I've read so many posts, I don't know who knows what.
There is a FB page, set to private that is called Paynena Intermittent Fasting. Come join us.
Then there is a FB page called Sparking Seniors and Friends.
My email is grammyb8@mac.com for anyone that wants to contact me. This group had great team members.... I will miss those that I don't find elsewhere! Especially our Canadian friends.

I joined an IF group on Facebook called Panena's Intermittent Fasting -- it is currently set to public but will become private in a couple of Days.

I have also set up a Facebook Group called Sparking Seniors and Friends which is more of a Social group of friends I met here on SparkPeople. You don't have to be over 65 to join.

Karen the reason it is only for Americans is because American Corp. are underwriting it, and I guess they only want it for the themselves which to me is a cop out because this site could have been maintain if they would simply have charged everyone a nominal fee. The owner is free to do that but, it really goes against his statement as to why he started it in the first place. A Google group might be a real hassle with all the e-mail. So for us Canadians & other countries, it looks like it is FB especially if you want to remain in contact with the same people. It just needs to be a private group.

It does look free (now) but looks more like a fitness rather than diet minded platform. I'm not so much of a facebook fan, but I'd love to keep in touch with y'all and continue to discuss if/lc over 40. I feel like you are my people...

I am planning to start a couple of private Facebook groups for those who want to keep in touch once Spark closes down. From what I have heard the new Spark format not only excludes Canadians and other "foreigners" it does not have teams or groups like this one.

Some people are talking about Google groups but I am not familiar with that format so if I start something it will be on Facebook and I will let you know.

Karen, I believe there are free parts to Spark America but I couldn't join to have a look because I'm a Canadian.

My question is based on Spark America. It's to be a paid service, right? So doesn't matter if Canadians are included differently (Spark Canada?) but what I enjoyed about Spark was that it was not a subscription site. Is my understanding correct?

this has been a great place to "talk" to others! I'm so sad for this news! well, guys... it is now 10 years since I joined. I have had success and failure, but it's always been a place to meet people that I can talk about these things with. And now Spark is being taken down August 17, 2021... If anyone wants to talk to me my email is grammyb8@mac.com (Lois Bartell) I'm on facebook as well. Good luck to everyone! This has just been a great private place to chat about diet/food success/failure and get encouragement.

Yes, I think everyone is aware, it is sad for anyone does not live in the States but not much we can do about it, try to save the recipes you have collected while here, that will be a big help the sad part is losing contact with the friends we have made.

Slowly but surely, I'm now on the keto bandwagon... with OMAD,, and feeling great. Such a habit to eat, so I still think about eating off/on all day -- and then say to self.... "I don't need to!" Since I love veggies, if I weight all the things in my salad, I go over 20 gms CHO if I don't subtract the fiber. With net carbs, I'm pretty on board. Also, going grocery shopping more often so I don't buy huge amounts, only what I will eat in a day or two. That has been very helpful to me.

Thanks for the info, I never eat over 20 grams but that is not taking into account the fiber either, scale is still going in the right direction & I have loss 3 inches on my hips which is great. I don't have a lot more energy like everyone says we should have but I guess in time that will come also. I am very grateful for this team!

HERBSANDFLOWERS,
there are so many factors in an overall weight (number on the scale).

- time of day
- how much you ate or drank recently (food mid-digestion)
- water retention for whatever reason
- amount of lean mass
- amount of body fat

If one starts exercising, and that is new, one can gain a fair bit of muscle mass, and that can mask body fat loss. I don't know how many grams of carbs you ate, but when stored in your liver and muscles (which is one of the first places they are stored) they are also stored with about 4 times that weight of water. This is the reason for a quick early "weight" loss when starting to eat Keto, you burn off those stored carbs in your liver and muscles, and with all the water loss around that it is about 5 to say 8 pounds in the first week or two.

So its complicated. It is the long term change in eating patterns that really matters. From what I know, about two higher carb days in a week will kill weight loss for that week, despite say 5 other "on plan" days.

One day here or there is not a big deal, it is the overall path.

Here is weird thing, my weight was not changing much but I was losing inches but last night I gave in to a craving. I had 20 macadamias dipped into natural peanut butter which put me out of my carb count weighed in this am expecting to se that I gained instead I got a 3 lb. loss. I guess that might change in a few days but it sure surprised me.

Cr = creatinine BUN Blood Urea Nitrogen, Usually done together to look at kidney function altho BUN reflects liver function somewhat, too.

Yes, we were very fortunate to find a liver quick for the young girl who was admitted with complete liver failure... BTW she had gotten married a week earlier at a "gift" from a local mall and apparently took all the tylenol within a few days of marriage....

Yesterday, we had a freak storm here,,, a guy was loading a mower into a closed trailer and a tree landed on it and he was killed. I'm in awe of all the times, I did something dangerous and was protected and survived. I can't imagine (family out of town) what it would be like to hear of a sudden death in such a manner!!

RETURNTOTHIN,
I can't imagine going into a coma, needing a liver transplant and having those in care of me finding one that is compatible, and having that done. Wow!

What is "Cr"?

I tried to get conversion of Canada numbers vs US... and according to what I found your Cr isn't too bad. Don't take any Ibuprofen (motrin, advil or their cousins, though, as that is cleared by the kidneys.... Tylenol is cleared by the liver.. Both can be toxic. I worked in a transplant program, we got a young girl in, in complete liver failure because she took so much Tylenol. :( Can you imagine going into a coma and waking up to hear, "While you were asleep, we did a liver transplant."???????

Well, I half fasted yesterday, just ate a romaine salad and 3 pickled eggs that were left -- and FINALLY the scale cooperated with a return to a lower number. Today is fasting with liquids! We will see how well, I do..... After low calorie day on Wed, then lower on Thurs, the scale dropped this morning. It was so encouraging! Low calorie day today, but I did go groceriy shopping to get my Romaine lettuce for my big salad tomorrow. I do have a shower to go to and apparently they are going to have a “waffle bar” with toppings and lots of fruit — so I’m going to find out if anyone will be offended if I bring my salad with me. I’m trying to stay consistent with 20 net carbs or less :) I asked my daughter, she said, bring it... so I'm going to.

Tomorrow is Sat,,, Lots on my to do list besides the shower... one of which is to clean out my car. Things that I had neglected for months, I finally got one done. An antique picture of my grandparents wedding certificate -- about 18x24. Cost me a lot, but I didn't have the heart to dispose of it.. It's only money, right. The library is taking books, so I have a couple boxes to bring there. Then there are things that need to go into my storage building and then I'll be able to vacuum my car. I did get lost in the garden section of the Home Depot today and found a beautiful tiger lily. I love orange. So getting back in the garden is a goal, too.

The wind came up tonight and altho the temp is 72, it is cold out there! So, glad to get some breezes in here and then snuggle up under a blanket!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Dairy is definitely classified as carnivore but some people can't tolerate it. The lovely 0 carb Greek yogurt from Costco doesn't seem to agree with me so I limit my dairy to a small amount of spicy gouda. The spicy bits are not technically carnivore as they are hot peppers but they don't seem to bother me and I love them so I have them.

I keep track of my P:E ratios as well. It keeps me from eating too much fat. When I was first doing keto I treated fat like a free food and, of course, did not lose any weight. The reason I don't eat veggies is because I don't react well to the toxins in them. Hopefully, I will be able to add some veggies back into my diet at some point -- just for the variety -- but if I can't I am happy eating just meat and animal products.

Loved my roasted slices of cabbage and some asparagus spears and today, I’m going to add onions… and Brussel Sprouts since spears are gone :)

I do wear masks (for the most part) because I respect business requirements… Have to admit I sometimes forget.. haven’t been yelled at so far :) I did read an article that covid isn’t spread on hard surfaces,,, interesting, new info every time we turn around. Distance has decreased to 3 ft, I understand.

I do record my food intake — after I eat, mostly for information and to look back. OMAD certainly limits my calories and protein. I hope I can sustain OMAD for several months (except for birthday dinners) but I will remain sweet/carb free :) I have decided to just follow OMAD and not any extended fasts for now. Actually being faithful to that will be a win-win… for me. Scale giving me fits,,, so I changed batteries, moved it and this morning, it was more rational! So, I’ll give it another chance! :) before I throw it away :)

On to plant lilacs and sweet shrub today...

I plan to circle my garden with Marigolds… I need to buy a few more packets :) and probably add a fence :)

RETURNTOTHIN,
I eat a fair bit of plant based stuff. I aim for colourful things (green peppers, dark romaine lettuce ...) I'm pretty sure that deeper colours mean more nutrition.

It's not that I eat a ton of veggies, but some. Actually more veggies than before Keto, ... unless you count potatoes and rice as veggies. But anything without colour (potatoes, rice ...) I seriously avoid now.

After Ideal Protein, I didn't return to "anything" but I certainly added carbs to my food intake. I'm finding intermittent fasting is really the only thing I can handle these days... and mostly OMAD... Then I'm full and done :) I try to stay Keto... at least under 30 net, but most days 20 total.... I do like my vegetables :)

I too tried "Ideal Protein" ... a bunch of pretty good protein powder packages (mostly) and some bars. It was the start of my return of eating anything to mindfully eating.

Lois strict keto is technically 20 grams (total not net) of carbohydrates a day.

That being said... I believe different people's bodies react differently to different amounts of carbs. For instance - if you are a younger healthy and active person, you could very easily eat more carbs and have no weight gain.

You're 80, probably not very active, you might want to keep your carbs on the lower end. But for what it's worth... if I go over on veggie carbs, which I often do (I'm 62) I don't worry about it. Going over on processed carbs, gluten, sugar, etc. is an entirely different thing.

This is my own perspective, as is the issue on masks. I don't wear them around my own family or friends, but my perspective is that if you do wear it - you're protecting others, not yourself. For a private gathering, I don't have any problems going mask free, especially now that I've had my shots. Going out in a world where there are people still getting it (I live in San Antonio - the 7th largest city in the US) I still prefer to protect and be protected. At least for now.

Keto..... do I have to eat less than 20 gms of carbs/day to stay keto or less than20 gms of net carbs/day? I do love my veggies!

I'm eating OMAD... and trying to get adequate protein in. but my old age metabolism makes losing very stubborn... I was on Ideal Protein and lost some weight, but it was expensive and miserable -- so I ended up gaining all back and decided to just do low carb. I'm probably 10-15 pounds lighter than I was a year ago,,, nothing to write home about.

just have to share here,,, thoughts I had today!
Masks: each to his own. I was in Arkansas where the mask mandate was lifted. I spent time with my niece and her family and my SIL and my other niece, and my SIL boyfriend. Masks were not in sight, ever.. I also spent most of 3 days at the Creation Museum and Ark and after people were in for awhile, about half to 3/4 were without masks. And of course no masks in the restaurants with no tables blocked off. Although I was beastly tired when I got home (after driving most of the night),and basically spent 5 days in my recliner, I’m fine as usual. After a trip to town, bank, tenants house, and a GSIL’s house, I went in the grocery store today, thinking “I wonder if masks do any good.” The states with no lock down have better stats than those with strict lock down. It makes one wonder. Since I’m 80 and have thought this death thing through deeply. I’m fine with going out and and being in groups…. and I haven’t had vaccine. James, I mainly eat beef, some chicken, eggs and a bit of pork.

When I had my first shot of Pfizer I felt nothing the first day and a bit of achiness the next morning. The vaccination site was only sore if I poked at it. I get my 2nd shot in about 10 days.

No problems at all with shot #2. Glad it's done, and now I (and others) can feel more comfortable in our daily lives. I don't expect much to change, but I will be socializing with friends more within reason, and am happy about that.

I had no problem with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (shot 1). Just a little tenderness where the injection was ... like muscle soreness, but I expected something.

I had no reaction to it. Didn't feel unwell in any way. My friend Carol was not so lucky. She felt really bad for about a day.

I get my second shot of the Pfizer vaccine in a couple of weeks.

Since the beginning of the year, I have been eating mostly carnivore and enjoying it.

Way to go James - I have my second one day after tomorrow, and then I'll be done. Interested to see if I have chills/fever like many of my relatives did. We'll see. No problems with #1.

Had a 80% keto Easter. Had a serving of sweet potatoes which was delicious, and one bite of German potato salad. I was quite happy, and think I did "pretty" good. Not perfect, but I didn't go off the rails.

Very quiet here. How is everyone doing?

I'm going to book a vaccination for COVID-19 in about 2 hours. I'm eligible to book just after midnight today.

Last summer I was going walking with my daughter but then my leg started to hurt and I quit doing it. My leg is doing better now and we have a small gym with a treadmill and weights in our amenities centre -- it's closed now but I plan to use it when it is open again. And go back to walking with my daughter when the snow goes away. Another option is to put on some music that I like and dance to it -- no specific dance steps just move to the music -- that can be done seated as well.

Hey Bev Anne - can you do upper body exercises in your home? Like arm circles - even with no weights, it's really hard work! Maybe some chair crunches? I am trying to incorporate ~some~ exercise while I'm stuck in a boot. Wish I could go to a gym, but that's not happening until after the vaccine is integrated around a lot.

I am doing the best I can right now. Not perfect. No excuses, but eating is totally a self soothing thing to do. Thank goodness for macadamia nuts.

I aim for 30 gram of carbs a day or fewer. I don't discount fibre. I aim for about 50 to 60 grams of protein, and fat is sort of unlimited, though I try not to go above about 2400 calories, but I'm a guy.

CHERIE38,
about 7 years for me.

The thing about a number of products, especially sweeteners is that they arbitrarily decide not to count certain things and lower their carb count.

Legislation allows not listing things that have less than 1 gram per serving. In theory to reduce clutter on the ingredients listing. For example, you find things like powdered Sucralose, "bulked" with maltodextrin. Well the packages have 1 gram of the stuff in a serving size, and they list zero calories, but in reality it is 0.8 grams of carbs in that 1 gram package, yet the rules allow them to ignore that 0.8 in the serving, so they say zero carbs and calories.

You have to watch out for yourself.

I have been eating lowcarb off and on for many years. When Jimmy Moore published the book Keto Clarity in 2014 I started following a keto plan which I have been doing pretty much ever since. However, the conventional keto plan has too much fat for me (I love fat but was eating way too much to lose weight) and my weight stalled for years. Earlier this year I switched to the P:E plan which is lower in fat and I still measure my ratios of Protein:Energy (fat + net carbs) although I am strictly carnivore at the moment.

Day 5 full keto. keeping carbs under 20 and in 5 days I dropped off 8lb of fluid/ fat. I started seeing the ketone on strip on day two (I was excited since I had read for a lot of people it could take longer depending on previous diet. I was pretty clean eater)
when I first came back to spark i was at 217, first week dropped 7lb of fluid since I started tracking my water in take. the scale stayed at 210 for the following I think like 4 ish weeks, which is when I realize I needed to change something more..

KETO FOR THE WIN! ! !

SO far the swap has been pretty good.. I Am so excited for all the benefits keto eating can give

I am curious,
how long have you all been eating keto?
How many carbs do you aim for in a day?
How many protein?
Dr Boz Formula suggest taking your ideal body weight _______ then divide that number
your ideal divided by 2.2 = highest number of protein gram you should max at in a day

The food wheel ratio has been a hugh help to make sure my fat is largest part of pie

MOMTOMONKEYS2,
as I remember it ... you were working hard to reach 135. If you gained 10, 4 of which you think is water weight, and you ticker says 136.2 right now ... were you down to around 125 ?

Gring - hitting your low weight is great news and I know it feels amazing too! I’m glad you’ve found your sweet spot with carnivore. Tell me what you’ve been eating/ making? You said lower fat? So more white meat? I find it fascinating.
It will be nice if we could get back to life where we live with COVID like we have all our other germs... then you could use your gym!
