I had to "help" him out of the car and onto the back porch. Toby stayed there all day and just laid there, enjoying the beautiful weather. About 6:30 p.m. we toted him into the house (he only weighed 93.8 lbs) and that was not easy. About 9 that night I called the vet again and we ended up meeting him at the clinic as he was not able to stand still. He was hooked up to IV and given some shots, hoping it would help him and we left him after midnight. I called about 9 a.m. 4/26 and was told that Toby had died. Toby turned 11 April 4. Ashley and I took it hard, so not a good weekend mentally for us but I had commitments that I had to keep.

We had decided when we found out that Toby had cancer that we would have him cremated and we did do this. Now remember he died last Friday and Wednesday, they called and Toby was ready to be picked up in a beautiful box with his name, dates on it. I was so surprised at how fast this was done and so respectfully handled. Donna (our daughter) had called him for me as I could not talk, and he went and got Toby from the vet and handled everything for us. This was our first time not "burying" a beloved pet and I was so thankful for his understanding.

Things are getting a little better and it seems that Ashley is doing better since Toby is "home" now. We are going to take him to the farm and spread his ashes later.

Oh Linda Kay,I just left a message on your page concerning a comment that you left me. I am so sorry about Toby. I know the loss is heart wrenching. It's been a year now since we lost our beloved Illahee. We, too had her cremated and was presented with a beautiful box with her name and dates on it as well. She has a stately place of honor on our fireplace mantle in our family room for the time being until we can bring ourselves to bury her with our other beloved fur babies. The thing that helped us the most was knowing she was no longer in pain nor suffering. My heart truly goes out to you and Ashley. Time will eventually ease the sadness my friend. Toby is at peace now but will forever remain in your hearts and memories. emoticon

So sorry for your loss. i went to your photo's to see a pic and he was a great looking dog. When our cat Simon passed away at 17 years old vet sent him to be cremated. He is buried out in my feel good corner of back yard.

My last cat died of cancer, at home. I buried her in our backyard and planted a beautiful jasmine vine over her. I was so glad my husband was out of town because I cried for three days. It was very hard, but now when the jasmine blooms, sending its fragrance all over the back patio, I think about our beautiful cat.

I am so thankful that Ashley is doing better. Every bit of your story mirrored my loss each time of our three babies. It is so hard to speak through tears. I am so glad that Toby is home. I understand that too! Could not rest til mine were home either. God Bless you both and heal your empty hearts! emoticon

Losing a pet that has been part of your family for so long is so sad. Maybe in time you can get a new Toby but for now, rejoice in your memories.

Sad times Linda Kay - so sorry to hear this. Wish I could help but I know that only time will help - but hToby will always be in your thoughts and hearts and therefore 'with' you.

Pleased that the ending was made as bearable as it could be - I hope it helped such respectful arrangements made for you.

Thinking of you and sending big emoticon

Really sorry to hear of your loss. I'm glad
that everything was handled so beautifully
    for you.
The farm sounds like a good place to spread
Toby's ashes. It will be hard for you for a
while but it is good to know that Toby is no
longer suffering. Hugs to you and your husband.

so sorry for your loss but how lovely to be cared for so well by the vet, and to be able to take the ashes to the farm, it will take a long time to mourn but in mourning there is remembering of happy times spent together and that will help you through the tough days. emoticon
