thanks for the info Piglet!! that's helpful because I was more concerned since it has only been in the last 3 months that I've been so hyper sensitive. I'll ask the doctor about it tomorrow.

I'm hypo, diagnosed 3 weeks ago,but have always been very sensitive to smells. Maybe it has nothing to do with hypo/hyper but just depends on the person?

I, like many here, have always had a hyper-acute sense of smell. That being said, when my thyroid started to really wonk out, I actually developed a mild case of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) to fragranced products (fabric softener, cologne, candles, air fresheners), car exhaust, fertilizer, rubber, etc. I would get headaches, sore/raw throat, shortness of breath, itchy nose and throat, sweating, anxiety, etc.

Armour has eliminated these issues (and most other allergy symptoms) for me. Almost entirely. To be fair, I have also been taking a 2000-3000IU of Vitamin D daily, as well.

I can often detect smells before other people can. My mom had the same problem.

However, I don't often get the migraine symptoms from smells. I get more of a gag reflex.

Sometimes one of my students comes to school wearing cologne and my eyes water when I get near him.

Hmm--could be an allergy--I really hate the colognes too, but no signs of an allergy--yet! emoticon

I have been sensitive to smells since I was pregnant...17 years ago! Recently when I was in the hospital for surgery then for blood clots, I had several nurses and techs who wore strong cologne. I thought that I would pass out before they got out of the room. It was especially bad when they were taking blood and I was already queazy. Obviously people who don't have this issue really don't understand. If they did they wouldn't spray on a whole bottle at a time.

I've always been this way - hypersensitive to smells and sounds. But, my mom is the same way, so maybe it's genetic?

I've spoken to some co-workers who are really heavy on the cologne and just explained my situation. Most of them have been very considerate and avoid sitting close to me or wear less.

My senitivity has gotten worse with age (wondering now if it started with my change of life) Colognes bother me a lot and I have co workers who bath in it. I started putting vicks under my nose when the smells bothers me and it works great....no more problems

Oh FIERCESTCALM, you have just put me down to a tee!!
I totally have problems with smells!!! for me my triggers (for migraines) are ONION, GARLIC, RASPBERRY & BLACKCURRANTS, EUCALYPTUS, BODY ODOR and other strong smells.. It hits me instantly and i get a blinding headache, and get nauseous.. its horrible..

I have to take some medication to stop the migraine and try to get some fresh air..

I'm 31 and yep it's definitely a possibility that the hormones are off. I know for sure I'm not pregnant and like I said I've always been sensitive to some smells but it's gotten so bad in the last 6 weeks that women walk by me in stores and I'm hit instantly with these feelings of intense nausea, headaches, hot flashes, sweating and general dizziness. It's the fact that it seems to be a much stronger reaction lately and the fact that there is definitely and increase in my sensitivities that has had me questioning this.

I only did this when I was pregnant. I'm not saying that you are but is it possible that your female hormones are messed up? Not certain of your age but perimenopause perhaps?

Hi - I'm new here! I just wanted to let you know that I've been high and low and everywhere in between the last 6 years and I have a very sensative nose. My last TSH was 1.0 which is fine but the one I had before that was 0 so I've been a little messed up lately. It does seem to me that no matter what level I'm at I still have a sensative nose.

Have been hypo for many years and have never had any problem with smells. Some meds can cause an alteration or sensitivity to odors-like some of the anti-depressant meds. Cancer patients have reported an alteration in odors sometimes permanent due to the Chemo drugs. Some folks just have a sensitivity to odors-my husband is one who is hyper-sensitive.

Hi all,
My body is totally messed up right now. Waiting on the bloodwork from Thurs to come in and I see my endo (that I LOVE) on Tuesday next week to discuss all my weird symptoms.

My most recent (1.5 weeks ago) TSH came back at .13
I'm wondering if since I'm more in the hyper range now if that could cause the severe reactions to smells that I am experiencing. I've always been sensitive to certain smells (sun ripened raspberry, sweet pea from bath and body work are a few) but it has gotten WAY worse lately. I always get NASTY headaches (migraine like), hot flashes, sweating and nausea when I am around a smell that is triggering a bad reation. Just wondering if this is another one of those fun thyroid symptoms or if something else is going on. Definitely not pregnant and this has been going on for more than 6 weeks.
