Just for a comparison, here is Hal Higdon's novice marathon training guide:
www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novi

.htm

Compare what he recommends as opposed to what you are planning. Running an 8 miler the weekend before with 2 or 3 low mileage runs the week leading up to race day then resting the two days before race day... Looks pretty much right on!

As my track coach used to tell us "Chronic dehydration leads to chronic fatigue." Remember to hydrate properly and you're ready to race! Water + electrolytes (aka sports drinks).

Knock 'em dead, kid!

Okay...so I did a tough 6.4 miler on the treadmill last night with hill and speed work and then tonight I did a 10.3 miler on the local greenway and ran up the mountain for some more hill work. It was a bit hot out and my dumb butt only drank diet sunkist all afternoon (instead of water) and the last thing I ate was at 1pm. AND it was like 85 out and humid as CRAP!!!!!! My legs were so fried from last nights run and bodypump class. I had to stop a bunch of times for like 10 second breaks on the way up the mountain because my legs are so sore...but oh well. I plan on doing a 5k Saturday and an 8-miler Sunday. I can't decide if I wanna do another 3 mile run tomorrow or Thursday. As of right now....I will end up with about 27.5 miles for the week without the 3-miler, which is less than my usual 35...but I should be tapering right??!!!

I'm planning on just a couple of short 3 or 4 milers the week of the marathon and taking that Thurs and Fri off beforehand.....:::keeping my fingers crossed:::

I guess I'm still scared since my 20-miler went bad! But, there were a lot of factors that caused me to have to stop at 14 that day....but still.... I just hope the race will go well....

I did 10 miles the week before the race. The race was on a Sunday, and I ran Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, tapering down each day. I think it was something like 5, 3, and 2.

You will be fine. I can't wait to hear about your race!

MGJARVI.... LOL I didn't feel that way when I was training for my first half marathon!!! In fact....the 8 mile mark was my WALL....getting past it was the hardest thing I had to do in training for my first half! I've been where you are and I know you will do great on race day!!!!

Just a newbie myself, but training my for my first half marathon with Team in Training and my race is also in 2 weeks. This is our running schedule for the last two weeks having our 12 mile LSD this Saturday too. They didn't tell us anything about other cross training the week of the race - so can't offer any advice there.

Mon - 5 miles
Wed - 4 miles
Thu - 3 miles
Sat - 6 miles LSD

Then week of race
Mon - 4 miles
Wed - 2 miles
Fri - 2 miles
Sat - rest
Sun - half marathon

Good luck to you!

Stela

Okay...so I have a tapering question. I've been averaging about 35 miles per week because that seems to be a good mileage for my body where I don't get injured, but get in quality miles. Well, I'm down to the last 2 weeks before my marathon and I'm in the tapering process. Last Saturday I did a 12 miler at a little bit faster pace than I will on the day of the marathon (cause my 6 foot 3 boyfriend was running 10 of the 12 with me and he gets a little over zealous.....I had to tell him to slow his roll!!!! LOL). Then, last night I did 6.4 on the treadmill incorporating 12 minutes of hill work and 12 minutes of speed work broken up into 1 minute intervals and 1 to 2 minutes of rest with no incline at a 10:00 pace.

Then, I took bodypump class. I plan on doing bodypump again this Wednesday but I've heard people say to not strength train the week "of" the marathon so I am planning on just taking that week off from bodypump (unless taking it that Monday before the marathon is safe???) I'm running my last 5k this Saturday and then I'm gonna do my last "technically" long run Sunday which is just a measley 8 miler.

How many more miles is safe to include this week?? I'm not really sure the best tapering strategy. I had planned a 12 miler this afternoon but don't wanna do too much if I shouldn't.

Also, next week, I only plan on maybe a 3 or 4 miler on Monday and "maybe" Wednesday morning just to keep my legs fresh and then I'm taking Thursday and Friday off completely and resting. Is this a good strategy?? I hate being a newbie!!!! LOL
