Wish I could help you, but even if I get C I just have to wait it out. Taking anything for it will have me in the little room for the next day or two (until I take something for the D). Hope someone can help you out.

Looking for help with IBS-C. I have decades of experience with D then A, but this latest C is really miserable. Have GI appointment Wed, but not hopeful. I can't use MIRALAX. What works for you?

Yes, "A" is for alternating. I'm that way. I tend to spend more time constipated as opposed to diarrhea, but when it hits me, Katy bar the door!

I think A is alternating between D and C, but not sure. They also need a G, because I alternate between D and G (gas). Can get C, but that is after I have to take Immodium.

I'm new here but after last night, have decided that I don't want another episode like that one. I don't know the difference between a, b, c, d. Just know I was miserable. Have always suffered from constimpation but not IBS. Last night was a first.
Oops, just figured out D is diarrhea and C is constipation. What is A? All? Carol

I have D. Used to have A. This works well for my D, but can't testify how it works for C or A.

My PCP and gastroenterologist both had me try Align. It worked ok, but not great. A friend convinced me to try some doTERRA products and after two bottles of DigestZen PB Assist +, I'm sold and won't be going back to Align. I'm not a dealer, so this isn't a sales pitch. http://doterra.com/US/en/p/digestzen-pb-as
sist

They also carry the essential oil blend I've been taking for the D. So long as I take it every day (with breakfast), it has kept me basically D-free. http://doterra.com/US/en/p/digestzen-blend

Hey guys! I'm new to this group but not to ins!I stumbled upon this forum topic on a google search actually! I had a quick question. I've been taking align for years now and I feel like its not working as well. Can it be taken twice a day? I saw one commenter who said they take it twice and I've been debating trying that so I wanted to see if anyone has tried it with any luck

Thanks!

Oh, yes. Due to seasonal allergies most of the year, I take allergy antihistamine and also some decongestant. That helps with some of the inflammation pain in the gut.

I had to have more and more testing done, and didn't finish with the final one of swallowing a camera pill. It just became so expensive, and I found out that the sphincter from my stomach is too small or narrow so I also worried about the pill just having problems. Anyway, I have the anti-body for celiac, but inflammation showed up in a diagnostic x-ray in small intestine where they can't reach it - no biopsy possible. So I live with my IBS symptoms the best I can. My triggers are dairy, MSG, and gluten. I don't eat meat. That doesn't leave much for me to eat. During the diagnostic x-ray they saw that I have acid reflux. Didn't know that. I've also suffered for untold years with endometriosis. Finally everything converged with the craziness of perimenopause and I wanted to die I was in so much agony. I arranged for a partial hysterectomy. Then my GYN suggested the antidepressant Prestiq which seems to help with female symptoms - they don't know why or how, but it does. It helped a lot. But then I moved. I had a few weeks where I wasn't taking it regularly and oh the pain! It came back bad. I also take gas-x at night, and non-dairy probiotic enzymes sometimes. Staying active and doing cardio every day, or 4 times a week at least helps keep things moving better. Cardio and things like sit-ups or crunches help move the gas along comfortably. Stress is a bad trigger, and I have to do Yoga deep breathing and relaxation techniques to keep my guts from cramping too badly and starting a spiraling problem of C & D. If I have a painful bloat and C episode I need to work on relaxing the guts and muscles, and I use a hot water bottle, and will lay on my stomach on the floor and watch tv or whatever, and visit the bathroom a lot. Then it's back to taking care of myself with the usual regimen. I will try to get a new GI doctor here and get further help.

Finally things have simmered down abit, well alot. Back to the gym which is a great help for me after having had norovirus and then put my back out, all is on the mend. Hubby and I did 1 1/2 hours of weights and cardio, and then the sun came out for one of only a few days this month, makes it easy to feel great.

Hope everyone is well.

I've had ibs-d for many many years.. I find that taking metamucil daily helps, and immodium and bentylol for flare-ups or when I have to go somewhere and want to be safe. Also, the codeine in my atasol 30's which I have for migraines, really helps but that is a narcotic so have to be careful not to take too often.

Boy oh boy,

Am I ever glad this Team is here. I'm at my wit's end. Most of the time I struggle with the D side of things as I am right now. My own fault, I tried a little bit of corn last night and it was (and I knew it at the time) a lot tough. A few weeks ago I had a little frozen peaches and cream and I was fine with that. Just this week I got over noro virus, 8 days in the bathroom. Now this, which has caused terrible gas, bloating cramps and you got it D with a major case of hemmies and I am going so often I'm having a bit of bright red blood when I go every 1/2 hour, this just started a few hours ago, but I have had it with the hemmies before but this is the most uncomfortable I've been with all of this since I started. My poor little bottom never had a chance to recover when I hit it with corn.

When I had the noro I took immodium for 2 days before the D started to slow down, then it took a week of Restorolax to get back to normal, I just want to scream really. So this time I'm taking Pepto because I'm so nauseous, took an epsom salt soak for 20 and bought some Tucks, which I've just left there for now. I have a script here for hemmie med but I know if I were to use it I'd just be running it out in 10 minutes if I lasted that long. So, the only thing I know what to do about it is wait till the Pepto works enough so I can use the hemmie med.

BTW I do find that simethecone (gas ex) works well for the bloating, and I may be at that later too. I swear I'll never eat fresh corn on the cob again, don't care how good it is, and another culprit is coffee. I've been trying to have it again this week and my body is saying no no.

Anyway, I'm ranting now, and desperate and feel like I could scream.

Do others you with D suffer the hemmie issue as well?

At least sitting here writing is getting my mind off the pain, and I know you all know what it's like.

Karen emoticon

You might want to try Ovol to help with the gas. It is great from the standpoint that it is from the makers of Divol one of the heartburn medications that have been available over the counter for years.

My most favorite laxative that has been helping me beyond words is getting rid of the white flour and replace it with whole grains, if at all possible. I fought doing that for so long, but now that I do, coupled with benefiber 3x daily and all the 8 c. of water, and my body is very happy. Course when I hit big stressors my body will react, but I find my recovery time much quicker and less painful. You'll find that exercise also will be an excellent regulator. I've been with sparkie for a year now and my IBS is so much better! It'll never be gone, but it at least is livable! I hope you have the same results with your journey!

I've been having a hard few weeks alternating between C with urgent need to go to the bathroom that is unproductive and bouts of D. I bought chewable chocolate flavored laxative at my pharmacy - I was nervous about it because I am very sensitive to laxative and afraid it will cause painful D - but it was very gentle and it helped me get back into a more regular pattern. Still feeling a little off, but way better today. What laxatives work best for you?

Hi there, I've had Chronic C all my life, just his last year have I been able to control it. Yes, I've had pretty good results with Benefiber, but I have other things added at the same time: Probiotic, 3 fish oils, 800 mg Magnesium/Calcuim. Not all Magnesiums are created equal, the only one that doesn't hurt my intestines is Tri Boron Plus, made by Twinlab. I take the Benefiber 3x day.

I was diagnosed with IBS in November. I'm still learning my triggers. I avoid quite a few foods that I use to enjoy like peanut butter and apples. I also have issues with milk and yogurt. I'm taking meds three times a day. I found it helps a lot. I do experience the gas and bloating. I never thought about trying gas-x. I do find the bloating to be very frustrating at times.

I have a question and I think it could show up with any type of IBS. When I have trouble with bloating I will get severe pain in my right arm (usually), my right side and sometimes chest. Then start burping so that I know it is gas buildup. Do any of you have that type or problem and what do you do for it? Tonight it started up and I found it got better when I was up and feeding the dogs, but it is coming back again now. I have taken 3 extra strength gas-X type tablets.

I have ibs-c and I was taking miralax, but it did nothing, I took it for 2-3 days every 4 hours to 'get me going', orders from doc, still nothing.

She suggested cirtucel (I'm gluten free) and also because it's all soluble fiber and she said that more soluble is best, easier for your body to handle. At first it wasn't helping, but then I read that when you eat you should eat soluble fiber foods first, so I decided to try and focus on adding more soluble fiber foods to my diet, I eat a lot of insoluble. I also started taking the citrucel about two hours before I eat in the morning, and then 2 hours before I eat dinner. It started working slowly, I started going every two days, then every other day, and now I'm pretty regular with going daily. This seems to have made things so much easier!

ETA: Also, I started adding flax to my smoothies. :D

I am having trouble with D, I guess..Loose stools and I find that when I go to the bathroom, during flare-up times, I can't seem to get myself wiped clean enough. I go through alot of TP, during those times and it still seems like an issue..Does anyone else have that problem?

I'm a -D. I was wondering if the Spark book was useful for IBS people. Advice to eat balanced (lots of veggies & whole grains) simply isn't feasible for myself, and I'm sure many fellow sufferers.

I spent 3 years misdiagnosed with Crohn's before a new GI diagnosed the real problem as acid reflux and severe IBS. During that time, I found that the most helpful thing for me was to stick to the BRAT diet when things got bad - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. I learned about it from another Crohn's patient, and it seems to help everything calm down. I also eliminate caffeine and acidic beverages like decaf sodas and fruit juices.

I didn't know about the preservatives in cereal being triggers, but have been trying to stay away from them because of so many being carcinogens. What I find funny is that they all seem to have that preservative except Honey Nut Cheerios. I haven't found out why the others have it and Honey Nut doesn't. I stay away from most aspartame products, too. The sugar alcohols are also big triggers.

It is crazy how people react and their different triggers. If I had the brocolli and cauliflower you had I would be in serious pain all over.

I forgot to mention last night that I've learned that certain commercial food additives can cause D. Namely, excessive amounts of aspartame/phenylalanine (it's in artificial sweeteners and in practically every "sugar free" product out there), TSP (trisodiumphosphate) which is used as a preservative in many cereals (like Cheerios), and olean (the "fat free" fat that is used in "fat free" potato chips and causes...er....bum leakage).

I still consume beverages with aspartame in them, but make it a point to not have it be my only source of hydration. The other two I avoid like the plague after having very upleasant experiences in the past.

I've had a truly terrible 2 weeks with D. Going to the bathroom 6-7 times a day, horrendus cramping and pain, and nausea. I started eating oatmeal for breakfast 3 days ago and it seems to be helping. No D at all today. I only used the bathroom 1x today, which is unusual even when I'm not having an attack (I'm usually a 2-3x/day person), but I don't feel C. At least not yet. I ate broccoli/cauliflower/carrots for dinner last night and some fruit today, and plenty of fluids, though, so I think there's been enough insoluable fiber to balance the oatmeal. I'll eat some more veggies tomorrow, too. Though, I tend to not get C very often, if ever.

Even if I'm only feeling better for a few days, I'll take the break. The cramping and pain was really taking it out of me.

In addition to being LI, I have found I have some specific trigger foods: Lettuces of all types, raw spinach, egg yolks, greasy/oily meals. I've also learned that over eating at any meal, regardless of what I'm eating, triggers the gas and cramping and D.

Follow your bliss.

Hi all,

I'm IB a.....never know what to expect. Watch the diet like crazy. I can only have fibres things like lettuce in small doses. The firmess of a particular leaf causes issues too. No sweet pototoes, turnips, peppers, eggplant, only soft beans, nothing waxy.

Oddly enough I started years after, but still after a gall bladder removal. I think it has something to do with not having bile stored in your gall bladder to break down some things.

Never think about taking Pepto or Immodium for fear of going the other way.

Geez, fun stuff eh!

I can usually handle the ceasar salads okay because the Romaine lettuce is one I can handle, but I can't manage the hearts of Romaine (too fibrous). I cannot handle the regular salads they have at restaurants, though. Iceburg lettuce is a killer, plus it doesn't have many nutrients.

It doesn't hurt to try it anyway. I'm actually having one of those days even though I had the imodium this a.m. I take an extra dose then or even some pepto or maalox and then it usually calms down fairly fast. Good luck with it.

Thanks! I am going to give Imodium a try! Seems like all my problems began after I had half of my thyroid removed, so I wonder if it is somehow hormonal from that?

Hi All, I am new to this forum but have been a long time IBS-D sufferer. I find that sometimes no matter what I do or take for it, I will still have the D. I have been on a medication call Lotronex which is for IBS-D only. It is very restricted and only certain dr's can prescribe it. It has worked fairly well with me--I have gone as long as six months before an episode. I also take 1200 units of calcium which has a constipating affect for those with D dominant IBS. I am no expert by any means on IBS-D but I have done all the drinks, soluble and insoluble fibers, imodium, etc. I have found that sometimes nothing works for that day. But I keep trying. Carbonated beverages are no good for IBS sufferers; that I know from experience. I also recommend the website helpforibs.org; they have some useful tips. (By the way, my IBS started right after I had my gallbladder removed. My sisters also have had theirs' removed and suffer some IBS symptoms, just not as bad as mine.) Without my medication, I have D every day. So keep trying different things; what can it hurt.

Cheryl - I agree. It has really helped me. There are still many days that EVEN that trick doesn't help me. But the majority of the time, when I take it I can go out more often without worry.

Imodium has totally helped change my life for the D. I take one a day...learned this on Sparkpeople! I can go out and eat, shop and do normal things now without having to worry. Take it when you get up in the morning. Believe me...IT Works!!!!

Hi. Relatively new to IBS. I have D. Used to be alot of C, but now I get D every nite. Not sure why. I can drink lots of coffee in the morning, and not have any ill effects. But by the time I get home, workout, and then eat dinner, I usually get hit with the D at bedtime. Anyone else have this?

Kama is ready to take it all the way!

I was diagnosed with IBS with D 4 years ago, but had for many years preveiously. At the time I started on a probiotic, fiber choice supplement, and a prescription pill. After a year of tremors that could not be diagnosed, I realized that the prescription pill had bad side effects. Promptly took myself off of it. With the probiotic and fiber, and watching what I eat seemed to have it somewhat under control. I started with losing weight about a month ago, hoping that with the regular exercise and eating healhier I would finally get my self better. I now seem to have a combination of IBS with C and D. I will have days will I feel like I have to poop, but can never fully get myself "emptied." If I make a mistake with what I eat, then I have D. I am completely confused and frustated. I don't have good insurance, so I can't really go to the doctor. Any advice would be appreciated.

I get good results with Align also but it was expensive so I went with the generic (from Walgreens) which does not work as well.

Oh, DDD,
You have had a really bad experience! I am so sorry. I hope things get better with you.
I have C a lot and I think it is related to spastic colon- when I get really angry then I have more problems. I also wonder if it has anything to do with my new medication. I guess I really ned to see my doctor to find out more or find one that will tell what's going on without subjecting me to the colonoscopy?

Sorry, I haven't been on the site for awhile because of work. I had a colonoscopy last year. The doctor gave me instructions for how to clean myself out. The problem was, I didn't get completely cleaned out. I told the pre-op nurse and she basically blew it off. Anyway, the doctor could not get very far because of the blockage of poop. She got 2 polyps. After all was said and done, I wasn't able to poop for 2 weeks. I showed up at her office and she sent me for an xray. I was full of U know what. She told me I have Obstipation, which is obstructive constipation, a form of IBS. Another name for it is sluggish colon. She said I need another colonoscopy in a year which is now. This past year has been quite a challenge. She prescribed Amitiza and 2 scoops of Miralax twice a day (yes 4 scoops a day). That was a disaster, because I had accidents. This past year has been an experiment in how much Miralax to take since I bailed on the Amitiza. The gas is horrendous and embarassing. I have an appointment with her this coming Thursday. Before the colonscopy I pooped every time I peed ( is this TMI?) and I didn't really have the symptoms Ihave now. She told me if she knew I have what I have, she would have given me different preparation instructions.
Sorry to be a little graphic, I just don't know how to explain it otherwise.

Blessings! Dee

Question about Activia. Is it supposed to make you regular when you have IBS-C and gas or what? Every time I try it I am in the little room within 5 minutes with D.

I saw the dietician last week for help with weight loss. She recommended I get more fiber and increase my calories to 1400 minimum. She also said that I could go ahead and eat the vegetables causing problems, like brocolli and cabbage by just taking Beano first. Well I tried it and had some cole slaw. The first time was okay, but it didn't make for too good of an appointment at the doctor's today. I don't know what the dietician was thinking.

I was diagnosed with IBS and irritable colon and placed on diets and medications for those disorders for 30 years. Finally after getting really sick and accidentally finding a doctor who recognized my symptoms I was diagnosed with mast-cell related IBS. Once I began taking H1 and H2 types of antihistamines my IBS went away - as long as I avoided my triggers (wheat, milk, onions, curry, MSG, alcohol). So combining a diet with benadryl and ranitidine, each twice a day, with a diet free of my triggers I suddenly became healthy. Check out the tms.org website for more information. Even most GI doctors are not familiar with this rare but frequently misdiagnosed disorder. Good luck.

Yes, DDD, tell more about your experience with the colonoscopy!

I know I will have to have one in a few years -- ok I know I should probably have one sooner! -- but I am honestly afraid of what it will do to my system. It just seems like a recipe for disaster for someone with IBS!

I'm 26 I have IBS C and D, acid reflux disease, and I had my gallbladder removed over 3 years ago. I dont have any kids, i've never been overweight, or had anything else wrong with me. Thus it seems my doctors didnt and still dont take me seriously when I complain about the pain. (It took my doctors 6 months to finally diagnose me with gallstones because I was too young and not overweight they didnt want to waste time doing the tests because)

I find the doctors have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to IBS. They recommend diets that have a tendency to trigger my attacks. And they put me on different medications that do nothing but cause more problems. The tests are never ending and lead to other problems. I've given up all hope on the doctors and their "experimental" treatments.

I find the best thing for me is to stick to a very bland boring low fat diet. I make fresh fruit juice and blend in my vegetables so they are easier to digest and dont cause the pain eating a salad does.

I also read books written by other sufferers of IBS they truly understand and have a better idea of what triggers attacks. Reading First Year: Irritable Bowel Syndrome, by Heather Van Vorous, and Eating for IBS cookbook has given me tons of tips and great food ideas. I got more help out of those two books than I ever did from the doctor.

DDD,
Are you saying that the colonoscopy brought on your problems with C and D? I haven't had a colonoscopy in years- was going to a specialist but then became unemployed and couldn't afford him. Then have just tried to control my C with lacttulose and trying to have less stress. haha- now that(the less stress part) really works...(Miralax doesn't work, causes more problems)

I go between C with gas and bloating and D. I take Align also. I think I may be coming up on the 6 week mark. Every time I call the doctor, they recommend me to try a different regimen. More Miralax, less Miralax. My colonoscopy last year really brought all of this on.

Blessings! Dee

After a three-year struggle with IBS-D, I came across information about Align and decided to try a 28 day course. I was unimpressed for the first few weeks but started seeing a slight change toward the end and bought another month's worth. Six weeks was the "miracle" week for me, and since then I've gotten better and better. I'd forgotten what "normal" bathroom habits were, so I'm still working on that. I'm not cured, but I sure am in better control.

I don't see anyone discussing the fact that they are eating Soluble Fiber at the same meal as when they eat Insoluble fiber! We must eat them together! The soluble fiber turns to a gel that helps the insoluble fiber move through the intestines! For instance I am having home made fish sticks for supper tonight and I am serving cubed, seasoned and roasted soluble yams with it, plus a insoluble salad (which I don't eat very often) But I know the yams help push out the leafy greens. If I'm not eating a soluble veggies with a meal I make sure I have bread or grains to act as a gel to push it out. Plus I have 3 doses of Metamucil Clear and natural everyday.. to help push out the fiber and whatnot..

Probiotics are AWESOME for me. I take acidophilus daily and it has helped just about every aspect of my health. Right now I am in a bad bout with my digestive system. My problems are with D and epigastric pain. Already had the gall bladder out and one benign poly removed. I've been doing really well, but ate too much raw fiber the other day and now my body is yelling at me.

I'm getting there, though. The pain is a little less each day.

I have more of a problem with D than C. But on the days I have C I am just as miserable. I have been eating a lot of fruits and right now I am feeling okay. Oatmeal is also helping.

I am having a very difficult time with C. I have other problems-high BP and chorestral (didn't know that till recently) that I am taking medication for. I don't know if that is contributing to my increase in C or not. I have been trying to drink more water and eat more fruit, and watch salt- these I have all changed in the last month, decided needed to just change. I didn't know how much sodium is in everything!
Anyway, things were a little better for a while then worse again. I take lactulose when I feel I need it. Troulbe is, I think it makes my "system" upset and then I wake up at night-early, like 3am- and can't get back to sleep. And I feel I need more these days. I try taking it in the morning so it won't disturb my sleep but that doesn't work many times. Maybe if I took some every day?
I am glad to be able to share because it is a delicate subject but here people understand.
Thanks,

My current self-prescribed regime:
2 cups water -first thing
1tsp w/2 more cups water & 4 fish oil pills
(b'fast)
At least 8 more glasses of water through the day
30-35g of fiber a day
2-4 fruits a day
3-5 veg a day
Little to no overly-refined products, as they will lead to D.
If I notice ANY reduction in bowel movements, and I have been exercising, I will take a stool softener. If that doesn't work over night, I'll upgrade to 1/2 dose of dulcolax.
A day or two before my period, I'll always do a senna tea, just once.

Usually, if I can avoid the C, then I can avoid the D.

In December I developed both IBS and Gerd.
I took omeprazole and strictly followed the "allowed foods" list with some improvement.

While web surfing, I came across an eating plan that by the second day had me trouble free! I am still trouble free and enjoying the wide, almost unlimited things I eat. The key to this plan is basically no grains and protein in the same meal, fruits are eaten with nothing else, certain vegetables with meat and certain others omitted.

The name of the plan is Pain Free in 1 Day by Sherry Brescia. The website is www.GreatTasteNoPain.com.
You can download a free 4 day sample menu to see if this is suitable for your condition.

I have IBS-C, and recently, I've been taking align twice a day, one in the morning one at night, miralax twice a day, morning and night, and two tbsp of benefiber at night. I'm also eating ALOT of fiber (around 50g per day), my FAVORITE is the fiber one caramel bars!, and I've been eating one activia yogurt with my lunch each day. This seems to be helping! I think alot of it is the 2 tbsp of benefiber at night because I was doing all of the other things and I was suffering, but once I added that it started to improve.
Anyone else have any success from benefiber?

Is it considered IBS more if you have no signs of other illnesses like cholitis, chron's, diverticulitis? I had the colonoscopy and endoscope and they both came back negative for any problems. So the fact that I have so many problems, is that definitely IBS and just caused by a sensitivity to different foods? And how does one figure out what foods when you go for a while with no problem eating something (like tomatoes) and suddenly are really sick from the same food? I have tried figuring with a food journal and couldn't figure out the trigger foods.
