A Summer Blog, part thirty-six

I always like to think of nature in the abstract—as a pleasant kingdom of plants and animals where the sun always shines and all is right with the world. This morning I was faced with the reality of nature as a smallish prey bird swooped down and scooped up a small brown bird right in front of me. I was witness to a killing and nature reminded me that she is in charge and terrifying at times. And it happened so quickly. Most of the summer birds are gone and the winter birds have not yet arrived. It seems very quiet on the deck with just the river, the dogs and me. But the sky is blue, the cliffs are red and the sunshine is on my back and all is right with the world. I know how quickly all that can change, but I am enjoying this moment in my life.
