oh yeah, i know when all my friends go on or change birth controls bc they all get bigger hips and boobs. lol. i was on nuva ring.
i mean, if you think about it, it kind of makes your body think it's pregnant, so it makes sense that you might gain.
It doesn't happen to everyone though.

Marymoo,

My Mom's also at 50mcg of Synthroid. I never thought about BC as a factor in weight gain, but I was on it for 13 yrs until I wanted to start a family. I had to start it at 16 due to horrible monthly cycles.

sandy. I KNOW it's something in the water, but i always thought it was from the sanitation plant on the west side of buffalo!
I grew up right on the niagara river.
my mom was just diagnosed hypo last year. shes on 50 mcgs of synthroid.

I actually had graves disease. I was diagnosed when i was 16. had my thyroid removed when i was almost 18.
I'm 28 now.
I didnt really start gaining weight until i went on Birth Control when i was 23. I gained 30 lbs in 6 months and its never all come off (the most ive lost is 15 lbs.)
then i got pregnant and i gained another 30 lbs.
I was stuck at 190 or 191 (unless i had my period, then i was 195.)
I just got switched to 2.5 grains of armour and within 2 weeks i had lost 4 lbs - the 1st weight loss in months!
But then i got my period last night and this morning i was 192. i know its just water weight, but it's so annoying and discouraging. i hope it will come off within the next week or so.

MARYMOO,

I grew up in W Seneca and of three children, two have developed Hashimoto's and one had a tumor of the parathyroid removed. My oldest brother had his thyroid removed 1/2 at a time, and I am in the process of determining if mine needs removed. My Mom was diagnosed as hypothyroid just a few years ago - she's 89 now and who knows how long she needed meds. I was diagnosed as hypothyroid in grade school(I'm 58 now), then told at age 16 I didn't need meds anymore(what did I know?), then when I started having kids, my thyroid went haywire. After being re-diagnosed, I needed 275 mcg of Synthroid to get my bloodwork good. However, I had a chronic weight problem. Every time I tried and lost weight, it all came back on, plus more. It wasn't until I started taking Armour that the weight came off and stayed off. I've lived in Olean, an industrial area, for over 30 years, and I know SO many people here who are hypothyroid. I'm fairly certain the water here is fluoridated, so I have been filtering my water for at least the last 10 years.

No, but I noticed that I lived in a hotspot for nuclear testing fallout in the 1950's. A connection? Maybe. . . . .

I have lived, albeit briefly, in relative proximity to a nuclear campus. However, I think it's almost impossible in the modern world to completely avoid exposure to endocrine disruptors, short of living in a bubble. Plastics, pesticides, fluoride, bromide, heavy metals, synthetic compounds, etc., etc. I think the best we can do is eliminate or limit the risk factors that are within our control. Exposure is cumulative, so minimizing the body burden in small ways on a consistent basis makes a big difference. For my part, I avoid fish and seafood, tap water (as Wulfie mentioned), fluoride-containing oral products, chemical laden personal care products, processed foods and conventional produce.

Never lived near a nuclear plant but just read some info on a nutrition site about the toxic effects of perchlorate that has infiltrated the drinking water. It has a very bad effect on everything especially thyroid. I ALWAYS drink bottled spring water or filtered water- we have a filter-never just tap water. Who knew in this great USA that we would have to be concerned about being poisoned by our own supposedly "clean" water? Real Shame...

Interesting. There's one in our state but it's probably 100 - 150 miles away.

I've never been near any of the influences that any of the other posters in this thread indicate they have been near. I was born on an island, moved to a clean community on the mainland and have always had clean air, water and no power plants around.

I grew up with alot of influences. My mom gave us fluoride supplements. We used to sit on the roof and watch a crop duster go over us. There's a place nearby that pumps toxins into the ground of all things! A nuclear plant within my home and college. There's lots of influences all around us. All we can do is try to cope and watch what we do ourselves and join in with letters to our government representatives about what we don't agree with. Watch the perchlorate plumes in your area.

i grew up near an industrial area.
not nuclear, but they burn toxic materials all the time. ppl in the neighborhood are actually suing, and the owner of the plants may be facing jail time.
my area in Buffalo, NY is known for it's thyroid disorders. even the men get it, and its usually a female thing.

There is on going research that is showing a relationship between nuclear power plants and thyroid conditions. I am just wondering if anyone here lived/lives in close proximity to one? where I grew up in NJ there are several and so many I know from back in high school are suffering thyroid disease now.
