Salt-Free Seasonings - Part 1

Friday, November 06, 2015

Sometimes it's convenient to use a salt-free seasoning. Making your own isn't always practical, especially if it's for a recipe you only make once in a while. Plus some of the spice blends are just fun to use. This blog came about because I bought some Frontier Garlic & Herb Salt Free Seasoning from a bulk bin at my local coop. I love it so much that I set out on a quest to learn more about salt free blends. After I did some research I realized some blends contain small amounts of sugar, a definite drawback for people whose bodies cannot handle it; I didn't investigate the gluten-free angle because that's not my thing. Finally, I decided to make a list so I could find the information I wanted in one place. Here's Part 1.

Benson's Gourmet Seasonings:
These are only available online. Chef AJ uses the Table Tasty Blend. You can order collections of 2 ounce bottles and decide which blends you like best. There are a couple of meat oriented blends, but I included them because the ingredients would add a nice flavor to tempeh, tofu, seitan, or beans.
Bravado Tex-Mex Chili Salt Free Seasoning
Calypso Jamaican/Caribbean Hot & Spicy Salt Free Seasoning
Gusto Garlic & Herb Pepper Salt Free Seasoning
Heritage Game Bird & Poultry Salt Free Seasoning - use like poultry seasoning
Masterpiece Mediterranean Style Salt Free Seasoning
Ponderosa Wild Game & Beef Salt Free Seasoning
Supreme Garlic & Herb Salt Free Seasoning
Table Tasty No Potassium Chloride Salt Substitute - Chef AJ likes this blend.

Bragg Live Food Products
You probably know the Bragg name from the company's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar - the one that has the "mother." Bragg Premium Nutritional Yeast Seasoning is my favorite brand to use at the table. Bragg has 2 wonderful salt free dry seasoning blends:
Bragg Organic Sea Kelp Delight Seasoning with Organic Bragg Sprinkle 24 Herbs & Spices
Bragg Organic Sprinkle 24 Herbs & Spice Seasoning (Paul C Bragg's original 1930 blend)

Cavender's Salt-Free All-Purpose Greek Seasoning:
This blend is salt-free, but it contains beef bouillon granules - a definite "no" for plant-based diets. It's easy enough to make your own vegetarian/vegan version from this recipe by using vegetable bouillon granules like Massel Salt-Reduced Beef Style Bouillon and leaving out the salt webcache.googleuserconte

Chef Paul Prudhomme:
This beloved Cajun chef recently died, but his legacy lives on in his spice blends. Fortunately some are salt free, and one of the most recent lines is free of salt and sugar.
Chef Paul Prudhomme Salt-Free Magic Seasoning (This is a very popular blend. If you cannot have any sugar, note that brown sugar is an ingredient.)
Chef Paul Prudhomme No Salt, No Sugar Magic Seasoning Blends:
Lemon & Cracked Pepper
Seven Herb
Six Spice
Sweet & Spicy
Toasted Onion & Garlic

Frontier Coop:
In addition to the seasonings listed below that are identified as salt-free on the label, Frontier has other blends that are salt-free. Be sure the label says "salt free" because many of the blends have another version that contains salt. None of the ingredients are listed on the website, so you'll have to check labels at the store if you cannot have sugar.

It's hard to find salt-free seasonings from the best known Cajun and Creole spice vendors, but here's one you can buy from the Cajun Grocer online store:
Benoit's Best Spicy Salt-Free Seasoning - This a salt-free Cajun seasoning made in Lafayette, LA, the heart of Cajun country.

McCormick :
There are surprisingly few salt-free blends from this company. The most popular products are:
Lawrey's Salt-Free 17

Old Bay 30% Less Sodium - This is not salt-free, obviously; and it is hardly low sodium. It has 95 mg of sodium in 1/4 teaspoon or 380 mg in 1 tsp. I've seen several recipes that list Old Bay as an ingredient, so it's included here just to bring attention to its high sodium content. www.oldbay.com/Products/
