Hi everyone,
My name is Leslie, I'm 42 and live in Canada. I'm new to this site so still learning.
I also joined the 'sweet tooth' team as I find that is a big part of my current struggle. Need to find a way to watch what I'm eating. I've never struggled with my weight, but this is changing with peri - menopause. My weight is creeping up and my family (husband, 13 y.o. daughter) also love the sweets.
I have a rare genetic condition called Ehlers - Danlos syndrome, type 7b. My mobility is starting to be seriously effected. I have had my right hip replaced and am on the wait list for my left hip. My lower spine is fused, and now my Sacroilliac joints are effected.
I still work full-time time (out of financial necessity ) but this may change soon. I use a scooter and forearm crutches for distances. I'm working with a physiotherapist to improve my physical condition but fatigue and motivation is really hard.
Looking forward to getting to know you all & sharing info and positive energy 😊

HI everyone. I have returned to the site. Looking forward to getting to know you. Bobbi, just keep it up, do things in small ways to increase your walking ability as time goes on, you will get there. I have ambulatory problems, and balance issues. Being on foot, with winter coming on , well...........just looked out the window and snow is just pouring down ........ wonder if we are in for a mini blizzard or if this is a freak moment this morning. It was not supposed to snow.
I have a manual treadmill. I need to , um, dust it off. ;)
I have lost 25 lbs since June. I need to lose a tad more than 15 lbs and I will be down to a very healthy weight for me. I also need to redevelop discipline when it comes to daily exercise activities. It will pay off if I do. Part of why I am here.
I was looking at the nutrition tracker, must be nice to have meals like that consistently! I change it up though and people have really helped that by posting more foods and dishes with information, to help one track things. I am a type 2 diabetic and luckily , so far can manage it by diet and generally taking good care of myself. So I am trying to do that. I am a lot of other labels too, but most of it is under control. Dropping starches and gluten has helped reduce pain levels and is helping me lose weight. I have more energy now and move much more easily. For each of us the amounts may be different but we are all in this together. I hope you all have a sweet day!

HI BOBBI,............. WELCOME BACK TO THE TEAM AND SPARK.............. IT'S GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK AND WANTING TO GET ON A GOOD EATING PLAN TO LOSE SOME WEIGHT.......... THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO AND NOT WHAT YOU CANNOT DO....... TAKE IT SLOW AND START OUT WITH A FEW STEPS THEN BUILD FROM THERE.......

WE ALL HAVE HEALTH ISSUES ON THIS TEAM BUT WE HAVE TO FIND WHAT WORKS FOR EACH OF US........ DON'T START WITH WANTING TO GET TO BE IN THE 200'S...... START WITH A FEW POUNDS EACH WEEK....... MAKE SMALLER GOALS THAT ARE DOABLE....... OR START WITH GETTING RID OF THE WALKER......

BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR JOURNEY BOBBI........... STAY STRONG AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD.....

Hello everyone and thank you so much for the warm welcome! Sorry it took me a couple days to get back...I thought I had read all the messages, but somehow I missed these! I'll figure it out one of these days....

Oh, and I think I may have found an opportunity to make a little bit of extra money! I would be keeping a 92 y/o lady with dementia company (and occupied!) for an hour or two, 3 to 5 days a week at the gym where her granddaughter/full time caregiver works out, that just so happens to be the gym I belong to, so it's only 5 minutes away. Found her on craigslist....yay! It's not a lot of money, but certainly better than nothing, and can work around my work schedule (when I have one!). emoticon

So thanks again for the kind words and encouragement! Hope you all have a great weekend!

Angie emoticon

Angie, you have too much going on in your life. Hope everything gets back to "normal" for you.
I am far older than you, 67, but understand a lot of what you are going through.
There was a flood in my condo, 4 floors of us had to move out. Now that I'm back there are still a ton of boxes to go through. My 2nd bedroom is still filled with boxes. I do the best I can but my back conks out when I lift the heavier ones. Months later and I'm still behind the eight ball.
Every time I break a bone,( hip, both feet at the same time or a bad sprain), I gain another 60 lbs.
Lost my job 1 week before flood. I feel lucky there. If I had not been home, I would have lost both kitties and a lot more property. I was the only one home and I called the fire dept. And even though I was making decent money at my job, the man I worked for for 14 yrs was not at all decent. Somehow I hope you can see your way past the horror that has happened and can make a different but good life. SparkPeople can help. It has certainly helped me. emoticon

Hi everyone, I'm Angie. I just joined the group, so thought I'd introduce myself...

Oh where to begin?! lol I am 45, wife, mom (12 y/o daughter, 21 y/o son, 3 step boys 22-32, 3 dogs, 2 cats), from Vancouver, WA. I was in accounting all my life, but had to quit working full time in 2006 due to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and then a back surgery (fusion). I eventually went back to work part time, but that also proved to be too much. I was approved for disability in 2009. Prior to all that, I had always been thin, except for twice...when I was pregnant with my son in 1993, and when they overdosed me with steroids during a back procedure in 1996. I lost that weight, both times. However, it changed after my back surgery. The weight just kind of crept up....and up....and up! Then I gained a lot all of a sudden, for no apparent reason. And then I was diagnosed with hormone positive stage 3b breast cancer with lymph node involvement on Valentine's Day 2013. I went through chemo, surgery, radiation, and then another surgery, but they say I'm cancer free now!

So now some of the extra fatigue is lifting. My back is still the bane of my existence though! And the fibro causes severe pain in my muscles. The chemo caused nerve damage so my hands and feet are in various stages of numbness. Oh yeah, I also have bursitis in both hips and now shoulders. Joy emoticon

Most of my days are spent trying to catch up on the things I haven't done in the last two years. We also emptied our storage units, brought everything back to the house to sort through, so there are boxes everywhere. I also have the "normal" day to day stuff...cooking, cleaning, pets, pre-teen daughter with emotional problems, and my husband is also disabled as he developed psoriatic arthritis in 2009 and also has auto-immune disorders, so he's not able to do much either. And now we just lost half our income because his LTD says he "no longer meets the criteria"....long story, but the point is, we can no longer afford to hire people to do the physical work for us (housecleaning, yard work, home maintenance, etc.) It's overwhelming actually. But, now I'm going to have to work, at least part time. So I have to lose some weight so that I can make it through the days AND fit into and look half way decent in office wear.

SO - here I am emoticon

Have a great day! I'm looking forward to reading all about everyone.
Take care,
Angie emoticon

The great thing about Sparks is that you can get encouragement for any and all problems. I belong to a group of over 60 with 100-200 lbs to lose, disability and cat lovers. It is amazing. I must read up on how this all started.

Hello! My name is Ann!

I have gained so much weight due to my overeating plus steroids that I'm on. Now, I threw my back out. Before I hurt my back, I could only do about 2 minutes of walking (my favorite exercise) which really bummed me out. But, I remembered that there are folks on SP that have disabilities and still work out - so that's why I'm here!

I look forward to getting to know everyone!

I just completed a sitting cardio SP video! It was great!

Feralauntie: It is difficult to keep weight under control. After being in the hospital for 6 weeks I weighed the same, but all my muscle went to fat and as I rebuilt my bones and muscles it just stayed on top. I also started work again as soon as possible and that is when most of the weight came on. It has been hard to go back to full time work. Most people after my level of accident take a year or so from what I've read and I went back at 7 months. It has been challenging, but good for me.

SHERRE: What an inspiring story! no one told me that I wouldn't walk again. They did say that had I not had good health my leg would have needed amputating. I am sure grateful for the strength training I had done before! They also said I would not bend my leg past 45 degrees and can get it to 90 now!
Part of the reason I'm joining this team is I am about to move and my good friend who works out with me here won't be available. I will need to face all new people and join athletic groups like I used to, knowing that I will not be the best and they won't know where I'm coming from. My old martial arts instructor was very encouraging of me trying to return, but I am a little afraid of the situation I will be facing at a new school. Anyway, it would be great to have some support from people in similar situations. I've found people are generally encouraging when they see me trying my best despite limitations, but it can be hard to be noticed more for your limitations than other aspects of who you are.

HI KATE......... WELCOME TO THE TEAM........... THANKS FOR INTRODUCING YOURSELF AND TELLING US A BIT ABOUT YOU........ I STARTED IN A WHEELCHAIR........ I WAS TOLD I WOULD NEVER WALK AGAIN.... BUT I KNEW I HAD TO FOCUS AND GET BACK ON MY FEET.......

.... SLOWLY I STARTED DOING LITTLE THINGS AROUND THE HOUSE....... WENT THROUGH THERAPY TO GET STRONGER AND FINALLY GOT TO A WALKER...... FROM THERE A CANE....... AND I CAN RELATE TO PEOPLE LOOKING AT YOU......... BUT I HAD TO IGNORE THAT KIND OF STUFF OR I WOULDN'T HAVE EVER WENT OUT....... WHEN ASKED I WAS TOTALLY HONEST AND ACTUALLY GOT TO KNOW A FEW PEOPLE JUST FROM SHARING.

THE THIRD YEAR I STARTED A GARDEN....... AND AT THE BEGINNING I COULDN'T MAKE IT TO OUR BACK GATE....... BUT BY THE END OF THE SUMMER I WAS UP AND DOWN WATERING... HAULING HOSES AND WEEDING.... TAKING BIG BREAKS AND LOTS OF THEM.

TODAY I DON'T USE ANY AID.......... IT CAN BE DONE............ MAKING SMALL GOALS FOR YOURSELF.......... ONES THAT ARE DOABLE AND WON'T SET YOU BACK...... LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND ONLY GO UNTIL IT TELLS YOU ENOUGH...

IT'S GREAT YOU HAD FRIENDS TO HELP YOU........... SUPPORT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE ALL NEED......... BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY........ WE HAVE A MONTHLY CHAT AND CHALLENGE WITH LOTS OF SUPPORT AND HELPS TO KEEP YOU MOTIVATED........ DROP IN ANY TIME.

Omnigoddess, welcome. I do understand about gaining weight when injured. When I broke both feet at same time I gained 60 lbs. When I broke my hip another 60 lbs. It gets to be one big circus. You gain and cannot do anything to lose it until it is entrenched on you. Good luck. You are in sparks that is a good beginning.

Hi team! I am new to this team and new to being disabled. About a year ago I was hit by a truck head on and am closing in on walking normally again. Before my accident I was very active. I danced, did martial arts, enjoyed yoga and fun activities and workouts. Right now I am struggling to lose 20 lbs of fat that I acquired while bed ridden and rebuild damaged muscles. I'm trying to be brave and go back to work out groups even though people look at me because I have a cane and can't do things too well sometimes. Often people ask me awkward questions about the accident, but I think with scars that will just always happen. Especially as I am fairly young.

I did have good friends who helped me go to the gym even when I was in a wheelchair and my recovery is going better than anyone expected. Still struggling with my weight and "new normal" though.

Anyone in a similar boat? Any tips on moving people to more pleasant topics and getting to know new people when they sometimes focus in on what stands out?

HOW TRUE IS THAT WE'RE NOT SPRING CHICKENS ANYMORE.......... I KNOW IF I OVER DO IT ONE DAY IT CAN SET ME BACK FOR A COUPLE DAYS...... IT TAKES TIME TO KNOW WHAT OUR BODIES CAN HANDLE LINDA.... IF WE CAN DO JUST 10 MINS WE'RE A HEAD OF THE GAME OR ANYONE SITTING ON THE COUCH........ ONCE I GOT HEALTHY I FEEL SO MUCH YOUNGER THAN MY YEARS....... HANG IN THERE...... IT GETS BETTER AND EASIER IN TIME.

Thank everyone for the howdy. Sherrie I think you are correct about keeping the exercise down to 10 min. When I tried to expand it, I was out of whack the next day every time. Got to remember I'm not 20 anymore and nothing comes easy or quick. emoticon

HI LINDA............ WELCOME TO THE TEAM.............. WELL YOU WILL FIT RIGHT IN TO THIS TEAM........... MOST OF US HAVE FOUND THE BEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT IS JUST TO TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME............ START WITH SMALL GOALS...... AND BUILD FROM THERE......... ONE THING YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER IS WHATEVER EATING PLAN YOU DECIDED TO GO WITH HAS TO BE ONE THAT YOU CAN LIVE WITH THE REST OF YOUR LIFE......... DON'T STOP EATING CERTAIN FOODS....... MODERATION IS THE KEY TO LOSING WEIGHT........... AND DOING ANY KIND OF EXERCISE ONLY HAS TO BE FOR 10 MINS AT A TIME.

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY.......... DROP IN TO OUR CHAT OR JOIN THE CHALLENGE..... GET TO KNOW SOME OF THE MEMBERS.......... THE SUPPORT IS HERE FOR YOU...........

Hi, my name is Linda. I'm 67 have 2 cats and a bunch of broken bones in the past. Broken hip, both feet and too many toes to count. I tend to hobble a little. My weight does not help either. I have been trying to change habits since joining SparkPeople in July. I'm making headway there but the weight has yet to come down. Am more determined than I have ever been, but am having a problem. Hoping that my almost daily trips into sparks will help. Maybe this group will add to my resolve.

Linda

Hello! I am not new to SparkPeople, but thought joining groups would help me keep it off. Really interested in exercise options for people with cervical disc replacement, facet disease, Ankloysing Spondilitis, sciatica (slipped discs and facet disease), Fibromyalgia, neuropathy, seizures, and migraines. The fatigue and pain really get me down, but I am trying to battle through. I do my stretches from PT, modified yoga, and walking. Any ideas to keep me from getting bored?

Hello, my name is Alice. I am disabled. I have had insulin dependent diabetes since I was 9 yrs old.. From that I have neuropathy in my legs & feet, as well as my hands & arms. I have balance problems and fall frequently. I have retinopathy and gastroparecis. I am in a wheel chair and try to use a walker as frequently as I am able. I have had a foot ulcer for 4 years that just does not seem to want to heal. I started out weighing 556 lbs but had a gastric sleeve done and now I am 451 lbs. Hopefully this winter I will have a RNY done and I can lose more weight. I have pulmonary hypertension and COPD. I have been on SparkPeople since June of this year. But I have just found your team. I hope by following the other team members I may get some new ideas to work with. I belong to other teams and have found SparkPeople has a wealth of friendly and supportive people. I look forward to knowing as many of you as I am able. I have been doing chair exercises (I belong to a chair exercise group) which I started at 5 minutes and have been moving steadily up to 20 minutes. I guess I have really bent your ears enough. Thank you for listening!

Slow but steady wins the race!

Hi everyone :)
My name is Cassi and I'm new to SparkPeople!! Seems like a great group of people though!
I unfortunately developed a serious condition with my Feet called Charcot Foot. It effects mainly Type 1 diabetics (which I am ) and cause the bones to crack almost all the time when you step down. I have to wear braces on my leg snows but I am not going to let me not reach my goals!!!
I'm super excited to be here with all of you because I could sure use to confidence boosters to help along my journey!! emoticon

HELLO NANCE........... WELCOME TO THE TEAM.............. THANK YOU FOR TELLING US A BIT ABOUT YOU..... THAT IS WONDERFUL WHAT TREATMENT HAS DONE FOR YOU........... EVERYONE ON THIS TEAM HAS SOME KIND OF DISABILITY.... SO SOME OF THE THINGS WE DO TAKE A LITTLE LONGER THAN A HEALTHY PERSON...... BUT WE GET THERE SOONER OF LATER....

I FIND IF YOU JOIN THE MESSAGE BOARDS AND KEEP IN CONTACT WITH OTHERS IT REALLY HELPS TO STAY MOTIVATED...... I THINK IF YOU ASKED ANYONE THEY WOULD ALSO SAY THEY HAVE INTERFERENCES ON THEIR JOURNEY'S.... DISABLED OR HEALTHY... WE HAVE A MONTHLY CHAT AND CHALLENGE WILL LOTS OF SUPPORT AND UNDERSTANDING.... DROP IN ANY TIME.

START OUT SLOW.......... GIVE YOURSELF SMALL GOALS....... WHEN YOU GET TO ONE OF THEM AND FEEL COMFORTABLE..... MOVE ON TO ANOTHER GOAL..... TAKING THINGS SLOWER JUST SEEMS TO BE MORE MANAGEABLE.... AND EASIER TO BE CONSISTENT......

BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY.......... IF YOU NEED HELP OR HAVE ANY QUESTIONS........ JUST POST AND THERE IS ALWAYS A MEMBER WILLING TO GIVE YOU A HELPING HAND.......

Hi there Nance, very pleased that you have chosen to join our team. Getting and staying motivated is something many of us can relate to, myself included. Sometimes I am more motivated than others.

You are in the right place for friendship and there is a challenge thread if there is something you would especially like to work on and get support. You will help us to stay motivated as well just by being here.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi, I'm Nance. In 2005 I acquired a neurological condition called CIDP. The CIDP caused me to be completely paralyzed and visually impaired. I'm happy to say that with weekly treatments, the doctors have been able to somewhat manage my condition and I am no longer completely paralyzed. Unfortunately, even though treatment has improved my mobility, the CIDP continues to cause vision problems, as well as unexpected surgeries & hospitalizations. Also, the paralysis/weakness still returns when I try to exercise and/or if my core body temp rises.

I have been on and off spark a couple of times since 2011. In the past, my medical conditions have really interfered with my ability to lose weight because I find it hard stay motivated and disciplined when my world is turned upside down. I joined this group with the hope that I might learn about the strategies other people use to stay motivated to continue to lose weight, even when there lives are in upheaval. I look forward to hearing any suggestions people have to offer.

HI THERE AINBUXTON. I UNDERSTAND. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THAT WHEN I WAS IN MY EARLY FORTIES. RELAPSES ARE A COMMON PART OF THE PROCESS FOR MANY OF US. I SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TRYING OUT SO MANY OF THE THINGS THAT PROMISED THEY WOULD CURE.

I AM SO PLEASED YOU HAVE JOINED US. THIS A FRIENDLY AND CHATTY TEAM AND YOU WILL BE RIGHT AT HOME.

Hi! I'm new to Sparkpeople. I live in the UK and for more than 8 years now I've had ME. I had a bad relapse that put me back in bed 18 months ago, and I'm still mostly housebound, improving slowly. I think it's time to tackle my weight now I'm moving around a bit and have some control back over what I eat. My husband's a good cook, but his cooking isn't always that great for weight loss!
I'm slowly getting used to this site and it's already a help. I know everyone on this forum has their own health/disability challenges in losing weight and I think that'll help me with mine, so hello everyone!

TORRANCE, YOU SURE DO SOUND LIKE A LOT OF FUN. A GIRL AFTER MY OWN HEART. I USED TO HAVE A WHEELCHAIR WHICH WAS BRIGHT RED AND I CALLED HER BEETLEJUICE. USED TO TEAR UP THE AISLES OF THE SUPERMARKET AND THE KIDS LOVED IT. :O)

SO HAPPY YOU HAVE JOINED US, LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE THREADS - LIKE SHERRE SAYS YOU ARE GONNA FIT RIGHT ON IN. HUGS

GLENN.............. I GOT TO SAY THAT WHEN I WAS TOLD I'D NEVER WALK AGAIN....... IT'S SOMETHING I COULD NOT ACCEPT....... I ENDED UP GOING SLOW BUT FROM WHEELCHAIR TO WALKER TO CANE TO NOTHING....... PLUS I'VE LOST ALL MY WEIGHT......

... I TRIED DOING THIS IN THE PAST AND COULD NEVER STICK TO IT...... I FOUND THAT'S SPARKS LIVING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE AND MAKING LIFE CHANGES WORKED FOR ME.

SO NEVER LISTEN TO WHAT THE DOCTOR TELLS YOU........... THERE HAS BEEN MANY MIRACLES......... IF YOU REALLY WANT IT AND WORK FOR IT.......... I SAY WE CAN GET THERE......... I WISH YOU LUCK WITH GAINING MUSCLE..... ALSO I FOUND ONCE I LOST SOME WEIGHT IT WAS A LOT EASIER TO DO MANY MORE THINGS.
