Could it be happening for us?

What if this time is for us?

I'm a teacher. This time has been hard, left feeling abandoned and unprotected and both trying to protect all of these young people in my care. Taking it upon myself to disinfect when the district wasn't. Just yesterday we got the last minute news that we were closing for the next 4 weeks. I felt relief and a sobering realization of the reason why this "break" is happening. I'm doing my part by self-quarantining and practicing social distancing.

Some of my Mom friends are going stir crazy after day one, but I'm trying to view it differently. What if this is not happening to us but happening for us? What if there could be an opportunity in this time spent alone with family?

I've been thinking. I want to see how healthy and strong I can become in the next month. What a gift of time. It's not entirely stress-free. I know the seriousness of the matter at hand for our world. But i also know I have no control over that. So maybe I could use this time wisely. Maybe.

I have a treadmill in our garage and I can go on walks outside. I can do at-home videos. I actually have more time to cook healthy meals at home. I'm trying to see the good parts of this unprecedented event.

I'm listening to a podcast by Jack Kornfield right now. He said once they were walking with a monk and the monk pointed to a huge boulder in a field and asked, "Is that boulder heavy to us?"

And all of the monks-in-training replied, "Of course,"

And he said, "Ah, no, not if we don't try to lift it ourselves."

I cannot lift the heavy burdens. I cannot control what will happen. But I can take advantage of time with my family with no distractions. I can take advantage of this time with my body, to nurture it, to care for it, to strengthen it, to love and accept it.
