Salt-Free Seasonings - Part 2

Sunday, November 08, 2015

Avoiding salt is especially important if you're prone to high blood pressure like I am. The only way to control sodium intake effectively is to cook everything you eat from scratch. That's not easy to do unless you never go out to eat, open a can, or eat frozen food; but you can still maintain a heart healthy diet by limiting those activities and not adding salt to your food when you're cooking. Salt-free seasonings make preparing your own dishes easier because you know you're not adding any sodium. Is it OK to add a little bit of salt? Dr McDougall says it is, but only a little and only at the table www.drmcdougall.com/heal
Other doctors say "no, never ever use salt". It's your food and your health, so use spices to ramp up flavor and try to leave the salt shaker in the cupboard.

Simply Organic All-Purpose Seasoning
Simply Organic Spice Right Everyday Blends All-Purpose Seasoning

This is a family-owned business started as a catalog by Bill Penzey, son of the founder of Spice House. If you visit one of the more than 30 Penzeys stores located throughout the nation, you will find an enormous selection of spices and blends and experience sensory treats of smells and sights. The stores and website have an extensive collection of sugar and salt free blends. This list from a forum on Cooking Light contains all of the sugar-free blends as of 2/2012. Salt-free blends are denoted by (SF) after the blend name. Unfortunately it isn't alphabetical. You can find a list of ingredients for each blend on the website. community.cookinglight.c

For information about any of the spices and blends, store locations, and online ordering, visit the website www.penzeys.com/ All of the spices are packaged fresh.

Spice House:
Another family-owned business, the original Spice House in Milwaukee was founded in 1957 by William Penzey. His daughter Patty inherited the business and added a second location soon after. The company now has stores in Milwaukee, WI and Evanston, Chicago, and Geneva, IL. This spice purveyor has a long list salt-free blends. I didn't check for sugar. All of the spices are packaged fresh.

*** An aside, if you're interested in learning more about Penzeys and Spice House, read this article from Chicago Business. www.chicagobusiness.com/

Spice Hunter
This company makes 35 salt-free blends. The ingredients were not listed on the web site, so I am not sure all are vegan, e.g. Greek Seasoning. If you have specific dietary needs, be sure to read the ingredient list on the label.

Spices Inc:
This is another family-owned business that originally operated out of a bedroom in the founders' home. It was started as and remains a web-based business. All spice blends are hand crafted, and that small bedroom operation has grown immensely. The have such an extensive offering of salt-free spices and blends that "Salt Free" is on the menu bar at the top of the webpage. Click on this link for the collection

Spice Islands:
I couldn't find any salt-free blends on the website; nor could I find ingredients for the few blends they have. You'll have to read labels if you're buying one of this company's blends.

Tone's Italian Seasoning
Tone's Garlic and Herb Seasoning

Tony Chachere's Famous Creole Cuisine:
Tony Chachere's Gumbo File - This isn't really a blend, but it's a mainstay in Louisiana cooking made from powdered sassafras leaves.
Tony Chachere's Salt-Free Seasoning - It's also sugar-free.
Note: I checked Zatarain's (a McCormick brand) and it does not make a salt-free Creole or Cajun seasoning. I tried to find information about Luzianne but came up empty handed; only tea and coffee are on the website. NONE of the mixes, including batters, for any of the Creole and Cajun purveyors are salt-free with the exception of Zatarain's Wonderful Fish Fri. Louisiana Fish Fry has one salt-free product; see separate entry for details.

This is the end of my list of commercially available sources of spice blends. There are probably other companies that make spice blends, but I these were the ones I'm aware of.

Part 3 of this series will feature homemade spice blends that I have either enjoyed or plan to try soon. Stay tuned.

Thank you for spicing up my life! emoticon but seriously- yes thanks- I too am prone to hypertension so this is a reminder and is helpful. Lately the bag of himilayan black salt that I bought to put "egginess" in my tofu scramble is calling me...I sometimes feel like I am going to the salt lick- that has to stop!

I have never cooked with salt. When I was about 12, I started cooking for the family because my mom worked. My dad had high blood pressure and couldn't have salt. Even after I lived on my own and then married, I have never cooked with salt. There is a salt shaker on the table for guests but the only time I have used it is with homemade chicken noodle soup. This was great preparation for now when my DH has been diagnosed with high blood pressure a few years back. Now, I have it too. We have never missed salt at all.
