Follow up from yesterday

Many of you have commented on finding a new doctor as well as bringing this whole incident up with my primary care physician. He wasn't supposed to be the one doing the procedure but due to cancellations from Covid, they were trying to play catch up with the appointments. I am going to request to have my files sent to the original doctor.

Then the issue with my primary care physician is that I did have a female doctor but she left her practice on March 31st and the files have been passed on to a new doctor. I had my first on the phone appointment today (we are still not able to get in person appointments due to COVID and that didn't go the best either. The reports are not back yet and he (the new GP) just rehashed what I already knew. John and I both found it very hard to understand him and I had to say "pardon me, I'm not understanding " at least 6 times. He probably has me earmarked as "a very slow learner"

There is a 2-3 year wait list for weight loss surgery so I agreed to have a referral made but I was very clear that I intend to work on my weight and overall health myself. He mumbled something about my BMI being so high.

When I was talking afterwards to John's cousin, he was assuring me that I am on the right path of gradually losing weight. He told me I was doing everything right and in time my health markers will reflect that. He also recommended I keep tabs of my blood sugar .

Anyway, I did a huge thing yesterday - I used to nutrition tracker on Spark. I never really have been consistent with it as I seem to always be under my daily calorie allotment. However, I figure if I use this tool I have something to show as "evidence of my efforts".

Your positive thoughts are very much appreciated and I am very appreciative for them. I'm feeling somewhat better mentally than I was and am prepared to fight the fight!

    Good for you, Susan, to try to solve the problem without surgery! You can do it! The nutrition tracker can be really helpful.

    Good for you... losing 12 lbs is a significant achievement. Keep doing what you've doing. If you plateau then shake things up a bit. I would definitely find a doctor(s) you can work with! emoticon emoticon

    You are so on the right tract. I use the food tracker, weekly. Up date, daily, right now. It showed me why I keep on 20 extra pounds. Here is to your continued health! emoticon

    Susan I know you can do this. Tracking has helped me. Take one day at a time, drinking your water, and making sure you have your veggies and fruit. and walk for just 10 min. a day. Remember that this is not a diet

    I loathe tracking, but it's the only thing that works for me. I'm not consistent and my lack of progress definitely shows it. I think if you are unable to lose the weight in 2 years, and you feel like you've truly given it your all in that time, maybe (maybe) then it's time to consider the surgery. In the meantime, I hope that you can find a doctor that you click with .

    I just read your blog from yesterday and today. My heart hurt for how that doctor treated you. I would definitely try to avoid him in the future. That kind of attitude will not help most people make positive changes. You have already exhibited the fact that you are capable of losing with the 12 pounds. You said that weight loss surgeries were backed up 2-3 years. You may not even need it when your turn comes if you keep working on it on your own. I think the tracker will help.

    Susan - you've GOT this!!! You are going to be a weight loss queen - ON YOUR OWN TERMS. And you've done so well this past round. And what idiots these doctors are! I mean, I don't mean you're in the care of idiots, but I do feel that they really don't get the power of what a woman like you can (and WILL) do!!!

    You just keep doing what is working--daily water, exercise, freggies--definitely weigh your food to verify portions. I also use the Spark Tracker and, like others have said--it takes some time in the beginning but if you really want accuracy--enter the info from the labels yourself and add them to your "favorites" to build your data base. Once you get the most of the things you eat in there regularly-it only takes a few minutes a day.

    The reason I gained weight after I reached my goal the first time was because I stopped measuring/weighing my food and tracking. I won't make that mistake again.

    The key, is consistency--you are building great basic healthy habits (hydration, exercise, rest, nutrition)--and once those are ingrained you can build on them. Before long--you are living a healthy lifestyle and are able to sustain those healthy habits. You've got this. I believe in YOU.

    The Spark tracker is clunky but if you're eating the same basics every day, it gets easier. The biggest issue is accuracy. If you're not already, I suggest getting a food scale and measure everything. You think you're under allotment but that can be deceiving. It's surprising the difference between what our mind/eye thinks is a serving and what the food scale says.

    Another simple trick is a pedometer if you're not already using one. Not the cheap kind that tend to be grossly inaccurate. I have a $15 pedometer that just tracks the steps and that's fine with me. The scale tells me the next day when the steps don't keep up.

    If you're taking meds that trigger weight gain, ask to talk to a nutritionist so you guys can figure the compromise.

    If you don't want to be railroaded by the medical community, you're going to have to be firm with yourself and be the one in control.

    You can do this; you've done it before. They're speaking from stats. Show them you're not just a statistic.

    Much better! Glad to hear. The wait list might be long but the do hook you up with a nutrictionist to lose weight before surgery, even if you don't want the surgery.

    My neighbour had weight loss surgery. It is certainly not an easy answer to losing weight. Even though I have a lot fo weight to lose, I will choose to keep on following a healthy food plan and getting as much exercise as I am able.

    I hope you do get that new doctor. I agree about the tracker in that it takes a while to get going, but once you get your “Favorites” in there it’s much easier. Also, if you repeat meals you can copy them and post to a different day and/or meal. It takes time at first, but now I can usually do my tracker in a few minutes. Over time, I have also posted my favorite recipes, and then the tracker allows you to easily search for the recipe and post a serving to your tracker.

    I’ve tried a few weight loss plans over the years. They all work if you follow them, but the trick is finding one you enjoy enough to continue. Weight Watchers is a good place to start because it offers so much variety and personal choice. Whatever you are doing now is working. I think the tracker will help a lot. It keeps you aware of what you are doing.

    So happy to hear what John's cousin said. I am not a medical professional but I agree! Weight-loss surgery seems like it should be a last resort. The food tracker is kind of a pain when you're first starting, but once you've saved the things you regularly eat it can be pretty quick and easy to do each day. It is the only way I have ever managed to lose weight, and since I've slacked from it in the past couple of years, I have regained a good 10-15 pounds. So I am a believer!

    Good for you! I have been using the Spark tracker almost since I started with Spark. It helps me see if I'm getting enough protein or eating too much fat. It takes a bit of time but once you have your normal food items logged in things go so much quicker. Good luck to you! I believe you can do this without surgery!

    I know you can do it.

    My husband has been dealing with different doctors lately and he has trouble understanding some of them. It is good that you can discuss things with John's cousin.
