Re: Sparkpoints... there is a difference b/t your total Sparkpoints, which show up on your Sparkpoints page, etc. and the Sparkpoints available for you to send goodies.

If you go to the Sparkgoodies page where you have the option to "give" a goodie, there is a box on the upper lefthand side of the page w/ your available points. It will not be the same as your "total" Sparkpoints amount. In that box, there is a link called "Details". If you click on that, you'll get a breakdown of the total Sparkpoints you've earned, your total SparkGoodie points (if you've ever won those on the wheel), the amount of Sparkpoints you've "spent" on Sparkgoodies, and then the amount of points still available for "spending".

Hope that answered your first question.

As for your second question, what part of your nutrition are you trying to get in check? I've never tracked my Calcium, Vitamin D, or Potassium on here. I stick to the "usual" fats/carbs/protein, and then I've added in fiber & sodium. As you probably read from the previous person's question, issues w/ Potassium levels seem to be a common theme. I'm afraid I can't be of much help w/ this one... but what I do suggest is to contact one of the dieticians here on the site. I've done so in the past, and they have been a tremendous help!

So, where are these Spark points going? I give away many goodies, but they just accumulate. I don't quite understand, is there a difference between the Spark points as "MY Spark Points," and the Spark points I use to give out goodies? I think so...points, lots of them! emoticon

Also, I still have issues with my nutrition and getting it in-check. I have too much Vitamin D, and I am on a Calcium supplement, per my doc. I never get enough potassium eventhough I eat bananas and tangerines galore. Oh my, any ideas?

Sonja, thank you, very helpful. I'm not going to bother to change my fitness minutes. As for the potassium. They have set my levels between 4500 - 6,000.! As for the potassium, I've read the same things you have 1200 - 2500; and more if you're on certain statin medications which zap K out of the blood stream. I think the 3000 range to 3500 is about as high as I've been able to get it. I looked up the meq / mg equivalent of my supplement so I'm counting it correctly.

I understand about the "starvation mode" which most diets
exacerbate - and I like your suggestions of alternating lower and higher calorie days within the 1200 to 1550 range. And even shocking with a little under and over range occasionally. I will do that!

Thanks again for your attentiveness to my questions. I'm adding you as a Sparkfriend. Have a lovely Sunday - and eat an Apple. MMAZZIE says it's Johnny Apple seed Day!

IHL,
Stephanie (aka SCOTISH)

SCOTISH: I will try to help you w/ all your questions...

1. Spark sets an initial goal for you, I believe. But you are able to adjust it at anytime. You probably see your "SparkAmerica" Fitness Minutes in the column on the right side of your screen. (at least I have mine set up to show there) If they are there, you can click on the "goal" number, and adjust it accordingly. The only person it matters to is you... my goal is set at 7,500 and I've done 20,136 so far this year!

2. It is recommended that your calories not be set below 1200 because your body needs that amount to function properly. When you go lower than that, your body will go into "starvation" mode, and start holding onto fat because it feels like it's going into a famine and needs to conserve it for energy. (and that kinda defeats what we're trying to do here!) They put your high end of calories at 1550 so that you have a 350 calorie variance. I'm also set at these same limits. What I've found to help is to once a week, "shock" my body. Either I throw in just one low calorie day (no lower than 1,000 calories... and this is typically on a day that I am not exercising because of the energy demands of a workout) or one higher calorie day (typically around 1800). I also try to vary my calories w/in my variance, trying to eat 1200-1250 one day, and closer to 1500 the next day. This keeps your body "guessing" and prevents it from getting into a "rut".

3. As for your potassium requirements, I've never monitored mine, so I really can't tell you much on it. I'm curious what the dosage is of your potassium pills that you take... are they over the counter (which typically are 99mg) or are they prescription (because these are typically measured in meq's which wouldn't be equivalent to mg)? Also, what is your goal for potassium? I checked it out before I responded to this, and noticed that it automatically set my goal between 3500 and 5000, but when I read the "info" tab on it, the information stated that 2000-2500 mg was sufficient for adults.

Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions, please feel free to post on here again, or contact me by Sparkmail.

Hi, I have a couple of quetions.

1. I or spark, set my fitness goal for this year (what's left of it) for 2,160 minutes. I have already exceeded this goal (my fitness minutes at this point, even with some set-backs are at 4894). How can I change my fitness goal to a more realistic number - or does it matter?

2. My calories goal is 12000 to 1550. I've been stuck at 160 lb for the last 2 or 3 weeks, since I'm not 172 now that I;ve lost 12 lbs - isn't it time to set my menus for a little less food.

3. My potassium requirements are way out of sight. Even checking everything on a given menu and taking two potassium pills / day, I've never even come within 2000 mg of my potassium goal. I've had to just ignore it... but it does bother me a little.

Can you help me out with any of this?

Hope every one is enjoying this program as much as I am ( I AM enjoying the program, especially the consistant the wt. loss and help deciding what and how much to eat each day.) I was one of those who was insatiably hungry. And I'm not so much that way any more.

Well,
Have a great week end everyone,
Until next time.

I feel like the fitness tracker counts my calories burned way too high. Is there any way to put some kind of moderation (low, medium, high) calculator onto the fitness tracker.

Hey,

So the ticker KG vs LB issue is set on your sparkpage defaults. Edit your spark page, and you will be able to change it to LBS. I thought this happened to me because I am Canadian and the system thinks us Canadians only use KG...??? not sure.

Hope that helps,
Cherry

That's okay... in all actuality, my name was supposed to be Sonia, but they goofed up the spelling on my birth certificate so my parents just left it. So, it's kinda funny that you spelled it that way! LoL

Glad I could help!

Thanks, I will. (Especially since it is supposed to be 12 pounds, not 26!!)

[On edit: I think I finally figured it out! Thanks again Sonja - and sorry for spelling your name incorrectly before].

That is strange, because it has definitely converted your "12 kg" into "26 lb" on my side! I would suggest trying to contact the technical support here... hopefully they can help you out. This one is beyond my capability!

Thanks Sonia. Strange, though... my ticker still says 12 kg when I look at it! (Besides, you say 26 pounds, but it should be 12 pounds!!) I still don't know why this isn't working for me...

TATTLETATLEHEART: Looks like you have already figured out the weight ticker & email issue since it now says that you've lost 26 lbs. rather than 12 kg.

As for the weight goal issue, you will receive that message about every 20-25 lbs. or so (maybe even more frequent - I don't remember exactly how often I received it). You're right, when you adjust those goals, it does look like you went over on your calories previously, but you know whether you did or not. Unfortunately, it's the only ways that you can change your goals.

Oh, and another question: since I've lost a bit of weight, I received a message from SparkPeople to revisit the weight section (to change the goals section, I think, because SparkPeople doesn't automatically recalculate calorie needs of lower weight). How do I do that? If I just change the "start weight" on the weight goals, then it looks as though I went over my calorie goals on previous days.

Sorry if this has been answered before...

How can I get my weight tracker icon on my SparkPage and my e-mails to read "pounds" rather than "kilograms"? It SAYS pounds when I set it up on my SparkPage, but as soon as I click "save" it changes to kilograms.

(I have lost 12 POUNDS, not 12 kilograms as it shows below).

BACK4SECONDS: Without actually logging your information on here, I'm not sure how you would track your nutrition on here. As for the points, if you track your number of vegetables & fruits on the nutrition tracker, you can receive your Sparkpoints for tracking nutrition (up to the 5 point max). But as for nutritional values, I'm not aware of any way to track them on here other than logging the food you eat.

is there anyway to manually track your nutrient values without having to log everything? i dont have time to be on here all the time, so to make up for my tracking i still track my cal, fat, carb, and protein in a notebook and make i sure i stay in my sparkpeople range, but i dont write down what im eating...So i do log everyday everymeal, but id liek to know if i can do it on here manually so i cant earn the sparkpoints and it will show what ive done??

Ok, thanks - I found the link (I should have seen it yesterday, but I guess I was just rushed). I hope they get this fixed soon because I can't seem to get a good way to copy the stuff off the website into my Microsoft Office One Note to save for later reading whereas I can copy and paste from the email.

VOGT_SNOWYOWL: You're not doing anything wrong... they are currently having some issues w/ their emails. (I'm not getting mine either) You can still see the daily emails & get your points though... because this occasionally happens, SP has made a link to the daily emails.

In order to reach the link, go to the same page where you signed up for which emails you'd like to receive. (If you don't remember where that is, go to the Sparkpoints page and click the link to "sign up for emails". When you get to that page, at the end of each email description, there's a link to "view today's". You can read them there & claim your points for doing so.

Hopefully they'll have the email issue fixed soon!

Ok, I am just trying to figure out why some of the emails have stopped. I signed up to get all the emails for the daily stuff including exericse, recipe, food showdown, best of, and healthy reflections.

The last set of those emails that I received was on the 14th - and since then it has stopped. I checked my account email preference and they are still checked. I don't know what's going on - and I have no idea who to ask for the answer, since there is no direct contact link. I still have received the SparkPeople Mailer emails that inform me when a new message post has been posted in one of my teams or when a new member has been added - but that's it, I also don't receive the dailySpark emails now.
I know it's only been the 2nd day, but it's confusing.

MOM2SANDM: By boxes, are you referring to the ticker? (I see one on your post already, so not sure if you figured it out or if you're talking about something else)

As for the signatures, when you go to your Sparkpage, and click the "edit" button... down on the bottom right side (clear at the bottom), there's a box that reads "personal signature". It's just above your profile image. Anything you put in that box will show up in your signature on your posts.

EMILYRESQ: I have actually been in this situation myself too. If you already have all the nutritional information and do not need SP to figure it out from the ingredients, you can go to your Nutrition page and under "Add Food", there's a tab on the upper right side for "Enter A Food Not Listed". You can then title the food however you want (I've used "Meatloaf (my recipe)" so that I know it's my own), and enter the nutritional info you already have.

Of course, not using the Nutrition page is always an option, but I sure found it a vital part of my success here. Hope this helps!

I have a lot of recipe books that already have the nutritional information provided. I would like to continue using the recipes rather than the SP menues. I tried entering one recipe and too many of the ingredients didn't exist in the list. Is there a way to just enter the nutritional information of the recipe under "dinner" so I can track it without having to enter all the ingredients of the recipe? Alternatively, what if I don't use the nutrition page at all?
