Just joined today, and have been reading a few of the other "this is me" posts. Does anyone know if we can search for those bios in subsequent days and weeks? I know we don't all post every day.

I'm Yvonne... and though I know a lot about gardening (am former president of local herb club), my husband and I travel a lot and our yard gets neglected. Despite that, we have the prettiest lawn in the neighborhood because I'm the only organic gardener, and our soil is probably also the best in the neighborhood. With the heat and drought Texas has had this summer, most lawns are suffering.

I've tried to grow tomatoes for about 5 years unsuccessfully. I know there are local people who grow them, but I'm really inexperienced in vegetable gardening. I'm trying to take over the lawn inch by inch (under my husband's radar) and convert to native plants. This summer has really proved the wisdom of that. I do have an azalea in a pot... I'm sentimental about them, after living in the Washington D.C. area and seeing their beauty every spring... but mostly I'm converting to things that like this area.

I'm addicted to ellipticals, as demonstrated in the previous paragraph, and am trying to wean myself away from them...
emoticon

Yvonne

Didn't notice the elliptical in the last paragraph till I'd posted this message, demonstrating that bad habit. emoticon

Hi everyone,

My name is Candace, I live in inland Southern California (zone 9). I'm married, have 3 children (2 grown, 1 pre-teen) and 1 grandson. I work full-time as an accountant so it's difficult to garden as much as I'd like.

Currently, I mainly grow roses (perfect climate for them) with a few other plants: lemon tree, dahlias, hibiscus & Crepe Myrtle trees. I'm in the planning stages of a vegetable & herb garden as Fall is the best time to plant most things in my area. I will be making my own compost as well... my soil is clay and very hard to work with, so it needs amendment, which is expensive to buy! I also plan to plant some avocado and orange trees.

Nice to be here! I hope to learn and share and above all, lose weight! Thanks for listening.

I thought I'd introduced myself to this group already but with so many teams who can remember? I'm Sandy P, living in No. Florida on a little island called Fleming Island. I think I live in Zone 8B or 9. We have lots of summer rain and humidity and dry winters that are quite temperate. The soil is mostly sand, so between the rain and the drainage I am always fertilizing something. I love to grow perennial flowers and brightly colored foliage plants. I also grow herbs every year but the weather necessitates growing them in clay pots so they don't rot out. My entire front porch is covered in potted plants, mostly herbs, as my house faces South. Good thing everyone is trained to enter and exit through the garage door!! They'd need a machete to get thru the jungle on the front porch. We live on a fairly small lot by Florida standards, it's about 200 x 180 and of course flat as a pancake! Is this a forum where folks can talk or ask questions about grass or is it just veg and flowers? I have some tricky turf questions if there is a master out there? Nice to be around other gardeners!!!

Glad to finally meet you. I find that gardening is a very good therapy for the soul as you can talk to the plants and they don't talk back. I do mainly roses but have some other things mixed in with them. I too am learning to branch out a little.

Good luck on your vegetable and flower beds.

I joined this team a few days ago and hadn't had time to introduce myself.

My name is Tina and I live in west central Illinois, along the Mississippi River. I live with my wonderful DH and my 17 year old son. Our daughter is out on her own, living in St. Louis and going to college.

I have a few garden beds in my backyard, and a plot at the local community garden. I mostly grow vegetables, but am learning to grow flowers too. My mom is the flower gardener of the family, but it is time I learned something from her.

Gardening is one of my main hobbies, but I love to do so many things! Life is full of wonderful activities and fun things to do. I like to knit and cook and read and play games, I could go on all day, but I won't.

I hope to get to know some people here as we share weight loss and gardening.

Hello! I'm Mary Snodgrass, a Chicagoland transplant in the MO Ozarks and lovin' it. Married 11 years this Sat, second time around. Four grown children. two grandchildren, and a stepgrandaughter from first marriage. Five grown stepchildren, 6 grandkids and two great grandkids. His family are in NE while mine are in IL. I'm a retired Cub Food cashier.

I love coffee in the morning, popcorn anytime but especially at high school football games, the Fall and the internet. I work at keeping the weeds out of my flowers and garden. There were no bushes or flowers and only two trees here when we moved onto the place. We've come a long way. Nothing fancy, just a work in progress.

Hi!

My name is Wendy, I am 55, single, and just bought a place in a senior park that has been neglected for some time. I have a huge amount of work to do and figure it will take me 3 or 4 years to get this place up to snuff. I am a mother, grandma, aunt, sister, master gardener, crafter, horsewoman, reader, beader, and an employee at our local variety/hardware store( I run the garden dept...go figure!) in Silverton, Oregon, voted in 2010 as one of the top ten coolest towns to visit in the U.S. Also have the notoriety of having the first ever transgender mayor....not neccesarily a claim to fame that I care for, but it is not my place to judge.

Back to family...I have one beautiful daughter who will be 30 in July, a wonderful SIL, and two precious grandbabies...one girl, one boy. Not exactly babies either....Taylor, my granddaughter is 9 and Tyler, her little brother will be 7 in July....they are currently participating in baseball so I catch their games whenever I'm not working. They live in the next town and that is just perfect.

I am looking forward to being able to visit with fellow gardeners from different places, and to be able to ask questions about things I don't know. emoticon

Welcome to the team ladies! For poor rocky soil rack the rocks out as you go and add the dirt like you did you can add pot ash, bloodmeal, bonemeal, black & white newspaper tore into strips and soaked in water. The newspaper turns in to a fluffy nutrient that helps aerate the soil. If you have compost to add it helps with the soil nutrients. Lucinda

Hello, my name is Mary, obviously. I'm a transplant from a small town, way so of Chicago, living in the Missouri Ozarks and lovin' it! Here 8 yrs in June. The first gardening lesson I learned was that the official gardening tool here is a pick axe!!! LOTS of rocks but plants grow in the soil, especially butterflybushes and columbine.

We did bring in better soil, but not the rich black dirt from IL, for our garden area. Love gardening, just not in the hot humid weather which we are getting already this year.

I'll give that a try. Last year I put a shallow plate next to the new flower bed I made and put vinegar in it. It "trapped" about 20 of them overnight (they drown) but those that didn't still leveled my new marigold plants....nothing left except the stems!

Thank you Lucinda! I use marigolds as well but they don't seem to rid the flower beds of those nasty grubs and slugs....both of which can level a flower bed overnight!

Hi everyone, I'm Rose. I live on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. I was looking for an active Team to join that had to do with gardening. We are putting our very first garden in this Spring and am very anxious to get going on it! I was looking for a Team that I could learn some gardening tips from. We hope to be organic but we have some "bug" issues that need to be addressed....hoping to get some hints from you all! I'm a grandma of 12, mom of 3 and I just retired 4 years ago....still finding my way to being able to "relax"...hasn't happened yet but I'm getting there!

Hi..my name is Donna and I live on a cattle ranch in Southern Saskatchewan, Canada.
My husband and I have been married almost 35 years(June 11)
We have 3 kids and 2 grandkids
My birthday is May 18
My favorite food is ice cream..which I have given up for Lent :)
Besides the cattle and horses we have one dog, one house cat and 20+barn cats
My hobbies are numerous but some are gardening, reading, crafts, horseback riding, quadding, swimming.....
I have cut down on the size of my garden since the kids have left home but my new garden is still quite huge..I grow lots of basic veggies and flowers, start a few plants and buy quite a few bedding plants, do some herbs too..

I thought this looks like a fun spring team to join and get some pointers and tips and recipes for the garden and meet some new friends..stop by my page anytime to say hi..we're in the start of calving...and I'm itching to get in the garden (I have a few peppers started, so far) we can't plant anything out until aroung May 20 but I may rig up a mini hotbed with a window in the garden and plant some early lettuce, spinach and raddish :)

Hi I'm Lucinda, single, have 1 daughter 2 grandchildren--5 & 12, live in central Illinois, no certain food as favorite just food of the mood, love to read, container garden, surf the net, SP, watch DVDs that's about it. I've gardened most of my life some big some small and always had herbs and flowers too. I almost forgot I have a yorkie named Toruk Macto from the movie AVATAR, he is my constant companion. I live in an apartment complex and they have had container gardening for 3yrs and I helped last year when I was able. This year I have signed up for 2 of the wading pool containers to plant, water and tend. Hopefully it will produce enough to eat plus can and pickle some of the produce. I will also help with the community herb garden's well as cuks and tomatoes so I will have enough to give my family and can. Well that's all for right now any questions just ask. My birthday is July 20th.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Amy and I'm fairly new to SP. I had used the on-line Weight Watchers site a few years ago and had good success, but then caring for ill parents and then being the executor for their estate after they passed away derailed me and I gained it all back (and then some). I didn't want to make the financial commitment this time around, so I decided to give SP a try.

I love being outside in nature and love to take long walks when the weather cooperates. Because I live in Michigan, where the winters get cold and dark, I found I could only walk on weekends during the winter, if that. So I joined a gym in January to force myself to walk on the treadmill and keep me from just going home and hibernating after work. I've also been working out with weights and I hope that it will be much easier to lug around those bags of mulch when I can get out in the garden again in another month or two. Spring is arriving in Michigan and with daylight savings I will be able to get outside and walk more after work and soon I'll be working in the garden too. But I'll still keep going to the gym just to make sure I get in some really good workouts each week.

Amy

Welcome to the team Tara and congrats on the pumpkins. That is something I have not tried as they take up so much room and I have limited space.

Welcome Kathy and square foot gardening is something I would like to learn more about. I am almost done taking a master gardener certification course and will meet plenty of people who can help me I am sure. I wish you luck with your foot surgery next week.

Hello, i'm Tara. I'm single with no children. I have 1 dog, 3 rats, 3 mice, 2 snakes and 1 chinchilla. I live with my mother who has 5 dogs and 22 cats. (They are all fixed and taken care of.) My favorite snack is pie or ice cream. So far I have resisted. I've been on SP for less than a week, but I think i'm already doing better than I would on my own. I just harvested my pumpkins not to long ago. I've been trying to grow pumpkins for the last four years. This year I must have done something right. emoticon

Good Morning! A couple of years ago we moved near Toronto, Ontario, Canada from Northwestern Ontario. I had a beautiful garden there and many neighbours that liked to swap plants and give hints on gardening. I am now learning how to garden in an area that is warmer and the growing period is longer. We used to have our last frost about June and first frost at the beginning of September!! I am married; two children; six grandchildren; no pets; birthday is March 3. Have some tomatoes in containers; rhubarb (just made jam with a couple of granddaughters); zucchini plants (told they were cucumbers when I bought them at a Seniors Day Care!) and some banana peppers. Never grown peppers before - are they hot???? When do I know when they are ready to pick?

Hello, I am new to this team and this is my second go round with SP. Started again in Jan. 2011. I had some health issues that kept me from staying involved from when I first joined in 2009.

Anyway, here are some things about me.

1. FIRST NAME? Laurie
2. CITY IN WHICH YOU LIVE? Branson, MO
3. WHEN IS YOUR BIRTHDAY? October 12th
4. SIGNIFICANT OTHER? Yes - husband
5. CHILDREN? GRANDCHILDREN? One son
6. PETS? 1 yellow lab and 2 black labs
7. FAVORITE SNACK FOOD? Haven't had them for a while - chips - salt & vinegar or jalapeno topping the charts
8. FAVORITE EXERCISE? Yoga, although I have not done it in a while
9. HOBBY? Gardening and reading
10.ANYTHING ELSE? My husband and I have an electrical contracting business and we stay so busy with it that we have very little time for anything else. I am getting back into the things that I love to do in order to have a better look on life in general. I love gardening and have not been able to do it for several years and my yard looks like it. I hope to get to know you all better.

Hi, I am new to this Spark Team.

HERE ARE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME.

1. FIRST NAME? Cathy

emoticon emoticon For Lynda! And if she can do it in the great blistering HOT state of Texas, I guess I really have no excuses. emoticon We rarely get blistering hot, just melting hot.

I guess if Rae can do this, so can I. I have been with SparkPeople 7 weeks.

My name is Lynda.
I live in (blistering hot) Fort Worth. Tx.
I have a daughter 38 who has two incredibly brillant, beautiful children.
I have a son who has left to those of us still traveling this earthly home an incredibly brillant, beautiful daughter.
Those three young angels are my delight.

I am blessed to have my mother still here, very healthy. I have two dear sisters.

I am just coming out of a dark dreadful stage of my life filled with grief. During this time, I lost my health, my smile and my necessary gratitude for all the good blessings I enjoy here on Earth.

I have lost 13 pounds and begun to exercise in a swimming pool a good friend has been gracious enough to share with me whenever I want to go.

I love:
God
children
babies
animals
languages
reading
swimming
gardening
my church
flowers
fresh garden vegetables
TRAVEL
friends
well, I love lots of things

am trying some container gardening this year and the heat is just about to kill it all. Oh well, there is always fall.

HERE ARE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME.

1. FIRST NAME? Rae
2. CITY IN WHICH YOU LIVE? St. Joseph, MO
3. WHEN IS YOUR BIRTHDAY? July 28
4. SIGNIFICANT OTHER? Nope
5. CHILDREN? GRANDCHILDREN? 1 daughter 28 with granddaughter 4 1/2 1 son 26 with grandson 7 months tomorrow
6. PETS? No, but I wish I could
7. FAVORITE SNACK FOOD? Anything I can pick up and munch on, depends on my mood.
8. FAVORITE EXERCISE? Walking
9. HOBBY? Crochet, knitting, cross stitch, reading...yep, all are done sitting down.
10.ANYTHING ELSE? There is a small (approx 10x10) plot that an apartment neighbor started about 3-4 years ago. He passed away last fall, and three of us have taken it up. My section is 3 1/2 7ish foot rows. My lettuce is about done, I've got a couple of do's of green beans so far, the carrots are going well, there are three peppers, tomatoes are getting there, two corn made it, ( one of the other guys has corn as well so there should be enough for pollinatin"), onions, and one single solitary cabbage. I've had gardens before, that did ok, but I want to do better. This year we got kind of a late start, and didn't really get the soil prepared right. We'll do better next year. I'm hoping to learn more for all of you. I just wish I had more room for my goodies. ;)

Today was the date I had set to be at 22 pounds gone. I managed just 21, but it is 21 less than I had back on Feb 7! Why today??

Today is our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Be happy for us.

Yes, I have reset my goals. Can I get rid of another 21 poinds by Oct 17th ? Let's see if I can do it. I w/b around for a long time at 201 pound increments over 4 months, I s/b be an active member for at least another year. emoticon
