Let's just get this straight, the title was meant to be dramatic. I am not leaving and I am not saying good-bye (to you). I am saying good-bye to the two hundred and more Sparkfriends that I removed from my sparkfriends list last night. I have been at Sparkpeople for many years and had close to 500 friends. But as life imitates art, or in this case Sparkpeople imitates life, people come and go. Yesterday I removed all those people who had not updated their status in over 1000 days.
It was sad to say good-bye to quite a few of those people, many had kept me company over the first years here at Spark. We had shared stories, updated each other on our progress and connected through status updates, emails, Spark teams and challenges. In many ways we had become friends. A few still connect with me through Challenges on Fitbit. On the other hand there were also many people who had been a brief encounter with a chance hello. There was no connection, little more than a message on a Sparkpage and in a different way that is sad too.
I have to wonder what happened to my former Sparkfriends. I know a few of them were successful, achieved their goals and moved on. Many of them probably left as they found the commitment to weight loss through Sparkpeople to be challenging or just not their thing. Others may have given up and gone back to lifestyles that just aren't that healthy. And then there is the greatest fear I have for a few, are they watching us from up above? They were the few that been battling illness and I have wondered what happened. There have been others that were so committed and then they disappeared. Where did they go?
I will likely never have an answer to where they went but should they return I hope that they will give me a "hey, how ya doing?" and then like old friends I am sure we will reconnect.
As for you, the Sparkperson reading this, I invite you to friend me, or maybe you already have, either way thanks for being part of this journey and keep in touch. Don't be afraid to be like BDTHOM, who was my first ever Sparkfriend, and leaves a message on my Sparkpage that reminds me when I have been neglecting my health and been gone too long, or Ceri, who has been here as long as I, who always reminds me that there is another 5% Challenge happening. The list goes on and there are many more amazing people here. I hope for some of you I can be motivating, or helpful or just someone who listens, maybe even a friend. I hope you all find great friends here on Sparkpeople that make this journey to better health and fitness more attainable but definitely more enjoyable.
