You beat me, Corrine. I only went 2.97 miles & it took me 35 minutes!
My goal is still to get to a 30 min 5k by the end of the summer.

I was able to get out and run today. I ran 4.1 miles - not as much as the rest of you - but I loved it and it was great to just get out and run!!

I found out for sure I can't do the really long runs on the treadmill. It's not because it's so dreadfully boring, but because there are too many people in my house that need me. I have to run - far away - to run far away. :)

did 6.8 on Sunday after being down for the count for 5 days due to illness....ran an average 11.03! I will take it gladly. Not a bad bounce back.

Hope you are all having great days

Crissy, sounds like you are doing the right thing by taking it slow with the running & concentrating on other areas. That problem is going to heal for sure. The taping sounds like a good idea.

Hubby & I ran Saturday. It was cold, windy, & wet but he made me get out there anyways. Today it was dark & wet but the temps were around 54 so it felt great!

Hi Team!

Crissy: I've heard other runners talk about taping their knee when running. Have you ever looked into that?

Me... wanna cover 11.5 miles today..some running...some of it walking! Suppose to be beautiful!

Seabreeze, hope you feel better soon!! Have fun on your 10 miles. I'm jealous! emoticon

Thanks again for the support, encouragement, and advice!! I really do appreciate it!!

Saturday, I did 30 minutes on a stationary bike, 15 on the elliptical and then some upper body and core strength training. Nothing bothered me at all. Sunday morning, I tried a slow 3 miles. The first 2 miles were fine but after that, my leg started bothering me a little bit. :( I don't know how to explain the pain. It's not really my knee. It feels like a muscle that runs from the outside of my knee to my shin? This morning I'm just going to bike and do the elliptical again, with some strength training and try again on Tuesday or Wednesday.

And to make matters worse, my husband's shin is bothering him so he's taking off the rest of the week. I guess I should've waited before signing up for this half!!!

Seabreeze and Pink: Thanks for the info. on the foam roller. I think I should try that. My hip and knee pain is always there...never terrible...but just always there. I'm also going to try to get fitted for new running shoes and see if that helps.

Seabreeze: I'm sorry you're feeling down about your virtual racing team. You are such a good contributor to this team; I'm sure you're an excellent leader of that one.

Chrissy: Sorry you're having pain again. I feel sure you'll hit on the right combo of workouts that allows you to keep running. Hang in there!

League: If you got on Highway 81 and drove straight south to Kansas from Winnipeg, you'd be at my house! I've been to Winnipeg once and thought it was really nice.

Hi Chrissy! So sorry about the knee pain - I got that during my first HM training. I have done ok so far this time but a long way to go. Here is my plan and so far so good.

1. KT tape - yup - by the last 2 weeks of my HM training in Nov and Dec I was wearing it full time

2. I bought these expensive but awesome CWX pants www.cw-x.com They help so much that I just bought the 3/4 length for the warmer weather

3. ice - after every run over 5 miles and even some shorter ones when I know I was pushing the speed - ice that knee - even when it doesnt hurt

4. REST days - i have at least 2 full rest, no kidding rest days

5. When it hurts at all, I immediately slow down and think about all of the biomechanics. Is my toe pointing forward or rolling out? Am I driving with my lower leg or my hips and quads? Did I stretch enough can I stretch some more? Am I leaning forward or too much upright? etc

6. - remind myself that I do not have to come in first, I do not have to beat anyone, it is all about me - and that is the joy of it. When it isn't fun then I am taking away from the thrill of healthy living and that defeats the purpose...so...sometimes just go slow and enjoy the scenery. Love running for the love of it.

:-)

Take good care of you

Hi Team!

Pink: Yep, that foam roller can sure hurt the first few times. Now that I am had mine several weeks it doesn't hurt at all - just keeps those muscles free from accumulated "gunk." (I don't know the medical term).

Crissy: emoticon about your knee. Hope it feels better soon. Maybe you are right about too much impact exercises. I know that the training plan I follow suggests only running 3X per week, so that all joints, tendens, muscles can heal on off-days. Cross training such as biking and walking are okay. But not spinning classes or stepping or anything that might strain the calf muscles.

Corrine: Foam Rollers are about 6 inches in diameter and can be 18 inches or 36 inches long. They come in different densities. They are for releasing the "gunk" within muscles and "un"tightening tight muscles. Sort of a deep tissue massage. A lot of people use them for their IT'band issues. I also roll my calves every day as those also tighten up from running.

Yesterday....
....beautiful day...ate a picnic lunch at a park in a city called Fairhope, Alabama...on Mobile Bay
...went to a running store and purchased new shoes.....

Today....
....probably 4 miles run-walk intervals + another 3-4 miles walking.
....suppose to be 71!!!

In this link Coach Nicole shows how to use one for your IT Band & talks about how it works.
In Sept I started having pain on the side of one knee or the other (they seemed to be taking turns) when I was running. I did a bunch of reading on it & figured out it was my IT. The band starts in your hip area & stretches to the side of your knee. When it's tight it rubs against the bones in your knee, which is where the pain comes from.
The foam roller is supposed to release that tightness. I sure hope it works - knee pain is the pits.

What is a foam roller and what is its purpose? Is it for your knees? I feel pain in my left knee from time to time - especially after doing aerobics, squats and lunges. It started getting sore last summer when I ran a down hill race. I just sort of ignore it and hope that it will go away because the thought of having to give up running makes me sick!

Yes Amy, I went to the doctor and PT. I'm still doing the exercises my PT gave me. Honestly, I'm thinking I'm doing too much. The running is fine but apparently I need to drop my aerobics classes completely. It's probably just too much impact on my knees, especially with me increasing my mileage. I was doing just fine until this morning!! It's amazing how quickly things can turn around with just one run. :( That's why I didn't want to sign up for the half so soon because I wanted to see how my training was going. I still have 2 months so hopefully things will resolve itself by then!! Thanks so much for the encouragement!!

Oh, NOOOOOOO!!!!! I've actually been thinking about you a lot this week. About how many problems you were having last year with your knee(s) & how great you've been doing. I was going to ask you to remind me on what you did to help them.
My advice: do what you did last time. I think you went to the dr. ?? ALSO, chin up, girl. You'll get through this just like you did before.
So sorry your hurting right now.

I should've known this wouldn't last long. I injured my knee (?) on this morning's run. emoticon I thought I had been having some minor IT band issues but I stretch and roll out on the foam roller, with just a little bit of stiffness in my knee here and there. No pain, nothing else to indicate there was a big problem. Today I don't know what I did differently but it HURTS, more than it ever has hurt before. It hurts on the side and sort of in the front, down the shin a little bit. I did some kickboxing yesterday but we didn't do much kicking so I don't know if that caused it or what, but I'm angry, depressed, sad, disappointed. I should've known that I would injure myself. I should've known this would happen after having so many injuries last year.

So, I'm taking tomorrow off completely and going to cycle on a stationary bike at the gym on Saturday and try to pick up with running 3 slow miles on Sunday. I'm also going to buy some KT tape and tape it up real good before running. I cannot let this get me down!!

And if anyone has any advice for me, I'd greatly appreciate it!!

My foam roller came yesterday. Yikes! But just the little rolling I did last night must have made a difference. This morning's rolling didn't hurt as much.

Hey team!

Lisa: So far the water bottles have not fallen off, but I can see how they easily could. Sometimes they are difficult to snap back in when running. I often put them back and recheck immediately to make sure they are not going to fall off.

Leanne: Just thinking about living that far north makes the inside of my bones cold.

Me...
Kind of bummed today and happy to. I got a Sparkmail from coach Jen about the new Virtual Racing site that Spark is sponsoring. I have been trying to make the team that I lead interesting and fun...it is called Virtual Racing II. With the beginning of this Spark VR, I doubt my little team will be needed anymore. Kind of a mix of feelings.

Today...
shopping and going to a Michigan snowbird club meeting and lunch at a park on Mobile Bay!!!

I'm almost right smack in the middle of the country in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We are about 3 hours North of the US border at North Dakota. Our winters are cold and very snowy, but our summers are an absolute dream - makes the winters worth it.

Seabreeze - Have you had any trouble with your amphipod water flasks falling off? That is the only complaint I have read about it, but there were a lot of people saying it. Thanks for the tip on washing the HRM belt. I bet you're right and it is an accumulation of salt that causes the irritation. I've been washing the elastic belt weekly, but I need to pay more attention to the plastic monitor part that caused the problem.

Hi All!!

Crissy: Under 30 min - WTG!!

Lisa: Yep, sometimes my HRM irrititates my skin also. I washed it good and it seemed to help. I guess I need to wash it more often. LOL!

Cindy: You are getting to be such a strong, fast runner.

BELTS: I have a spibelt and an amphipod belt. I like them both, but use them for different purposes. The amphipod is my water belt and has a larger pouch for stuff. The spibelt is good if I only need a few things and no water. Although I guess you can buy a water bottle that attaches to the spibelt.

I also use Sport's Beans but do not start eating them until about 60-75 minutes into my runs. I don't think I use up my stored glycogen as fast as other runners because I use run-walk intervals.

I bought and read a very informative book called Nutrition Timing for Peak Performance. A bit technical in parts, but really tells how much and when to eat before, during, and after runs of every distance and time.

Today is beautiful in southern Alabama!
Hoping all of you have a beautiful day too.!

The *general* rule about fueling on the run is that you should fuel if your run is over an hour. Take something (gel, chewie, piece of bar, dried fruit, whatever you are using) after 45 minutes and then every 20 minutes thereafter.

(That was from a discussion in the 13.1 forum and the same as I had read in my training book)

The longest I run right now is 6 miles and I've never stopped for drink or fuel. At what point does that become necessary?

Glad everyone is enjoying the improved weather! I am too, although my head cold is still so bad I can't fully appreciate it.

Crissy - I do love my Spibelt. It holds my blackberry, chapstick (and still has room for gels) and does not bounce at all. I don't even feel it on me. I do stash a water bottle, but it is on the trail I take from my neighborhood into the VNMP so I get it when I am finished. I know some people drive around the park to leave their water in a couple of places, but since I walk to get there... I just need to tote it with me. Wish there was a fountain somewhere along the park road!

Cindy - Which belt are you going with? I can't decide between the Nathan Speed 2 and the Amphipod. I'm glad you mentioned the Gatorade. I know that would be a problem for me and sometimes a station will have only Gatorade (or similar) and not water.

I have a couple of bags of sport beans, but haven't tried them. Sheesh I can't even remember to eat before I head out much less remember to take mid-run fuel. Sunday morning as I was waking up I was thinking about what I wanted to eat (1/2 banana and peanut butter). Got myself dressed and somewhere between walking out of my bedroom and into the kitchen I lost that thought, grabbed the dog's leash, water bottle and went out the door. A mile into my run I thought "oh dang I forgot to eat!". I started feeling it at mile 6. Talk about running on fumes! The only times I have eaten prior to running is on race days. I know I need to change that as I continue to build my mileage.

Hi all -

I use Clif Shots Gel (mocha) during training for over 7 or 8 miles and during the HM I used about 2 of them - breaking it into 4 times (meaning half of a shot every 3 -4 miles). I think this time I will just have 4 whole shots along for the ride. My mistake is not taking them early enough. I also carry a drink in a hand bottle (sorta has a loop to hang on my hand). In that I put half SOBE lifewater or vitaminwater and half water (I only like the zero calorie kind). I made a mistake in drinking the full gatorade at a water station on my last HM and it turned my stomach. Not used to that...

So - my take aways ( train with the drink you will use and only use it) (whatever refuel you like, be sure to use it steady throughout the race and training - not wait until you are crashing).

I am going to buy a water belt though this week and start training with it. I am at 7 miles now, so I think the timing is right for learning to get used to it so I do not have to carry the water in my hand.

Happy running all

Amy, yeah, I sometimes have to pee on our long runs and well, when you gotta go, you gotta go. emoticon I've tried holding it but it just makes for a painful run. ;)

Lisa, ouch!! I haven't had that issue yet. Do you like your spibelt?? I think I want one. For our longer runs, we just put out our Gatorade or water in a spot on the run before we head out (like in a bush on the side of the road) and we'll stop for a quick drink. You might want to think about doing that so you don't have to carry it with you the whole time.

Anybody using gels? If you do refuel, after how many miles do you do so?

Hi Ladies - look at all of you! Your pace, distance, everything - just so awesome!

Today I ran 6.2 miles and beat my PR maintaining an average 10:30. I ran it in 67 min with my sister in law by my side. She is half my age - literally! WOOHOO it was great to really run with her. I loved the run and one of the best parts was we finally got to run outside again! Gosh I missed that fresh clean air, the varying terrain, the joy of being part of the "running culture" of folks out there on a Sunday morning. It was tremendous. Afterwards we lifted free weights, smith machine, and cable Cybex - upper body mostly, though I threw a few squats in for that metabolism burning benefit.

Such a fabulous day - whole family at the gym - SIL and I on the trail then with them. I just love this.

I hope you all have a wonderful day - a wonderful week

Happy running!

Cindy

Looks like we are all out running in this fantastic weather. I did 7 miles and learned something new. I need to Glide up for longer distances. I've been using it on 4+miles under my bra strap right across the middle 2" of my back. Doesn't seem to bother me on shorter runs. I tried going on the tightest hooks, but that didn't help. Today I learned that I need it on my ribs under my HRM band. I have two rub spots that let me know that will be a problem in the future. And the Spibelt must go outside the shirt. Ouch. I have one bad chaffed spot and an entire line of rubbed irritation across my tummy. Made for an unpleasant first minute in the shower! I also realized that I need a fuel belt of some sort for carrying water. I had put this off during winter trying to figure out which one I would like, but I need to make a decision because I could have used it today!

8 miles is awesome!! I look forward to the day when I can celebrate the same. Currently I am plugging away at a 10k program... I am up to about 5 miles. I have a 10k race in June and should be in very good form by then and next year I'm planning on a HM. I have no aspirations to run a full marathon, but a half is something I definitely am looking forward to trying.

Amy & Corinne, glad y'all both got a run in!! emoticon And yay for no knee pain!!

I did 8 miles with 4 other girls yesterday morning. It was so much fun!! It was a very hilly course, though, and one of my friends had to take frequent walk breaks. And then I had to pee in the bushes twice. emoticon Even so, we managed an average of 10:20 pace. This morning I ran 4 miles, with the intent of really timing my 5k. I did it in 28:08!! And did my whole 4.1 miles in 37 minutes, all of this after a long run. So I'm thinking I can do a 5k in less than 28 minutes. I just need to find one in my area.

I hope y'all have a wonderful week!!!

I was finally able to get out and run this morning! The weather was perfect for a good run.

SeaBreeze when you do the run-walk-run method what is your ratio? Today I ran six five minute runs with 90 second walks. I got really tired (and a side ache) on my 6th interval. It has been several weeks since I was able to run so I don't know if that was why or if I'm trying to do too much - or maybe not even enough!

emoticon

I run just for the HEALTH of it!

Hi Team!

DELPHYNE: You did GOOD on your 8 miles. I know LSRs are suppose to be, well, SLOW. In my training I am suppose to run mine in about 15.5 minute/miles. What is great about this is that I recover so quickly. I am doing 10 every other week, but this will inch up to 15, 2 weeks before HM...not till May though.

Crissy: That is such a great pace - WTfly! And yes, a virutal race is just that...you time yourself on your own course and report in.

Hi Bailey and PinkBean

Kansas - Good job on that 6 miles!

Me...
...My PB for a 5K is just under 40 minutes. I cannot imagine moving these legs fast enough to ever get to 30 minutes. I've been running 8 months and I am better at endurance, but speed??? is another story. I did do 1 mile in under 12 minutes the other day. But I would not be able to maintain that. I felt like I was flying...

Weather
...suppose to be sunny and in the mid to upper 60's all week. Woo Hoo!!!

Have an awesome day everyone!

Ha Lisa, I doubt that! But we'll definitely need to meet up!

Kansas, woohoo!! Great run!!

I'd like to do my next 5k in under 28 minutes, at least that's my goal by the end of the summer. The last one I did in September was 28:47 so I'm thinking I can do it, but we'll see. I'm hoping to do one on March 12 but it's at the park and the park is such a pain to run in. emoticon It's very hilly and so narrow!! I would have to run it with no time goals in mind and just for the fun of it.

Crissy, We should meet up before the start of Renaissance otherwise you will finish the race and go home while I'm still running, LOL. You are doing so great with your speed! I've been under 10:20 for 5K & 10K. If I can stay under 11 for the HM I will be happy with that. I have a 7 mi for this weekend. My next 5K I would like to be under 30.

Kansas- Sometimes a nice run can help clear your congestion. Maybe it's the fresh air?
