Hi everyone! We are back home from our quick trip to Pennsylvania for the memorial service. The airports were very crowded, but everyone was masked (mostly in a compliant manner) and no one was making a fuss.

But I find air travel increasingly difficult and spending 2 out of 3 days in airports or on planes to be hard. We followed the guidance from the TSA that we should allow extra time to clear security and arrived the recommended 3 hours before our flight. Since our flight was at 9:30 am, that meant arriving at 6:30 am, ugh! We cleared security in less than 30 minutes. LOL

Same coming back. We were in the airport by noon for a 3:00 pm flight and again cleared security in 30 minutes, but that gave us time for a leisurely lunch and didn't require a 4:00 am wake up.

Since I am vaccinated, I felt reasonably safe on the trip. But I found myself thinking about the unvaccinated. It really is impossible to socially distance yourself in a crowded gate area or on a plane. All of our flights were full. Hopefully the masking will help mitigate the risk.

I will be sorry to lose contact with the group, especially those who have been around for the past 10 years. I am not on Facebook and have no plans to join now. I really don't see an alternative to the type of social interaction that Sparkpeople provided. Maybe Facebook groups will do that.

Jean, you I can keep an eye on in Goodreads, LOL.

Which reminds me, I do maintain a profile on Goodreads. Obviously, this has nothing to do weight loss or exercise, but should anyone want to be in touch, they can reach me there.

Thanks for the history June, of the Name Rose of Sharon. I will have to look around for that book and check it out. I also like the name Rose of Sharon much better. Mom told me years ago, it means pretty flower, in Indian..

I did a fun Cardio this morning followed by another 13.12 mile run. Started early to beat the heat. Was it humid.. So far I have done either 3 or 4 Half Marathons in a row and feeling pretty good. I have been mostly running with fewer walk breaks. Just running by feel right now. I try to plan the walk going uphill and also that is when I hydrate..

Wishing all a fabulous weekend!

Safe travels Catherine. Lots of longevity genes in your family!! In this case your DH's, but still your family. Nice that the family could gather on such a milestone of her birth, 100 years !!

Sharon, Rose of Sharon, such a lovely flower and a lovely name. In The Grapes of Wrath one of the Joads was named Rose of Sharon and they shortened to Rosasharn. My mom used to remark the original name was so beautiful, too bad they shortened it, she didn't like the sound of the nickname.

Hello everyone. We are taking our first airplane trip since 2019, heading to Pennsylvania for DH's mom's memorial service (she died last January). Saturday, June 12, would have been her 100th birthday.

Happy Friday All!

Getting ready to start some Cardio and Strength today and Saturday, plan to run 13.10 miles again, weather permitting. We have been getting a lot of rain.

Was able to fertilize my garden after my run yesterday before the rains came in. I have been doing a lot of landscaping work in the front yard and plan to work now on the side of house. It is so overgrown right now with beautiful Rose of Sharon Trees. I dug a large one out and potted it until I figure out where I want to relocate it. They are just growing wild out there. So beautiful. Here is a picture of one of the first blooms this year,

Interesting. Thanks for sharing Catharine.. I did sign up for the Spark360 and will wait to see what it will be like . WOW, I just saw your Spark America is the free one. I thought I saw Spark360 had a free version?

Some of my longtime Spark Friends are on My Fitness Pal. I signed up for it back in 2014 and never used it because of all the time I spent adding my recipes and foods to Spark. Well, I am now using it for my food tracking in addition to Spark People getting use to it. I am not sure how to transfer over my recipes though. It is much easier than I remember finding my foods etc.

If any of you are using my fitness pal please friend me. I am using my Spark name sunshineyourway. I am working on figuring it out but I saw you can create a private group/team there too.

Sharon, from what I'm reading on one of the Leader boards, Spark360 is their Corporate program, i.e. not free. The free platform is Spark America (which has actually been around for a long time). That platform links in under the covers to some of the Spark360 technology.

Here's what Coach Jen just posted in response to questions.

"Spark360 is the name of our company wellness offering and SparkAmerica is our community movement--they both use the same tech platform. This is how we're able to still have a free offering for people to use and we'll continue adding to this platform as mentioned like community features and more, and the reason you're seeing Spark360 in the URL.

We haven't fully developed what that community will look like yet. I think it will be more like message boards to start, but could lead to more from there."

One of the coaches has also said that there is no food tracking tool there (yet).

I inferred from Sparkguy's blog, that while he clearly would to see community features, developing those is far, far down the road.

June, I am so sad that Canada is not included. I'm not on Facebook, so that's not an option for me, and I'm not sure I trust Google, either. You know, Spark owns everything published on its site. I'm sure that Google would be the same. Who know what they would do with it. And I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist. Just too many years in high tech.

Hi Team !!

I am sad about the Sparkpeople wind down. As a Canadian, that means no more Spark in any form. Some teams are creating other teams on FaceBook and Google.

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_arti
cles.asp?id=2659

Chia seeds, I love them and their stellar bowel moving qualities. They are super food nutritious for quality protein, fat, energy, fibre, anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins... They are a bit expensive. Pre-Columbus Mexicans grew them and ate them as a staple, third behind corn and beans and ahead of amaranth.

Jean, my DS and DDIL looked at some houses in Edmonds, it is about an hour from downtown Seattle and a nice neighbourhood. They ended up buying in West Seattle which is a little closer to where they work. Edmonds is closer to the Canadian border and to visit them, we don't have to go through down town Seattle as we do to go to West Seattle. Every time they looked at a house in Edmonds, DH was hoping that one would be the one.

Catherine, that is a long healing curve, you are taking good and careful care of yourself, way to go.

Sharon, I love hearing of your running workouts. I am one month into starting up again and I just love running.

Thank you. I was able to log my food intake later this morning.

Also a friend shared this link where we can create our new account with our spark people name. That is about all you can do on it until August I believe.

Hi Sharon, I was just able to log my breakfast on the food tracker. I've been following a thread in one of the team leader groups, and it sounds like the system was overwhelmed this morning by more than the usual number of people logging in to copy blogs and personal data, etc. There were complaints about numerous things not working. I don't think it's been intentionally shut down.

In fact, I just saw a comment from Spark_Coach_Jen that "Things not working this morning was just bad timing for a temporary glitch."

Good Morning! Happy Monday.

I read that article and thought these changes were not going to happen unti August. Well, I tried to add my meals for today in the food tracker and it is not taking it. I walso tried to use the weight tracker for BP, BG, Sleep etc and that would not take.

Do any of you recommend an outside tracker to use? I have been in the habit of recording everything and now will be totally lost. I had all my recipes in there too- I heard that will be gone but I thought we would still have use of the food tracker?

Will we also lose our Spark Friends etc? Is there another way we can connect. Sounds like there will be no longer our teams by August.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Sharon, sorry to be misleading. I didn't suffer burns. It's just that the lesion is a large area without skin, like a burn would be.

Sad news about Sparkpeople.

Thanks Catharine.. I will look into screening. I do have wire fencing and then bird netting on top. The fencing is about 1/2 inch but I think they can squeeze through. I was also told they can dig tunnels under fencing. Seems like I have seen some holes in garden. I did see some solar stakes that are something that can help keep away moles in mice. I may look into that. I am not thrilled with feeding mice poison. I guess they are doing that because trapping them would be too difficult to go under house all the time. But I do have concerns with their droppings getting into my garden and being toxic.. Especially when I spent all this time and money for Organic. And I don't want to kill other wild life.

I had no idea you suffered burns on your legs. I had 2nd -3rd degree burns and it took a long time to heal, no skin grafts. I hope yours does not take too long for your recovery..

Hello everyone!

Jean, the leg is gradually getting better. Thanks for asking. But it is such a slow process. Very frustrating. I think I mentioned that it is on top of the tendon that goes down to the foot. Early on I tried to stay off my feet as much as I could to reduce drainage and irritation and the need for bandage changes. I was concerned about reintroducing infection. That approach did seem to help.

Then I started being more active a couple of months ago, including working out twice a week. And the lesion started bothering me again. Then I discovered an elastic bandage with some compression capabilities (which supposedly helps support tendons and ligaments). I started using that to secure the top dressing and it has really helped my manage the movement of the underlying tendon.

This morning when I got up, the top dressing was still mostly dry. But I am starting to wonder if I'm going to need a skin graft. I know that can happen with large burns. I was told that it could take a year to heal. I haven't gotten to that point yet.

Sharon, I got rid of rats on my garden deck by screening it in. That got rid of raccoons and squirrels, too. I would never put out poison bait. It is an indiscriminate killer. Dogs, cats, "innocent" wildlife will eat it too. Plus it is a horrible way to die, slowly bleeding to death internally. Before I screened the deck, I did catch one rat in a "haveaheart" trap and escorted him (her?) out of town.

But raccoons were always my biggest nemesis. I once came out to a find that a racoon had picked most of my almost ripe tomatoes, taken one bite, then thrown them on the ground.

I really miss having a pool. I agree, it is so refreshing, especially after a long walk or run.

Jean, enjoy your time out shopping in a real store other than grocery.

I just got back from grocery shopping. My coffee maker died yesterday after brewing only 1.5 cups. Also went to Lowes to get more edging stone and Cedar Mulch. I am working on landscaping the front yard.

Yesterday I saw a rat or mouse on the outside of my organic garden hiding under the lemon balm. Oh my. We have had a problem with them under the crawl space. I am just hoping they are not getting in my garden. Darn, that reminds me, I forgot to buy some mint to plant. Any other ideas to keep them out organically. Pest company has poison food for them to eat. I just don't want any of that to get in my Organic garden. I read that with droppings it can.

LOL - such interesting topics we are discussing - LOL

Catherine: How is the sore on your leg? foot? If you mentioned this recently I missed it.

***

Walked a little over 6.3 miles today. Beautiful. Got in our pool for the first time in 2021. I am just not much of a pool person, but it is refreshing after a long walk!!

Thinking about going shopping in a store other than a grocery store, like for shoes and clothing. Now that will also be a first in a very long time.

Hope all of you are having a good weekend!!

WOW! That is a lot of rain. We had some rain too but we were in a draught for so long, we need to make up for it.

I got the Psyllium Powder at Walmart in the vitamin health area. Non GMO, Kosher Gluten Free. I still need to try it out and see if it works for me..

Ran another 13.12 miles this morning. Got out early before the heat, humidity and very high dew point. 71 degrees and 96% humidity around 7 am. It got hot later.

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a good holiday / end of the month. It is suddenly raining like crazy here. We've gone from drought warnings to flash flood warnings in the course of just a few weeks. We had a lot of rain the week before we left for Oklahoma, then found 3 inches in our rain gauge when we got back home. In the two days we've been back, we've recorded another 2.5 inches. Wow.

One of the nice side effects is that temps have been about 10 degrees lower than normal. It was 66 overnight and in the 70s for highs. It will be back in the low 80s in a few days, but normally we're looking at 90s in June. Of course, we must deal with high humidity. And lots of mosquitoes.

That's interesting. I've never heard of that use for Psyllium.

I will have to try the Chia seeds. I do have a KETO cereal that maybe I can try every other day with that. I was wondering about Psyllium. I bought some powdered to use in a recipe to make burrito wraps. It has been sitting in the refrigerator for months now. Maybe I should take the time t try making it. Keto products are so expensive and usually the wraps you can buy are more of a small to medium size.

Hi Sharon, when you say you eliminated fiber, are you referring to fiber supplements? I used to take Psyllium capsules, but when I was seeing the GI doc, he told me to stop, that Psyllium can ferment in the gut. I read up on this and found that there was disagreement in the literature, but I took his advice.

My problems with gas didn't seem as pinpointed as yours, i.e. I don't think I have any particular food sensitivities, but some foods definitely are less easily digested. When I complained to the GI doc that I was producing excess gas, he told me that I probably wasn't, actually. My system just wasn't handling it properly. A normally functioning gut absorbs most of the gas it produces and excretes the rest unnoticeably, or so he claimed.

Since I started eating chia seeds, my "noticeable" gas has been greatly reduced, I think because it hydrates the stool, which the GI doc said helps with absorption. He wanted me to take Miralax (polyethylene glycol) for this purpose, but in my stubborn way, I wanted to find a food source if possible. I remembered chia seeds from my research into diets for runners.

Again, I don't have food sensitivities, so my experience may not be applicable to yours, but since chia seeds are a food source with many nutritional benefits, it might be worth looking into. According to the following article, "The fiber in chia seeds is mainly soluble fiber and mucilage . . . These fibers may help to lower LDL cholesterol and slow down digestion, which can prevent blood sugar spikes after eating a meal and promote a feeling of fullness."

Two tablespoons of chia seeds (1 ounce or 28 grams) contain about 140 calories, 4 grams of protein, 11 grams of fiber, 7 grams of unsaturated fat, 18% RDA for calcium, and trace minerals including zinc and copper. They are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that cannot be made by the body.

I usually add 1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) to my morning cereal or fruit smoothie.

Catharine, I have not tried the Fodmap Diet. I need to. I have to watch my sugars-carbs. I consider myself prediabetic and have family history of diabetes. I usually will eat whole fruits that are low glycemic as not to raise Blood Glucose. Now, I will eat watermelon when in season. I eat berries a lot and many low glycemic veggies. My fiber seems to be within range. I gained a lot of weight eating more fruits years ago and going low fat diet did not work for me. Felt like the Pillsbury dough boy back then. Low carb is the only thing that has worked for me and now will be maintaining 41 lb. weight loss for almost 7 years. It took 2 years to lose it. I do take my blood sugar reading every morning. Since eliminating the Fiber it seems to be getting back to normal range. Prior to, I was always over 100 BG first thing in the morning.

I will look more into that diet. I have a lot of gas after eating certain foods. I ate some almonds as a snack yesterday afternoon and was so surprised how my body reacted. I notice I also react to Egg plant and Avocado so I stopped eating those.

I think there is a food sensitivity test and would be interested in that. I need to schedule my follow up appointment. I wanted to allow enough time to see results.

Hi Sharon, I make my own. I have a Vitamix blender which can handle anything.

Did you do the Fodmap elimination diet? Some fruits are on that list to be avoided if you are sensitive to certain short-chain carbohydrates. But many fruits are low Fodmap, for example, most citrus and melons, grapes, bananas, blueberries, strawberries.

Or is your concern about sugar related to your Keto diet? I'm not very knowledgeable about those requirements, but of course the sugar in fruit is primarily fructose, not sucrose. And it comes packaged in a lot of fiber. I think it is the fiber that my system liked. Have you ever tried chia seeds? Not fiber, but with many of the benefits. And high in protein.

Good Morning All! Happy Tuesday.

I woke too early this morning. Just loving the cooler temps. I hope to get out running before 8 am. I plan to do 2, 5K's again. This is the week for a virtual 5K with my RW Group on FB. I predicted my time to be 34:06. Whoever is closet to their predicted time wins.. Slowing it down now for summertime running in the heat and humidity.

Thanks Catharine. So far I have had the one virtual meeting with nutritionist. I do plan to make another appointment. Removing the Fiber has really helped but I have been hesitant still about removing the IBGard and FDGard. Maybe what I will do is cut down on it and see how that goes. I have also been taking the charcoal caps, which really seem to help with ACV. She told me I should schedule follow up around 6-4, which I will do.

I am happy you have had great results. I remember you mentioned since you have been doing fruit smoothies, that it helped you. Do you make up your own or do you have something you buy. I have hesitated on that thinking about all the sugar in fruit. I have been using Dr. Mercola's fruit that I add to my Organic homemade lemonade. I do mix a little organic orange juice and an antioxidant juice which is yummy. I use organic Stevia by NOW to sweeten the lemonade. I use monk fruit for my coffee.

have a safe trip back home.

Shsron, you are doing great! Are you still consulting your nutritionist and has her advice been helpful?

I'm happy to report that, over time, I have needed less and less of the peppermint capsules and fennel seeds. A few weeks ago I stopped taking them entirely. I can't really explain it but my system just seems to have calmed down. The one thing I'm still taking, well in this case eating, is chia seeds. They draw fluid into the gut, but gently.

We are leaving for home tomorrow. One of our primary objectives with this trip was to help with yard work. There is still a lot of major pruning needed because of the effects of the polar vortex early in the year. Of the five days available to work, it rained all day on two of them. We made progress in the remaining three days, but couldn't get everything done. Hopefully we have convinced Mother to hire someone to finish and to shred all the trimmings. It is too much for her (but remember my early comments about her reluctance to spend money.) Seeing how much work it was for us convinced her, I think.

Good Afternoon All.

I hope everyone is have a Wonderful, Safe, Memorial Day. emoticon

I have been pretty lazy after my morning workouts.. Saturday I ran another Half Marathon. My time was much better with the first one so will keep that time to enter virtual finishing time.

I need to do some cleaning in downstairs bathroom. Installer for new toilet will be here Tuesday morning.. And then some work in my kitchen..

So thankful the temps cooled down some. My Saturday run was so hot and humid starting out.

June, during the week, I run 2- 5K's back to back.. I am trying to improve my 5K time. I am on a Runners World FB group and we have been doing virtual races. So this week is a race week. My training program usually has a 5.5-6 mile run during the week, so I decided to break it up for the 2, 5k's.

Catharine, wishing you the best during this transition for your mom. Sounds like she won't have any problems adjusting and a great time to be selling. RE in NC is very hot too. We also have had a few large corporations move to the area which has helped in addition to the housing boom. I really feel sorry for 1st time homebuyers right now. I use to work for homebuilder in FL- Tampa, Sarasota and Bradenton during the housing boom back in the early 2000's when housing prices almost tripled in price and of coarse when the bubble broke.

Yikes, long term care/ living is quite expensive..

Thanks, Jean. Fortunately, Stillwater being a small town, she already has (long time) friends at the Legacy Village and more with plans to move there eventually. There aren't many options if you don't want to move to one of the cities. Nor will she be cut off from her existing circle of younger friends. They already pick her up for socializing and will continue to do so.

If anything, her social life will expand since she will be around to more people on a daily basis. And she makes friends easily. So I don't expect that to be a problem. Not wanting to leave her friends is a big part of why we are 450 miles apart. And I don't blame her. She would be lost and totally out of her comfort zone in a big city like Austin. She can drive safely in Stillwater, but no way could she go out on her own in Austin.

June, I'm glad things worked out for your kids. I know you are eager to see them. Hope it can be soon.

My mother is benefitting from this real estate bubble. But evidently she benefits as well from living in a desirable neighborhood. There are good schools (she lives just up the street from a middle school) and large lots (hers is 3/4 of an acre). This offsets the negatives of an older house which, while in reasonably good condition, definitely needs updating.

This subdivision has a very interesting history. The parcel of land was acquired by the original owners via the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 (the starting line was just outside of Stillwater). This family built a house in the middle of this parcel, and the descendant who eventually developed the land still lived there at the time my parents built their house. He took a personal interest in how the parcel was subdivided, insisted on large lots, planted lots of trees, and set a minimum size for for houses built there (although by today's standards, not that big).

Since the parcel wasn't developed by a builder, every house is different. Nothing like today's subdivisions.

Here's a bit about the land run if you've never heard of it.

When my mom went into a home that provided the extra care she needed, we paid monthly. One of my retired friends has the buy into the ownership model, but also has minimal medical or living task assistance. I think the monthly option is much better. Tying up so much capital doesn't make sense. Speaking of seller's markets these days, I am glad your mom will benefit from that. On the other end, my son and his wife just bought their first house, wow, it was quite a ride. They spent 3 months looking at homes and placing bids. Right now almost all the homes in Seattle are selling for a lot over list price. They experienced just about every scenario - bidding way too low, several times being the second highest bid, sometimes putting in a bid on a dream home just in case and being in the middle of the pack of bidders, once having the highest bid and the seller taking the second highest bid because that bidder offered cash ... They were getting discouraged, dozens of homes would come weekly on the market, they would pick one and fall in love with it, then they would be disappointed. Last week they successfully bought a home, not by bidding, but by being offered a similar home to one they bid on with the owner wanting to sell it without listing it. They are happy, really like the house and the neighbourhood and the proximity to where they work. While they were in the process, I knew sooner or later they would buy a home, and was so curious as to what they would get. All's well now, they are happy. DH and I will have to wait for the border to open to see it, possibly in June or July.

The Legacy Village is probably closer to what your bridge friends have. There is assisted living and memory care but I don't think they have true nursing home facilities. Certainly there is no option for long term hospitalization.

Mother will pay a monthly rent. It is expensive, but covers pretty much all living expenses involved in room and board, including the dining hall. As originally planned, it was to require a buy in. But the original investors got cold feet, withdrew their financing and forced a bankruptcy. (The facility was about 80% completed at that point.) It took well over a year to sort that out, find a new buyer, and finish the facility. The new owner converted to the monthly rent model. Everything was finally ready for move in last spring when the Pandemic hit.

I haven't done detailed financial analysis, but I think the monthly rent model is better for Mother. The other model would have tied up most of her capital. As it is, she doesn't have to sell her house before she can move. She can take her time. And since they don't have a medical facility, if the time comes that she needs that, she will have to move. That would have been complicated under the old model. Now she only has to give 30 days notice.

The expense is hard for her, emotionally. She has owned her current house free and clear for decades. She doesn't pay all her living expenses in one check (nor see the value in dollars of her own labor that will now be done by others). She is extremely frugal, as a true child of the depression (she was born one month before the stock market crash in 1929). It is hard for her to spend money.

I keep reminding her that at this point in her life, the right questions are "Can I afford it; Will my money last?" What works best is to remind her that my father worked hard to set up and fund a trust to ensure she would be well taken care of after he was gone. He knew she would live a long time. She is honoring his wishes by spending that money. I certainly don't need her to leave it for me.

Rick's mom was in an independent living community for many years. It also had the "progression" of care and in her last couple of years she needed those - assisted living and then the nursing home part. But, while she was in the independent part - she LOVED it. She had many, many friends and went to dinner every night. She was involved in several groups.

Rick and I have investigated the ones that are close to us. They are very expensive to move into. But maybe down the road at some time.

One bridge playing couple we know just moved into an independent community that does not have the assisted living or nursing home part of the community. But does serve 3 meals every day. I asked them if that is all they do.... get up and get ready to go for breakfast - go home and then it is time for lunch go home and then it is time for dinner.

The best part about this 2nd place is that it has no buy in amount - you simply rent and if you choose to move out they want a 30 day notice. It is pricey though - $$4,000 - 6,000 a month (I think).

Hi again. Lots of excitement today, big storms moving across the state, tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, golf ball sized hail on the way, yikes. We could get my car only half way into Mother's garage since it's a staging area for part of the move. So we rigged up a covering for the part that stuck out. Fortunately, it didn't get tested. The worst weather went around us.

Is Mother excited about the move? Yes and no. She knows that caring for the house and yard is becoming too much for her, especially with my being 450 miles away. She is definitely ready to have someone else cook for her. But the move itself will be stressful. At least she got good news from her realtor. It's a seller's market right now and she lives in a neighborhood popular with buyers.

Your mom sounds amazing Catherine, doing well and thinking ahead at 91. Best wishes with the transition. Lots to do with living in the same place for so long.

Jean, hope your hip feels better with rest and care.

Sharon, 2 easy 5ks yesterday? Does that mean two workouts at different times of the day or two timed distances in the same workout? I remember when I was still rowing we sometimes did two workouts at different times of the day, but haven't done that with running.

Jean, I hope your right hip feels better soon.

Catharine, what a nice option for your mom. Sounds like a nice place. Is she excited about the move?

Hi Jean, sorry to hear about the hip. It's hard to cut a break sometimes, isn't it?

My mother is moving to the Legacy Village, a new retirement community in Stillwater. She is 91 and still in a house on her own. She will have her own apartment, but there is the option of assisted living and other services if they become necessary. Her last move was approximately 55 years ago into her current home.

Sounds like a great plan Catherine. Where is your mother moving?

All is going along fairly well in my world. Exception: The other day when I did the stair stepper for 20 minutes so I could get some cardio in..... my poor right hip..... I thought it might irritate my knees, nope, my right hip. Maybe I should have started with 10 minutes. LOL

Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone. We are leaving for another week in Oklahoma. My mother has committed to a July 1 move. This week was supposed to be yard work week, but rain is forecast for most days. Should be interesting. I'm going to help Mother go through clothes, linens, housewares. My role is to immediately cart most things to Good Will.

Good Morning!

Jean, great job. I use t have a stair stepper when living in FL and that really does get the hrt up. Enjoy the nicer weather while you can..

Got out for 2- easy 5K's yesterday. I am working on trying to pick up my pace some. I remember the days I use to run it in about 27:00 back in 2017, now more like 33:00. I will be happy if I can get it down to below 30:00. Not expecting that during the Summer months though. Getting ready for some cardio and yoga. Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Good Morning Runners and "wannabe" runners again!

Another great Florida May morning! Since walking just does not get my heart rate pumping very much, I decided to spend 20 minutes stair stepping this morning before walking. I gotta tell you, that worked!!! LOL

Thanks All. Poor sweet Pete. It is so quiet in the house now and even Cleo my Cockatoo is adjusting. They always talked with one another.

June, I have only been running 3 days a week for quite some time now. Gives my body time to recover. Sounds like you are doing great on your come back. Jean, sounds like you had a lovely time. Catharine, I had no idea Jeff G. had two heart attacks. Oh my.

I ran 10 miles this morning. It was beautiful outdoors..

Good Morning!!

Sharon: Congratulations on completing your virtual HM and also sorry about losing Pete.

Running: I have had such easy run-walk intervals for such a long time. And last year feeling so terrible for so long, I just was in a continual state of restart. But those intervals were 15:45. So not much running. My knee is doing much better, and because thee issue is related to the IT band, been rolling that band in hopes I can do some running again even if it is minimal.

Last Sunday and Monday: We drove to Naples, FL to see my husband's son and his wife who were vacationing there. We had a very good time with them. They both looked very healthy and happy (mid 50s). Also they have A LOT of energy!!! They brought paddle boards with them and Monday we spent some time at the beach and my step-son and I did venture out on the ocean (the very calm ocean) on paddle boards. It was great fun!!

Have a fantastic day everyone!

When I trained for (and ran) my first marathon (February 2010, wow), all the recommended ratios had 1 minute walk breaks. I used 2/1.

Then Jeff came to town to meet with our local Galloway group and discussed how he was experimenting with ratios that fit within one minute. We were all running a 10K after our meeting and he said that he was going to use 45/15 for his 3:1 ratio. So I decided to try 40/20 for that race and really liked it. I never went back to the longer times.

No breaks longer than 30 seconds due to re-starting being more difficult makes sense. I used to sometimes run 4 minutes, walk 1 minute on long runs.

30/30 was a favorite of mine, too, although for my really long runs during training (e.g 20+ miles), I often used 20/20 or even 15/15. Sounds like it would be choppy, but it was easy to fall into the rhythm and my legs didn't have as much chance to tighten up during the walk or fatigue during the run.

I made note of the following comment from Jeff back then:

Compared to earlier versions of the run-walk-run ratio, you will note that there are no longer any walk breaks longer than 30 seconds. This is because it was discovered with longer walk breaks of 45 sec. or 1 minute, majority of the benefit was derived during the first 30 seconds of the walk break... and that as runs became longer, it was harder and harder to re-start the legs for the run portion with the longer walk breaks.

Being back into running for me means trying to run 3 times a week to build back up my fitness, cardio and muscles, bones and joints. And that means following a schedule and even though it is fun, sometimes not feeling like running or forgetting that day was a run day. As long as I have a day off between runs, I don't think about it, but it is better to stick to a regular plan. My intervals are short right now, 30 seconds run : 30 seconds walk. When I am by myself, I just count 45 steps running and 30 steps walking, but if I run with my friend, I get distracted, so I found my trusty Jeff Galloway timer.

Yes, that struck me too. I had heard only about the original heart attack. I was under the impression that he had had his stents put in at that time but it must have been after the second, more serious event.

I was initially surprised at the number of stents he received, given his description of the first heart attack which sounded relatively mild as heart attacks go. He was so, so fortunate to have been in a medical facility when the second event occurred.

Re Jeff, he says

" In spite of a superior level of fitness for my age, no family history of serious CV issues, and very healthy nutrition (via my wife Barb), I could have died.

Trying to make sense of this was frustrating and troublesome. If my regular gentle aerobic workouts totaling more than 2.5 hours a day could not protect me - what level of exercise could? "

I hope he shares with us. I agree we need gentler workouts as we get older, and he is doing that. And eating healthy too. I am wondering what is in his 2.5 hours per day, if it is only aerobic. He is kind of famous for not advocating stretching or strength training.

Also, I just realized, he had 2 cardio events, not just one, within a few days of each other.

Sharon, so sorry you lost your sweet Pete. Did you have him from when he was a baby? Way to go, running your virtual HM !!

Jean, I am looking forward to seeing more family, right now in our province, we just had a strong surge a few weeks ago which was worse than the biggest surge last year, partly because last year the spread came late to our province and our health authorities started protocols before it got going. Last spring, the seniors were at most risk, there were devastating outbreaks in senior homes. Now most of the seniors are vaccinated as well as the other at-risk populations like the indigenous people, the immune compromised, etc and the vaccinations are going down the population by age and the young people, the under 40s, are getting sick and hospitalized due to their carelessness in socializing and being fed up with the rules plus they aren't vaccinated yet plus they are contracting the variants. So our province is still clamping down, and it is showing results, in the last few weeks the infection and hospitalization rates are going down and of course there are more vaccinations getting done too. If things continue, we should open up more next month, and through the summer, aided also by less spread in sunny warm dry weather.

Update from Jeff, via his newsletter:

I Have A Second Chance To Help People!

A month ago, my heart stopped, and my life could have been over. Fortunately I was in the Cardiac unit of Piedmont Hospital - a landmark I had run past dozens of times on the Peachtree Road Race course where my strong 25 year old heart in 1970 had propelled me to first place.

But as a 75 year old, I had suffered a heart attack a few days before and was getting checked out. In spite of a superior level of fitness for my age, no family history of serious CV issues, and very healthy nutrition (via my wife Barb), I could have died.

Trying to make sense of this was frustrating and troublesome. If my regular gentle aerobic workouts totaling more than 2.5 hours a day could not protect me - what level of exercise could?

Then, a wonderful infusion of support began: thousands of cards, letters, emails, texts - wishing me well. Quite a number of these had empowering stories about how my advice had helped in different ways - including coming back from a cardiovascular event.

Because there are so many variables and no guaranteed answers, I found that I needed to go back to the basics--what I really wanted to get out of nutrition, exercise - and most of all - my life.

The support that has come from our runners and walkers is uplifting and brings me back to the powerful connections we have through exercise!

So, every day I affirm the various joys in my life by hugging Barb, by focusing on the revival of sunrise, by walking for 1000 steps every hour, and by appreciating each person who comes to me with a question. I look on these consultations as the opportunity to promote the increase in energy and empowerment received from every minute of exercise.

I am looking forward to being able to help improve life quality for a long time.

-JEFF

So sorry to hear about Pete. 35 years is big hole to fill. One of my cats lived to 21, but that was way beyond the typical life span of a cat.

Good Morning All. Had been MIA. Will need to catch up with everyone later today.

My sweet Pete the Parrot passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon. He was around 35 years old with a life span of 50. I am still in disbelief. It all happened so fast. The next morning I ran my virtual HM Mike to Mike, based out of Ft. Bragg. This is a big time race but due to Covid, had gone virtual..

Hope everyone is doing great. Chat later.

Well, the governor of Texas lifted the mask mandate back in March. But major retailers (especially grocery store chains, Walmart, Costco, Target, etc.) kept the mandate in their stores, as did the City of Austin (the state sued Austin but so far their mandate hasn't been overturned). So everywhere I go people are still masked.

However, the CDC ruling will make it pretty difficult for businesses to continue enforcing a mask requirement, IMHO, and already Costco and Walmart have lifted theirs. I expect the others to follow soon, and probably the city, too.

I am of 2 minds about this. My understanding of the reason that the vaccinated were advised to wear masks was primarily that the jury was out as to whether or not we could still be symptomless carriers and put the unvaccinated at risk. The evidence appears to be that we aren't spreaders.

So the vaccinated are probably safe. It's the unvaccinated who are at risk, still, from each other. I'm concerned that they will now be unmotivated to get vaccinated, since they can "fake it." (Anyone out there who believes that the "honor system" will work?)

Crossing my fingers that enough are vaccinated to keep big outbreaks at bay. Our health care workers need a break.

Happy Sunday Morning!

Doing yoga today instead of my longer Sunday walk. Heading out of town this afternoon to visit Rick's son, Rick, and his wife. They are staying about 2 hours away for the week.

Florida has had few mask restrictions for some time. What are your states doing now that CDC announced the lifting of the mask rule for those who have been fully vaccinated?

Have a really good day everyone!

I finished in 5:18, but I remember seeing him finish. As I recall, they let people who needed extra time to start an hour earlier than the official start. It was so hot by the end of the race that I wished I'd joined that group.
