Hi,
I am Mary Ann, and I am 52. I wanted to join this group due to how my life has changed the last 1.5 years. I was always very healthy, active, and energetic, but I was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm and very leaky heart valve a year and half ago. I had an aneurysm graft and mechanical heart valve surgery at Cleveland Clinic, and the biopsy of the aneruysm revealed aortitis, a rare type of vasculitis. During 2014, I was hospitalized twice due to aortitis attacks involving my lungs and pleural cavity. During September, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a mascetomy , chemo, and finished radiation in June. I am adapting to my "new normal." I mainly suffer from frequent fatigue and weakness, and long term prednisone and Coumadin side effects. My goal is to get healthier and stronger though my sparkpeople journey. I JUST REALIZED THAT THIS GROUP PREFERRED ALL CAPS.

I AM GLAD TO FIND THIS FRIENDLY TEAM! IT LOOKS NICE! emoticon

I AM 65 YEARS OLD AND FAIRLY ACTIVE. I HAVE BEEN WITH SPARKPEOPLE FOR CLOSE TO THREE YEARS AND JUST LOVE IT HERE. IT HAS BECOME MY SECOND HOME. I JOINED BECAUSE I WAS 180 LBS AND NEEDED HELP TO LOOSE IT. LITTLE DID I KNOW HOW SPARKPEOPLE WOULD TRANSFORM MY LIFE TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. I HAVEN'T LOST A TON OF WEIGHT, ONLY 14 LBS, BUT THE 14 LBS IS A LOT FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME AND I'M HAPPY WITH IT. I HAVE A HAVE RHEUMATOID AUTO IMMUNE DISEASE THAT HAS ATTACKED MY BACK AND SOME OF MY OTHER JOINTS AND THYROID. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE A GREAT RHEUMATOLOGIST AND PAIN SPECIALIST WHO HAVE HELPED ME QUITE A BIT. BECAUSE OF THE RA MY BACK DEVELOPED OSTEOARTHRITIS IN THE LUMBAR AREA. 12 YEARS AGO I COULD NOT WALK (ONLY TO THE KITCHEN) AND ONLY DRIVE THREE MILES DUE TO MOVING VERTEBRAE AND 4 BULGING LUMBAR DISKS. I WENT ON A MISSION TO HELP MYSELF AND SUCCEEDED! I NOW DO NOT HAVE ANY LUMBAR BULGING DISKS. THEY RECEDED INTO THE VERTEBRAE WHERE THEY BELONG TO. yOU MIGHT ASK HOW THIS HAPPENED OR ISN'T THIS IMPOSSIBLE.? WELL SO DID I THINK THIS UNTIL MY TAI CHI MASTER TOLD ME IT WAS POSSIBLE. I DIDN'T BELIEVE HIM, BUT CONTINUED CHI GONG AND TAI CHI AND THEN ADDED SWIMMING TO MY REGIME, i STARTED TAI CHI FOUR YEARS AGO UPON THE RECOMMENDATION FROM MY PHYSICAL THERAPIST AFTER I TERMINATED THERAPY. I ASKED HIM WHAT IS NEXT AFTER PT IS DONE AND HE SAID "TAI CHI, OF COURSE! ". LOL. FOUR MONTHS AGO i HAD A REPEAT MRI DONE OF MY LUMBAR AREA BY MY NEUROLOGIST. IT WAS TIME AFTER FIVE YEARS OF NO MRI. THAT'S WHEN MY DOC SHOOK HER HEAD AND RUBBED HER EYES AND SAID, "I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE!" emoticon .A FEW MONTHS AGO I FOUND OUT THERE IS AN OLYMPICS FOR SENIORS. YES TRULY! I MADE A COMMITMENT AND HIRED A SWIM TRAINER TO HELP ME A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. i WANT TO COMPETE ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL. iT WILL TAKE LOTS OF WORK AND A COUPLE OF YEARS OF TRAINING, BUT I BELIEVE I CAN DO IT. I ALSO HAVE TYPE 1 DIABETES AND IT HAS BROUGHT ON SEVERAL OTHER FACTORS TO THE TABLE. ITS A DAY TO DAY STRUGGLE WITH ME

Hello to all - I am hoping to find help in exercising.that I am able to do. I have had trouble for many years of being clumsy. I noticed in the early 90's that my right foot slapped the ground with every step. I also noticed a my left leg seemed to getting weaker. I noticed it during y karate classes. They told me I was depressed and needed counseling. Went to counseling for 15 yrs. During that time, they decided that I had fibromyalgia. Things went rom bad to worse when I was bitten by some sort of spider. The walking got worse until I had to stop my daily trek altogether. Finally in 2005 I found a Dr that did the right tests. I have MS.

I had to retire because of fatigue and still have problems with that. I use a wheel chair for distances but walk around the house with a walker. I quit using an electric scooter for 2 reasons. 1) People are cruel when you are over weight and use a scooter. The comments are terrible. 2) I figure I need to keep my arms up.

I am hoping to get inspiration and exercise choices here. My biggest hurdle is writing down what I eat. When I do that, I am more successful. Need to loose 80 lbs but would be extremely happy with 50. Right now my goal is 5 lbs at a time. I get discouraged easy and hate to let anyone know. I do not want to be a downer. This will be the worst post. I do need help. Thank you for listening.

I'm 24 and I joined SP in January but I've just started using the community feature. I live at home with my parents and my 2 dogs. I went to a 4 year college and graduated with a degree in English Literature and Writing.

I'm wheelchair bound with type one diabetes. I'm wheelchair bound because I have Friedrich's Ataxia which is a neurological disease that I was diagnosed with when I was seven. Basically my muscles have strength but no coordination and I have very limited control.

I've been using the seated chair workout videos on this site. I've been swimming at Massachusetts Hospital School when I can but so fat only Saturdays and when someone can bring me.

Evening all!

I'm Anni, I have EDS3 which is a collagen disorder and leads to wobbly joints and weak, easily damaged muscles amongst other things. I can walk very short distances unaided (well, okay, so I can lurch about the house without my sticks.... usually....)

I use SmartCrutches for walks under 5 minutes long and use a wheelchair for anything more than that. I recently treated myself to a FreeWheel add on for my chair and I'm waiting for some super nobbly tyres to go with it so that I can go "off road" properly. I tested out the FreeWheel at the weekend on a variety of rough surfaces including farmyard/woodland/cinder tracks and it was awesome!

I play wheelchair basketball at club level. I injure fairly easily so I have no plans of going to Rio next year ;-) but I have played in a national women's league tournament and trained with present, past and future paralympians during the tournament.

Take 2...wrote perfect entry and lost the whole thing trying to put emoticon.
Hi all. New to group today. I am 48, turn 49 in July. In Feb 2007 I started a weight loss journey. In 2008 I found Spark. I lost over 100lbs and kept it off for over 2 years even through my Mom's passing in 2009, and emergency surgery in 2011. July 2011 I was diagnosed with MS, Multiple Sclerosis. I weighed 165lbs, size 10-14. I was happy and healthy. I could ride my bike 20miles or more a day, easily do 4 to 11 miles at track, could live on the elliptical even doing 1 - 2 hours after a high intensity, hour long kickboxing class. I had energy galore. 2012 lost my Dad and had to quit work, 2014 lost my Big Brother... and was too ill to travel to see him or for funeral... guilt and devastation. Had MANY, many health issues, tests, disease diagnoses, surgeries and procedures, and medications. I gained 125lbs...in 6 months... maybe 8. Size 24-26. Weight 290.*sigh* I am having to relearn my body and it's strengths, weaknesses, and limitations... a new word for me as I used to be able to push myself to do anything... literally. Now I have constant, debilitating fatigue. Muscle weakness, tremors, numbness like now... left arm fingers to just past elbow from typing, balance issues.. etc. A lot of issues. I use a cane, rollator, and wheelchair as needed and am usually stuck in bed at least 3 days a week. I am a positive, optimistic person who views obstacles as things to work your way around.. NOT BLOCKADES. I anticipate.. identify obstacles and find solutions. Such as exhaustion: walk in tub, wheelchair to cook and rearranged kitchen tools, rollator/wheelchair to walk.. etc. Balance issues: tub, rollator, adult tricycle, balance strengthening exercises using balance wobble board and disc. I have a background in exercise physiology, personal training, coaching and was studying to be a PT. I believe in modifying exercises and finding and using the tools needed to be the best you you can be. I am currently 259lbs. size 20-22. I look forward to getting to know you all and working together on our journey to health and happiness. As I said... I am a positive, optimistic person... BUT I AM 100% honest so... if/when I grumble.. please listen.. then give me a kick in the butt, smile, pat on the back and a good challenge!! I will do the same for you. Be Well!!

I'm a 58 yr old husband / dad , former Weight Watcher, retired postal worker, scifi geek.
Due to on the job injuries, that left me unable to perform my job duties, I've retired
I've undergone multiple surgeries to replace both hip and knee joints because of osteoarthritus.

My exercise routine is pretty simple. I use resistance bands in my lifting routine, I use a fitbit and I try to walk 10,000 steps a day.

I am 65 and I want to make permanent changes in my life that will benefit my health. I have an enlarged heart from bad choices I have made in the past. The worst choice I made two years ago when I left spark. I weighed 212 then. I now weigh in at 236 and I have been in this wheel chair for a year now I have started PT to help me become more mobile and strengthen my back can walk 300 feet now and I wont stop till I can dance again. I know spark can help if I accept the fact that this is not going to go away over night. I get discouraged easy these days but I am not throwing in the towel. I have just begun to fight. emoticon

Good morning!

Just joined this morning and love the feeling of this Forum.

I just turned 61 yesterday and I live in Texas with my husband and 2 cats.

I have several physical conditions that impacted my legs. On good ays a short walk of 1/4 mile is reasonable. Most days I need a walker or wheelchair to get around. I also have chronic nerve pain that is not well controlled and gives me tons of spasms. All this stems from when I had sepsis several years ago and really interfered with my ability to work as a nurse, until I found telephonic nursing. I now work from home.

My weight is a lifelong issue but exercise has been more challenging wit my limitations.

I look forward to the support I can get from and give to you all in the months ahead!

Hi all, I just signed on this group today. I must say , this Spark People page is one of the most complicated web pages I have ever navigated, and I am very internet savvy, so if anyone replies I have yet to find out how to get messages.

I am just about to turn 61, I was born with Cerebral Palsy. Growing up I was very out doorsy, I was slow to learn to walk, but learned at age four. Look out, from that point on, no one could stop me. I learned to ride a bike, emoticon Then I got a motorcycle, them my motorcycle endorsement and a driver's license.

I eventually settled down had two little girls, and life went on. My husband and I spent many vacations in the redwoods in California, camping, hiking. We were avid fishermen (woman), campers and bike riders.

Now as both of us have aged, we no longer do those things. My husband is retired and has had back surgery and my CP has caused me age faster and lose abilities.

I started using a cane 20 years ago. 6 years ago I got a rollator walker. 2 years ago I was told I was a diabetic, though no one in my family has Diabetes.

I set out to lose weight. I started walking in local stores and every where I could make my walker go. At first I could only go 300 steps. I changed my entire diet and my entire life. We do not eat any fast food, bagged food, precooked frozen dinners, no sugar, salt or canned foods.

My husband bought me a Fit Bit for our last anniversary, it's the best anniversary present I have ever received. It motivates me like nothing else. I am now up to half a mile a day, which is pretty much my limit, or my blood sugar will drop like a rock, and I will be forced to eat more carbs to raise my levels, defeating the purpose.

I have lost 45 pounds and counting. I feel better than I have in years.

I am just looking to connect with others out there.

I am featured on the Nova medical products web page as their current "super fan", I couldn't have done it with out their walker that will go nearly every where I go. I hope to hike a piece of the PCT this spring or summer!

I made quite a bit of head way in 2010. Then fatigue muscle cramps muske twitching and migraines had me resting a lot and comfort eating. It looks like it's an autoimmune nuerological issue. Drugs help but won't fix...so. Now I'm up to my highest weight. That's got to change.
One month in now, dedicated meal planning and tracking mean I'm down a kg. and this despite a week in bed with migraines. Pretty good!
It should take me a year to get down to a healthy weight.

Hi, I'm 44, live around Seattle, WA, USA. I've had a variety of health issues for a long time, made a bunch of progress a couple of years ago using a low carb eating plan (not for everyone, but worked well for me) and then this past summer I ate something I'm severely allergic to, and have been bedridden since, the steroids are causing major problems, the fibromyalgia is back with a vengeance, the chronic fatigue is back even with a CPAP, and I'm pretty close to 280 lbs, which at 5'6" puts me in a BMI range of 45. WHEE.

At this point in the game, I'm starting to try to get my head around what it means to be disabled. Some of the meds I'm on are starting to cause problems in my liver, which needs to turn around PDQ or I can't go back to the low carb diet because it's hard on your liver and kidneys.

Being in constant pain isn't really a new thing for me, I had fibromyalgia for 10 years. But this is a new, SHARP, swollen kind of feeling, and my body is just crumbling under a 65 lb gain in five months from the meds. I'm in bed a lot. I have a minimum of four appointments a week that make me get dressed four days a week at least, but I have no energy to manage a shower on the same day that I need to be dressed.

I have to use a rolling walker with a seat built into it for any kind of errand where I have to get out of the car unless it's a big store with electric carts, and if those are available, I'll use them every time. But because I put some care into my appearance whenever I can, I get a lot of dirty looks in the handicapped parking spots. I don't understand why people think that disabled has to mean wheelchair, or that if I can walk to the store to get the electric cart, then clearly I don't need it.

Anyway, I'm looking for encouragement to do what I can handle. My church is dropping off meals for us, and I don't get to control what goes into those, beyond the basic requests to not feed me any jalapenos please! So I'm just going to log the food I eat, whenever I can identify it, and do what I can and try to stay positive.

Hi, i'm 36 years and i'm starting anew, I weigh 270 pounds and aim to lose 28 pounds / 2 stone to start with by June. If anyone would like to add me as a friend I would LOVE that as I am here for the long haul.

Hi, My name is Ardi.
I had a spinal cord injury in 2003 from an epidural abscess. At the time I was paralyzed from the waist down. Presently I walk very slowly with a cane, but I am able to walk, for which I am very thankful. I walk to improve my walking, so that I will be able to walk the rest of my life. I do not want to become wheelchair bound, so I have to do something to improve my health, walking, well-being. I have about 118 pounds to lose, which does not help my health or my walking.

Hi, I'm not really new but I've been away in the non virtual world for a while busy with work and college.

My left hip joint is now completely eroded but despite that I'm still walking much to the surprise of the surgeon... and me after I saw the x-rays!

So I need a total hip replacement but I also need to lose another 13kgs before I can be referred to my local hospital as the local Care Commissioning Group will not approve anyone with a BMI above 40. I plan to hit that goal by April. Once referred there is a maximum 18 week lead time to operation so around August/September I hope.

In the meantime I'm learning about the op and what to expect before and after and have come back to help me keep to my goals.

I also tripped at work and broke my elbow back in July and have developed post traumatic arthritis in it... oh joy! Carry on taking the NSAIDS, painkillers and keep it mobile - so no other treatment for it really, but fortunately it's the left one.

Anyway, hope to chat on the boards.
