It's a sight! Right now, I've got this crown of fine hair - truly a sight in the morning. I've used a Bed Head styling gel and I liked it.

I have to say, I have super curly hair and it does not do well long... it just grows out. Now, if I could find a decent stylist who could get the layering right, I could probably do it, but right now, I don't have that. I have said to stop cutting the layers -- letting it grow, because for years now it's been shorter than I want because it's how many "repaired" some really bad cuts.

Course, if it's one length I can straighten it, but while I like the ease, it's really a time consuming process...

Thats so cool about your hubby's hair! Lucky girl that you are!
The only grey hair I've ever seen was on our family Schnauzer and others of the breed... never on a human.

Live and learn, I suppose.

Not sure what it is with the thinning on the top, but thats where mine is too. IMO it a variant of female pattern baldness... problems with the testosterone in our bodies. Minoxidil might help. Here's something about it... scroll down to "Symptoms".

PS... I've never seen a strand of grey hair on anyone's head. When I've been close enuf to look, its always white hair mixing with a darker color that gives the appearance of grey... its a phenomena called "optical mixture" or unscientifically "salt and pepper". Check and see if his hair strands are actually grey and not white mixed with a darker color.

UNI: 5 (five) colors!!!! Wow! I'd love to see that!

MZZ: It sure looked like my hair was thinner on top, when it was long. I have fine hair, but lots of it. However, I'm noticing fine silver hair in places. I finally figured out that my hair was silver and fine vs DH's hair which is thicker and gray.

Right now, I'm letting it grow out. So, I wear a head band. After a while the headband bothers me. I've tried different methods of keeping it out of my eyes. Seriously considering cutting it short again. Seems the best all-weather style.

Wow - you guys really got carried away on this one! Too funny!

In the day when I colored my hair (I gave up - the skunk streak reappeared to quickly. My hair grows too fast) I had to use a "neutral" color. The auburns turned my gray more of a florescent orange. They have stuff now you can color the new growth with, but they do not always have colors to match. So mine is a mixture of grey, white, silver, brown and black. In that order! Funny that the color is mostly on the top, with nearly all grey underneath!

Oh BROTHER! I can't believe your beautician told you that!!
She prolly also believes that if you trim the end of you hair, it will grow faster and thicker! ha

That might be true of bushes, who often sprout numerous new branches from further down a cut branch, but its not true of hair, which, like our nails, is not living tissue.

People who wear their hair in cornrows, or have extensions (which sometimes utilize a braiding system similar to cornrowing), or keep their hair pulled tightly back in a bun or pony tail... all those situations can put to much tension/torsion on the hair shaft resulting in hair loss.

But a long hair just hanging there? uh, no. ha
Well okay mabbe if it was like 20 feet long...

emoticon

Hair thinning is caused by harsh styling methods, heat, pulling on it (which breaks it), or nutritional deficiencies like low iron or protein, b vitamins, silica, etc, genetics or hormone issues (like perimenopause/menopause,d- testosterone), autoimmune issues (alopeicas).

Yes, hair IS curlier when its shorter!
In this case your hairdresser would be correct about the weight of the hair pulling the curl out.

You sound totally organized, Elisa with your coin system. BRAVO!
I adjust my hairstyle according to task, weather or whim and avoid the mirror at all costs!

Sorry for the book I've written here... LOL

DEB: No worries. This is the fun of the Q of the W.

I used to have long hair, (past the middle of my back). However, a beautician said that the length was pulling on my hair shafts and making them thinner.

My hair seems to be curlier when short, too.

MZZ: That's long hair. My neighbor, about my age, has long hair. She won't let anyone get near her with a pair of scissors! When I had long hair, I made up a 'diagram'. I used a 50-cent piece for tracing, and drew different styles on each piece. Then, I'd look at that to figure out which way would be best to wear my hair for the day.

Ha, ya, we're being super naughty today... must be bc Halloween's not far off... hey that's my excuse and I'm stickin with it!

: )

Debs I love long hair because I think its super easy to take care of and you can wear it so many different ways. Plus you're not tied to a hairdresser's whims/mistakes, there's no recurring expense. I hate having people fussing over me, touching me. uh. When its long you can just trim the ends yourself, too!

The only problem is waiting for it to dry after a shower when you need to sleep or go somewhere like the Opera or Symphony where damp hair is not a good look... although I've been guilty of that too... I just flip it over once its dried and shake it out and I'm done.

MZZ, I used to wear my hair long - long and thin, until I had to start coloring it. Back in the 80s I had perms and big hair. Ugh! Now I keep it short because it is much easier to take care of especially when we are spending so much time outside,

@Elisa... your hair question...mine is currently midway down my back, at the Bra Junction, and a lot darker than it is in my sig photo, which was taken in sunlight which lights anyone's hair up like optical fiber! ha.

My sig pic is about 2 years old and waaaay better looking than I am. ha

I'd love it to grow to my waist, but my short anagen cycle, genes (& prolly Pointy, too!) prevent that that from happening!

Hope ya'll are having fun today...

LOL!! I wore that crown in a 5K run a couple weekends ago! The only reason it stayed on my head is that it was cold and I had a head band keeping it on! The stupid boa feathers kept getting in my mouth so I was running and spitting out feathers. But it was a fun race for a good cause (women's charities in Missoula)

Is your hair blonde, Eliza?
If so, possibly, over time... but I think you'd have more control if you just used a commercial hair color.

I use a bit vitamin C in my body lotion when I get out of the shower.
Gotta be careful, bc if it gets on a towel or my bath mat and I put the towel in the hamper it will oxidize to yellow brown... marks which resemble something else (use your imagination, I'm NOT gonna answer THAT question! ha).

My sister was a lifeguard, she and my mom had that problem of their blonde hair turning green.
Its not the chlorine, its actually the deposition of copper in the hair.
Oxidized copper is green, the copper comes from the pipes, the water and sometimes algae-cides put in the pool... the chlorine just lifts the cuticle so that the copper can be deposited there and it might even be responsible for oxidizing it.

Incidentally a very inexpensive way of neutralizing chlorine... is to use powdered ascorbic acid... ie vitamin C. Just mix a half teaspoon in a glass of warm water, pour over your hair and its POOF gone that fast. Vitamin C is what municipal water companies use when they have to release chlorinated water into the environment, bc its fast, easy and inexpensive.

After the C rinse, rinse out the C, shampoo and condition bc oxidized vitamin C is brown orange.

A form of C is what's in some of those lotions that give your skin a "glow".
Not self tanners, but those ones that make your skin just a shade or two sunnier.

Curly... relaxed.

It's super curly, which I've learned to live with and even embrace a bit, however, I wouldn't mind if the curl relaxed a little bit. It can get quite fluffy.

EconLady - check the salon quality shampoos. There are some really good ones for removing chlorine. Back in the day when I swam, I got a little green as well, but only the stylist noticed. A good clarifying shampoo is key - I think I used Paul Mitchell back then.

I like your style, Rhal!

And you're 100% correct... grey hair is actually white... not grey. It just looks that way when you're a brunette and it mixes with the darker colored hair.

I've always wanted to be a natural platinum blonde... the problem is that by the time I get there, I'll prolly be in my 90s! ha

straight - fuller

To those who are covering the gray - I've given up and I am already light hair colored - it is not worth the trouble to me - and as someone else stated I've earned every one of those natural changes - I say mine are not gray - they are silver so that gives them each a "value" that I've earned.

@ debby.. the red pigment is the smallest molecule so it comes out from under the cuticle in the hair shaft most easily.

If you like red hair and you want to make yours thicker and shinier, with no harsh chemical process and cover your grey in the process, you might want to try a henna product. Hairdressers won't go for this and try to talk you out of it, bc it doesn't work with other chemical processes like relaxing, perming, bleaching or coloring bc it seals the cuticle of the hair.

There are also tinted shampoos and conditioners that can keep your hair color looking fresh longer. I don't know the brands but I have seen them in Walmart, so they must be relatively common... if they still make 'em.

Messy and washed. (It is the first thing in the morning. I will wash it when I shower!!)
Color it?? No way!
My hair is light brown with many gray highlights. I figure I earned every gray hair on my head.

Mine just doesn't hold color longer than 2 weeks period - mine's light brown. I know it would do better if I went to a salon to have it done, but I can't afford that. Thinking seriously about letting it go gray.

Change colors?

Years ago, I 'trained' my hairstylist for perms. Then, she got pregnant and left work. :-( Was totally bummed! Took YEARS to get the perm just right and BAM, she was gone!

Isn't finding a hairstyle that you like one of the worst! I am more attached to my hairstylist than my doctor!

I don't know why my hair wont hold the red. But my DD#2 is the same way.

DEBBY: emoticon

Another story: I had to move back home to take care of my ailing dad who suffered from heart problems. I would end up calling 911 in the middle of the night. AND, we all know that most of the Responders were male! So, I had a hair style that I could just fluff on the run.

Why does your hair not hold the red coloring more than 2 weeks? I've been thinking of wanting some type of a rinse that would color my gray hairs, if there's one out there.

JC: I had a job that would take me outside for a few minutes each day. So instead of having to comb my hair every single time, I had a style that already looked windblown.

With ONE word, describe your hair as it is currently?
Then with ONE word, describe what you'd like your hair to look like?
