I need to Vent--Frustrated!

Sunday, January 10, 2016

Dec. 31 Ashley saw Dr. Sri (hematologist) and Ashley's blood work was not good. His white cells had increased--good, but his platelets had over doubled--very bad. Dr. prescribed a new med that was not suppose to be expensive. He ordered it at our local Wal-Mart and we went later that afternoon to pick it up. They did not have it but would order it and it should be here Monday--Jan.4. Well, we went to pick it up after lunch and it had not come it but they did get brand name med in for $779 for 1 month. Ashley said no--he wanted the generic that Dr. had ordered. It would not be in until the end of Jan--maybe. We went home and I called the Dr. office the next morning. They told me they would call our insurance and see what could be worked out.--oh, the generic would cost $555. Again Ashley said no--we are on set income (SS and his retirement). Wednesday they called and said insurance had come down to about $150 for 3 mos. of the med and did paperwork to get help on this med too (free/reduced). Wednesday night I got a call from Caremark that we had been approved for the med to change drug tier. That sounded good to me. I kept looking for email to approve the order on Thursday but it did not come. I called them and was told the 3-mo,. supply would cost $115 (GREAT!!) and when I told them to send it, I was told I would have to get it locally. Guess what--it is NOT available locally. I finally got Wal-Greens to order it (other pharmacies could not get it) and was told it would be here Friday. Again, it did not come in on Friday. Here I call the Dr.'s office again. After I told Haley what was going on and how I was being given the run around, she told me she would call Caremark again and see what could be done. This Wednesday Ashley is to have blood work done again. I know that his platelets are just multiplying like crazy. He has a blood cancer -- suppose to be the good kind because it "can be controlled" with meds easy. It may be controllable with meds but not if we CAN'T get them or he CAN'T tolerate them. I am trying so hard to be positive but it is hard. Ashley keeps saying why can't the dr. order something else and it is really hard to explain to him there is not that many meds available for what is wrong with him. He can get down so easy and it is really hard to raise his spirits when that happens. It is also hard to explain something when I don't really understand just all there is to know about it and sure can't spell most of the words needed--can't change them into words I know too. I am not a good medical translator.

I have vented, now will go on.

I am a nurse and it frustrates me so much when I hear stories like this. This is totally ridiculous. I hope your doctor's office can help you.

So glad you came here to vent... It is so very healthy to have a safe place to release pent up FRUSTRATION !!! As to pharmacies... I try my best to avoid the "chain" stores.. They do not have a vested interest in retaining my (prescription med) business like the privately owned pharmacies... at least that has been my experience. Meanwhile, I will keep the two of you in my prayers.
Oh, I did finish my "Rag Quilt". It isn't perfect... but it is cute or is that pretty? and it is functional.
Have a great 2016 !! and then, lot's more years after this one.

What a mess! Hope you get a result soon Ikkle Turtle. Thank heavens we live in the UK where treatment is free at point of contact and we pay so little for meds.
It's not perfect but man I'm glad we have it.
    Take care emoticon

Between the insurance company, medicare and the pharmacies---- we really get ripped off. No one should have to jump through hoops, keep calling the doctors and hoping the pharmacy orders what the doctor prescribed, not the brand names.
even the generic drugs for certain medications are o expensive. None of us think that as we age we will be treated poorly regarding our medical health and medications. I sure hope your husbands medication can get straightened out promptly..

How difficult that is! It's so hard to take on all the additional stress when you're already totally stressed about the problem in the first place.

Hoping for a positive outcome -- SOON!!!

My thoughts are with you both during this struggle. There may be help for you. Contact the American Cancer Society. They sometimes can find grants or other help. Good luck!
