Well, I officially started my HM training on Sunday with a day of stretching and core work, no cardio. It was more like a day of rest. Monday I did a 3 mile run and strength training. Today was a cross training day so I did Spin class. Tomorrow will be another 3 mile run with strength training. Thursday is a complete day of rest. Friday is cross training and Saturday is my long run, which this week is 4 miles.

This is all new for me. I'm used to doing a lot more which means I'll have to adjust my calories. :( But I don't want to injure myself so I'm sticking to the schedule!

Hi everyone!

Very relaxing day yesterday. It was fairly thundery (a new word) and rainy all day. We never went outside.

Goals for 2011:
1 - even though I don't think I need to, I think I'm going to try to lose about 5 more pounds, just for insurance. ;)
2 - Train for and run at least one HM
3 - Spend more quality time with my kids
4 - Last but definitely not least: spend more time in prayer and Bible study

Happy New Years everybody! My running and weight loss goals for 2011:
Run 3 10Ks
Run 3 5Ks
Train for HM and possibly run one in October
Lose 10 pounds by losing 2 pounds a month

These goals seem reasonable to me and within my reach!

What are YOUR goals for 2011?

I ran with a partner for the 1st time yesterday. I ran with my BIL--who's only 30 and has done a half before so I figured I'd have a hard time keeping up with him, but actually, that didn't happen! We ran 5 miles, and I wanted to do 6, but he was ready to walk! He took me to a really nice trail in their city that goes out into the country and to another tiny town. I loved it! I still think I like running alone better, though, so I can do the pace and distance I want.

Hi Team!

Thanks for the IT band stretch ideas. I will definitely be adding these to my daily stretch routine.

I have never been big on stretching, but I want to keep running... And so, a few minutes of stretching is doable!

I can hardly believe it is almost 2011.

Seabreeze, I have had bad IT band issues myself, one of the main reasons why I backed off of running so much. I think mine was a result of not stretching + overuse. As I said earlier, I haven't had pain in a couple of months, although I will feel a twitch here and there if I'm running too fast or too much.

Since I'm going to be upping my mileage and (hopefully) train for a HM, I bought a foam roller and plan to use it religiously!!

Hi Seabreeze,

I had huge IT issues early in my running. I got the deep hip bend stretch from my PT and it seems to have cured my problem. I stretch just a few minutes before and after each run and include this weird stretch.

Stand with your bad hip to the wall sideways about 2 feet away. Cross the foot of your bad hip over top of your good leg. Lean your whole body into the wall and brace yourself with your hand, placing your weight on the foot of your bad IT band. Your hip toward the wall and hold it until the pain subsides a bit. This smarts like something - but after you add this to your regimen you may see some pain relief.

I found the following video that is similar - though she leans away from the pole versus toward it, but you will get the idea.

Hope it helps!

Hi TEAM!

Leanne: Good job on the "dread"mill run.

Nutrition: I definitely need to get back on track here also. I have been lazy and a bit undisciplined when it comes to eating sugar products.

CTUCCI: WTG on the 11 pace!!!

CRISS: You are right, it is hard to be a runner and a kickboxer and other things as well. I find running takes up a lot of time especially the longer runs.

IT BAND: One of my IT bands has been bothering me for awhile now. Yesterday I ordered a foam roller with hopes that this will help loosen up that tendon. I hear it is fairly painful to use in the beginning. But I am determined to be pain free and injury free.

Today's plan..
.. about 4 miles + walking another 2 or 3.

Sorry I've been MIA! emoticon Besides being super busy with the holidays, Christmas, and everything in between, I've been spending some time thinking of how I want to proceed as far as my fitness goals. Other than a couple of pounds gained during Christmas emoticon , I've lost all the weight I need to lose. So now I want to focus on toning and running! I want to run a HM in October 2011 so I really want to start training for that now. However, it will mean that my other passions - kickboxing and boot camp -- will probably need to take a back seat for awhile. It's just too much impact on my knees. I've been pain free for 2 months now, mainly because I'm not running as much as I used to. I get 2 to 3 miles in a couple of times per week.

But I think I really want to focus on running for awhile. For those of you are did/are training for a HM, what training schedule did you use?? There's so much to chose from!!

It's a relief to hear I am not the only one having crappy runs.. I agree, I need a low carb/low fat reboot. I was considering a detox just to get the system back to zero again. I'm not a huge believer in them, but I have always felt a little bit better after doing one. Probably psychological, but hey - whatever works! LOL

I feel everybody's pain. My run yesterday was very slow and sluggish - I finished it - but it never did feel like a good run! Utah has another cold arctic air storm moving in tonight and tomorrow which means super cold weather again. I can handle the 25-35 range but single digits are just too cold for me! Guess I'll be back in the basement doing aerobics!

I ran today on a snow covered trail - took some tricky footwork but somehow I maintained 11's so not so bad.

Now, if only I could keep 11's all of the way through my next half - that would be something!

I hear you about the eating being off and that affecting runs. I talked with my SIL tonight and we both agreed - time to regroup nutritionally. I have kept the runs, but they dont feel as easy when my stomach feels so full. Even when I am not overdoing in calories, just the change in carbs and fat is making me feel off.

I need a carb free, fat low, few days to just reboot!

With all the rich food AND being sick last week with the stomach flu, it has really put a damper on my running. I headed downstairs to the treadmill yesterday and STRUGGLED through a 25 min run. I can't wait until I am back on track and back up to running what I was before. What a downer!

Hi Team - Happy Holidays!!

I finished a book awhile ago about Nutrition and Sports. It really helped me realize how much I need to eat after a run and during and before for optimal energy.

Now if I could stop eating all the time, I'd lose these last 10 pounds....

I watched Spirit of a Marathon a couple days ago. I don't know if that is in my future. I'll see how the halfs go.

I just want to finish in under 3 hours upright and happy!. That is not all that speedy....

HAVE A BLESSED AND WONDERFUL HOLIDAY EVERYONE!

Hi Saamara -

I learned two things during my training - first, you need to stretch as much as possible, and especially stretch the areas that you have had soreness both before and after. There are great stretches in the Healthy Lifestyle section of Spark People under "fitness." You can just type in hamstring stretches and they will give you several. Experiment and see what works for you.

I found that taking a short little run to get my heart rate up (1/4 mile or less) and then stretching worked better for me then stretching cold. I also found it was super important to stretch after my runs and before I got into my car. I use the car to lean on and stretch my calves and hamstrings, the bumper to pull up my knee, the back of the car to do deep hip dips. I do a couple of yoga moves (sun salutation into downward facing dog and back) and then hit the road. It takes about 5 min and saves me hours of pain.

The next thing is you have to get your runs in and listen to your body. If you start hurting, do not just run through it, instead think about what is happening as you run. Are your feet or toe positions correct (are you pointing your toe to the side instead of straight), are your arms relaxed or shoulders hunched, is your neck relaxed. Are you driving your knees up and forward? I do a full body position inventory as I run. Usually I am finding one little thing is out of whack and if I can fix my positioning, most often the pain goes away pretty fast.

Also, if your body is really aching, perhaps you need a day or two off. They say that you do the most growth as a runner during recovery days. I have found that sometimes I need to remember that my PLAN to run, may not be my body's plan! LOL Often I have skipped a day when I am sore and I come back stronger, faster and with more stamina.

Finally - eat and sleep right. Your body needs energy - so feed it well. Hydrate all of the time, not just when you run. The healthier you are the better your runs can be!

Take care and happy running, happy loving, and happy living.

Cindy

Hi all,

Kansas - my joints did suffer for the quick jump from couch to HM. I had a lot of knee pain and thought several times during those last few weeks of training that I might have to give up my goal. KT Tape was the solution that worked for me, and now I pretty much live with it on. To me, a small price to pay for pain free living. I cannot say that this is the best method for everyone - I have the fortune of having a brother who is a medical doc and a triatholon competitor who looked a my knee and symptoms and helped with diagnosis before I started using this product.

Lea and Corrine- I say take your time and progress at your own pace. There is no ONE SIZE fits all or most in this. It is about your body, your life, and you MUST do what is best for you! I recommend you embrace your own pace and love how far you have come since you first started C25k.

Seabreeze - I know many people share your thought about run/walking; however, I have a different view point. In my mind, the goal is about completing it. If I walk for a mile of a HM I still did the half, right? Heck there were run/walkers out the day I ran that beat me for sure! I say do what is best for your body and be proud of your accomplishments! You know what is right for you and no one should ever tell you that you are a less of a runner! You are DOING it, which is more than most can say.

Happy running, happy loving, happy living!

Cindy

I haven't been doing walking intervals for exactly that reason - I am afraid of "going backwards." I should really reconsider... I haven't run all week; been sick with the stomach flu. With Christmas fast-approaching (and me still not feeling 100%) I likely won't get a run in until Sunday.

Hi Team!

Cindy: Sounds like you DO have a lot going on in your life right now. Congratulations on the HM!

E-coaching. After signing up for the e-coaching on Saturday morning, I received an e-mail with a questionairre on Monday. I was impatient for the first e-mail, but the mail is not a computer generated response, but is processed by staff. After filling out the questionairre Jeff responded within a couple of days with training guidelines to follow and a schedule. Once a week I send in a report and he will respond within a couple of days tweaking etc the training program. He always wants to know about injuries or pain etc.

I am only on week 2 so not a lot of background as yet.

DELPHYNE: How are you feeling today?

RUN-WALK intervals: I agree that these walking segments make me feel not quite like a runner who runs the entire distance. If I continue with this method I will never be able to say I ran the ENTIRE distance. I fluctuate back and forth, but logically for this body, and long term goals this is a better choice. I am still burning a lot of calories. I still do get a good cardio workout. I will be able to run through my 60's (I am 61). I have a lot of respect for all of the runners who do not stop to walk.

I agree that I'd rather run cold than hot! I did 6 miles Saturday...the longest I've run since before Thanksgiving. I'm trying to decide if I want to increase my mileage more than that. When I started C25K I never thought I would run any further than a 5K. Now I'm thinking about a 10K and lots of you are already doing 1/2s. Wow! Do you find that your joints, etc. are taking it ok? I don't do any walking intervals, just running right now.

Hi Corrine! Thanks for the welcome back. I loved the HM but missed my sparkfriends! I was just spread to thin for a while there. It is nice to be back. I also love running and I have decided that even on cold days (today was 27 degrees and very windy) if you dress right, you are only cold for the first 5 mins or so, then you work up quite the nice sweat. I try to remind myself that it sure beats running in those 100 degree days of 90% humidity we had this summer when many of us were just in the early stages of our C25k and first 5ks. Yikes, I will take cold over that stuff!

Welcome back Cindy! I have been wondering how your HM went! emoticon P90X??? It is tough! Good luck!

I ran this evening for the first time since Thanksgiving and I was surprised at how much I missed it and just how good it leaves me feeling. I decided that 31 degrees is not that cold and I'm so glad that I did!

Hi Delphyne!

Do not worry, just do your very best to get those long runs in during your HM training. It is the key. I am going to take a month to just run for fun and start doing P90X every other day. I want to see some toning in places that running does not really target.

I am so excited that all of the Graduate Team members keep sharing what works for them! This is what many of us need to stay focused during the winter months! Together - we inspire each other to stick with it!

We can do this!

Great job, Cindy! I will be visiting your blog here shortly!

Seabreeze - wow... just now seeing your 2011 schedule! :) How is the Galloway coaching going? And how does that work? I'd love to know what e-coaching is all about.

Great advice about the step aerobics, too! I had NO idea!

I've been sick off and on lately, so I'm just running on days I feel OK. I'm getting a bit behind in my HM training. I'm trying really hard not to stress out about it, though.

Hi everyone!

I am finally settled back into a routine after my HM last weekend (check out my blog for a race rundown and lots of pics).

I am focusing back on nutrition and running again as of this morning. I did a quick recovery run, just 25 min and it was a lot harder than I expected. Just last weekend I ran 2 hours and 43 mins. This morning, 25 was not a breeze. Wow. That said, I have an eye on another HM at the end of April - and I think I will sign up right after the holiday. Ocean City MD on April 30th if anyone else lives in this area and is interested! It would be so much fun to meet up with Spark Friends at a race!

My goal is to now tackle those last 15 pounds, thought I am focusing a bit less on that number than originally I thought. I guess I gained some muscle and I am wearing size 8 jeans now. I do not want to go much smaller than a 6, so now it is about sculpting and toning more than a number on the scale. I am starting to feel comfortable with my body than I ever recall being.

I am hoping to reboot my Spark energy. Thanks all for your patience as I made my way through the race, the last weeks of my grad school semester, internship and business travel. I was a bit spread too thin.

Happy Holidays all - I missed you!

Cindy

Hey team...

I game myself a Christmas gift is the form of...signing up for 6 months of e-coaching with Jeff Galloway (about 300.00). One week in so far!!!

And so the first week of coaching I hardly ran at all because of this calf issue. But yesterday I tried running and it did not hurt at all, so very happy about that!!!!

Wow SeaBreeze! I am very impressed with your 2011 goals. I just received my Jeff Galloway books and can't wait to get started reading them. You really inspire me to want to try harder!

Hi Team,

LISAINMS: Good luck on that HM plan, sounds like waiting until you are better prepared is a great idea.

I have several HMs planned in 2011 (see signature list) and a couple of other races.

WEIGHT: Frustrating....struggling with these last 10 pounds. Eating too much too often will not help.

Kansas, we have similar goals for December. It's a difficult month to lose weight so I'll be happy if I can maintain.

That is awesome you are working towards a HM so soon. I'm too scared! I haven't run a 10K yet and feel like when I am comfortable with that I will start training for a half. I'm going to way behind the rest of you - I should probably get over my fears and just go for it!

Thanks Lisa. I think having my next race planned is what keeps me pushing. In thinking more about the Half in 3 weeks... not going to do it. That is too long of a distance for me right now even to walk/run and I don't want to risk an injury. I'll save my entry fee and keep building. There's another half I can be better prepared for in March with a 4hr limit so I wouldn't be so stressed about how much to run. With 3 months to prepare I hope to run most of that one.

Me too... I blinked and half of December is gone! I graduated from C25K before Thanksgiving. My December goal was to be able to run 5 mi by 12/31. I'm at 5.5 mi now so I am happy with my progress and maybe I will make 10K by New Year's. I was planning to do a 10K in Jan, but I'm really tempted to do the MS Blues (Half) Marathon instead (in 3 weeks). I was going to wait until 2012 when I could run it, but this would be a good way to see what it is like to go that distance (and enjoy the HM experience). There is a time limit of 3.5 hours which I should be able to finish at that 16 min pace. My 5K race pace is 10, long slow runs are 12.5 and my walk pace is 15. But 13 miles is a long way, LOL. What would y'all do?

CrissyCurry where are you in MS? I'm in Vicksburg.

Hi everyone! I just realized I haven't visited this thread once in December!!! Wow...busy times! It was good to catch up with everyone. I have been getting my outdoor runs in 3 times a week although they have all been only 3-4 miles. I hope to do a longer run on Saturday. So far the cold has been manageable.

SEABREEZE, I'm so sorry you hurt yourself...hope things are better soon.

My goals for the month are to keep running 3 times a week and to maintain my weight until Janurary, when I hope to get going to lose the last 8-10 pounds.

That's good to know about step aerobics! I used to do them all the time but haven't for years. I guess this is not the time to start. I ordered three of Jeff Galloway's book and can't wait to get them!

I don't know the answer to this for everyone.

But I am trying to follow the Galloway run-walk method and in his books he says he has seen A LOT of injuries from step aerobics for runners. It has something to do with over stretching (which I did) the calf muscles, as these muscles become very tight on runners.

That is all I know, so I guess I knew better....but did not think 6 minutes was a big deal.

I was WRONG!!!!

Whoah! Whoah! Is step aerobics bad for runners? I was just about pull out my step and do some to get some variety since I'm stuck indoors.

I hope you heal fast and if anyone else has heard the same about step let me know, please.

Hi TEAM!

Weather: Definitely COLD outside. Suppose to warm up in my area next week (low 60's most days).

I am not running as much either because.....

SATURDAY, in order to get a handle on knowing what my max HR is, I did a step aerobic test 2 times. I had heard that doing step aerobics can be bad for runners, but I thought, it is only a 6 minute test.

Well, I strained/injured/tore my calf muscle to the point that walking is very difficult.

I have been icing it A LOT and NOT doing anything that will aggravate it further. I looked it up and these injuries, depending on severity can take 2 weeks to 6 months to heal.

Good news...it feels much better today, but still very sore, especially when calf muscle is lengthened at all.

Yesterday...
...walked about 20 minutes VERY, VERY slow.

Today...
...planning a little longer slow walk.

Running on the weekends is a good idea. I thought I was just going to have to be done for the winter. I have been doing aerobic dvd's but really have missed running!
