KRIS, that kind of reminds me of the way our bank deposits zip through a tube from outside at my car and into the bank, though that may not be exactly what you're talking about.

CAPECODLIGHT, it's great to hear that you have frequently seen people offer seats to others and to you (you're not old!). When I was a child, a man or boy would offer their seat to any woman, no matter her age.

It's nice to know people still have manners in some places. In my 20's, I went to Boston twice with my husband on business trips and remember using the T. The main thing I remember is that we were all packed together, as the car was full, and I had never been on a subway before - or any mode of transportation where I was literally shoulder against shoulder to a stranger. Like you, I did find the people to be helpful when we asked directions, etc., even though one waitress in a well known restaurant was very surly - LOL.

Another thing, and this is no biggie, but when did it start being okay for men and boys to wear hats indoors?

I wanted to comment on the manners. I have used the T in Boston many times (not the friendliest of cities) and have frequently seen people offer seats to others, including to me - I always get a bit flustered, as I don't think I am old - lol.

Manners (or lack of) is a big one.

I remember a couple big department stores I went into, but not very often, as a young child and the money would be sent up to the office in a little box on a motorized pulley type of thing, and the change coming back down the same way LOL!

Renia, manners is a really good one!! emoticon

Just the other day, my husband and I were talking about how, in the old days, if you were on a bus or in a waiting room and a woman (particularly an elderly or pregnant woman) was standing because there weren't enough seats, a man or boy would offer their seat to her. Men, especially young men, just don't do that anymore. And there are so many other instances of lack of manners.

Oh, Janice, yes - those Charles Chips were so yummy!! We didn't get them, but my best friend did and I'd get to eat them at her house. I used to play with marble and jacks. When we visited our grandparents, we'd walk to an old country store where we could buy "penny candy." We could get a LOT for 25 cents! Good times!!

Those are great ones, Ellen! emoticon emoticon

Another one I thought of is "five and dime" stores. I know we have dollar stores now, but it's different. I worked at a dime store when I was a teenager and we sold everything from sewing supplies to underwear.

Wow! I had to really think about that, but this is what I came up with:

- white gloves in summer for women and girls
- leg hose
- hats for men and women (I love hats and never wear them)
- can-cans
- slips

What’s something from your childhood that used to be common but now is pretty rare?

We used to have a window fan when I was a child. This was before air conditioning. I haven't seen one in years. As kids, we would stand outside the window and "talk" into the fan to hear our voices vibrate. I liked the way it sounded when falling asleep - almost like the ocean.
