Seeking solace in a confusing time emoticon

I find this comforting.

Excerpted from Job 5
New American Bible RE

6 For not from dust does mischief come,
nor from the soil does trouble sprout.
7 Human beings beget mischief...
8 In your place, I would appeal to God,
and to God I would state my plea.
9 He does things great and unsearchable,
things marvelous and innumerable.
10 He gives rain upon the earth
and sends water upon the fields;
11 He sets up the lowly on high,
and those who mourn are raised to safety.
...
12 He frustrates the plans of the cunning,
so that their hands achieve no success;
13 He catches the wise in their own ruses,
and the designs of the crafty are routed.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime,
at noonday they grope as though it were night.
...
17 Happy the one whom God reproves!
The Almighty’s discipline do not reject.
18 For he wounds, but he binds up;
he strikes, but his hands give healing.
19 Out of six troubles he will deliver you,
and at the seventh no evil shall touch you.
...
26 You shall approach the grave in full vigor,
as a shock of grain comes in at its season.

We do lose tone faster than we do lose lbs! Especially when being obliged to stay home. Wise of you to slow down. You will catch up!

I intended to do the exercise ( did the 22 min. back pain relief in the last few days and the hands exercises instead) and did not get around to do the sitting exercices. Now i am warned.

LOL I overextended in my first energetic effort at doing the sitting thing 10 times! I am now doing 3 at a time, 2 or 3 times a day. This extended stay at home thing has had more of a negative effect on me than I understood.

Aging Backwards/Essentrics

Here’s where I am at with this.

1. Make a fist exercise - I have been doing this daily for about a week

2. Standing up from chair - I just added this today and was surprised at the effort it takes! Too much at-homeness!

In my 4 1/2 years of being on Spark, I have been active in only two teams, 100 Days of Weight Loss and this one. I have been active on and off with Spark coaching and have gone through most of the 30 day challenges.

Candidly, I don’t buy that a structure to our eating negates the principles of Intuitive Eating. The argument that Spark is a diet site, so we shouldn’t have an IE team is specious at best, in my opinion. If this program doesn’t fit the explanation below, I don’t know what does.
****
THE SPARKPEOPLE PROGRAM: DAY 1
Welcome to the Program
The SparkPeople Program is a comprehensive approach to a healthy lifestyle change. While many fad diets focus only on the food you eat, the SparkPeople Program aims to steadily improve all aspects of your life in sustainable ways. SparkPeople is different because our team includes behavior change experts in addition to health and fitness experts. As a result, our program integrates the best of health and fitness (elements that help your body) with goal-setting, motivation, leadership and behavioral psychology (elements that help your mind).
*****
It’s also clear this is a process.
From the IE book chapter 4:

“Keep in mind that the journey to Intuitive Eating is a process complete with ups and downs... we have seen that our patients go through a five-stage progression in learning how to become Intuitive Eaters...

STAGE ONE:
READINESS—HITTING DIET BOTTOM ... You have lost touch with biological hunger and satiety signals.

STAGE TWO:
EXPLORATION—CONSCIOUS LEARNING AND PURSUIT OF PLEASURE... This part may feel scary and you may choose to move slowly (within your comfort level).
####Ski’s comment- ‘within your comfort level’ is one reason I am adamant about it being ok to having a structure to eating while working the IE program. ####

STAGE THREE:
CRYSTALLIZATION... You have a greater sense of trust—both in your right to choose what you really want to eat and in the fact that your biological signals are dependable. You are more comfortable with your food choices and will start to notice increased satisfaction at your meals.

STAGE FOUR:
THE INTUITIVE EATER AWAKENS... Your food talk and self talk will be positive and noncritical. Your peace pact with food is firmly established and you will have released any conflict or left-over guilt about food choices that you have carried around. You will have stopped being angry with your body and making disrespectful comments about it. You will respect it...

STAGE FIVE:
THE FINAL STAGE—TREASURE THE PLEASURE ...Because you feel good about your relationship to food and treasure the pleasure that eating now gives you, you will discard unsatisfying eating situations and unappealing foods. You will want to experience eating in the most optimal of conditions and not taint it with emotional distress. You will feel an inner conviction to give up using food to cope with emotional situations, if that has been your habit. You will find that you would much rather deal with your feelings or distract yourself from them with anything other than food, when emotions become too overwhelming.”

****
I’ve picked out these thoughts to review as I think about this team.

“Intuitive Eating then becomes the foundation for developing a new and safe relationship with food and, ultimately, with body.” from the preface to IE book

***************

“I am on “Ski’s plan”. I try to eat 90% fuel, 10% joy. For me, my mind - what I think, the assumptions I make, the resultant emotions I have, how those emotions affect my eating - these are what have caused my “weight problems”. I try to review the IE principles list each time I come to the team site and find it very helpful.” Me Oct 2019

***************

“It's me... Monica. I've been here a while and finally getting the IE lifestyle down. Not perfect, but definitely getting a better understanding and it certainly makes more sense than anything else out there. Not easy to unlearn years of bad habits, but for sure, it's the lifestyle that follows real life more than any other out there.” Monibelly Oct 2019

***************

“Yes, I have the “diet mentality”
- Both Intuitive Eating and Dr. Butler make it clear that weight loss may not be an early result of the work. That disappoints me. I still want instant results!
- It’s more secure to continue to use outer constraints (WW) than developing inner ones.
- I still have some echoes in my mind of dividing food into good and bad rather than nutritious (fuel) and non-nutritious (joy).
- I’m still weighing.

Castillo, Butler and IE all emphasize that changing our mindset is basic to their methods. That takes work. Ok.” Me Aug 2019

Comments 2/25/20
I no longer have the good food/bad food thing.
I think of WW more as a wide guide than as a diet.

**************

“Introducing myself (sort of!)...I’m following Mindfulspark26 over from 100 Days team. I am an introvert and don’t even share my Spark page, but the principles of Intuitive Eating are items with which I totally agree and toward which I am actively working. I do WW online and have been successful but don’t think I have gotten to where I want to get to. Long ago, in a Weight Watchers meeting, I said that I “wanted to have a normal relationship with food.” The leader (and others) laughed somewhat derisively. However, it is still my goal and I think that is totally consistent with Intuitive Eating.” Me July 2019 when I joined the IE team.

***************
“So far in my listening, I think what Dr. Deb Butler is saying in her podcast is entirely consistent with learning or relearning to eat intuitively. I’m actually going back and relistening because she is not presenting information so much (in the early episodes at least), as guiding listeners through an experience.

Points from episode 1:

Relearning trusting ourselves around food.
Inner(our knowledge of our needs) vs. outer (diets, WW) direction.
Every time you start to eat, ask yourself, “Am I hungry?”
Evert time you finish eating, ask yourself, “Am I full?”
For a week, just ask these questions and notice the answers, nothing more.
Just notice; don’t make judgments.” Me July 2019

When we are so worried about something that we expect it to happen, we come dangerously close to be inadvertently planning it...we will act more in line with the event happening than not happening.

How am I doing on each IE principle?

1. Diet mentality - I’m on-line WW but I don’t think of it as a diet but as working on my way of eating.
2. Hunger - I am doing well at waiting for being hungry.
3. Make peace with food - Doing very well, I think. As few artificial ingredients as possible, low sodium when possible.
4. Food police - I have few problems anymore with food police, especially those in my head.
5. Fullness - Since I feel disappointed when I am full, I don’t think I respect it yet!
6. Satisfaction - I do love my food! Maybe I haven’t discovered the “satisfaction factor “ yet if I feel disappointed when I am full.
7. Feelings - Feeling disappointed makes me think maybe I am using eating for entertainment. Need to think about this.
8. Body - Yes, I do respect my body.
9. Exercise - I like to move.
10. Health - I am blessed as to my health and I appreciate that.

I am not eating from -2 to +2. I am eating before I really am hungry and then eating past full. I am not tracking everything.

When I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m slightly full, I don’t need to track.
When I eat as above, I need to track.

I am up 3.2 from my lowest recent weight.

I found this in my notes. I like it still.

The more I am successful in being compassionate towards myself, the more I see food and it’s benefits as positive, contrary to my entire life.

Being alive is a food trigger!!

emoticon emoticon

Seriously, that's a good thing. I find that I have sometimes have a positive , even affectionate response to food and even toward food triggers - much like toward this kitty and puppy. And like anyone knows who has raised a puppy or kitty, you have to be kind, firm, gentle and guiding toward them, much like training and taming the food responses and triggers. You have to clean up some messes along the way. You have to find techniques to get them to understand when they need to go outside or use the litter box. You discipline but don't beat them up.

I’m going to put some of my thinking work here that doesn’t seem to fit elsewhere. Feel free to comment or put your own thoughts here as well.

I decided to start doing one day a week where I don’t count points, even in my head if possible. Since I had an event yesterday, I started then. I got on the scale this morning. The number was exactly what it was yesterday. I suddenly realized I felt disappointed! How interesting. I didn’t see that coming. So I did the Model (Copyright Brooke Castillo, Inc 2013, also used by Dr. Deb Butler) to find out what I was thinking that would cause that feeling. I first filled in the C and F lines and then discovered the thought I had. Huh!

Circumstance- scale same
Thought - the scale should have gone up then I could forget doing this work
Feeling - disappointed
Action
Result

Yes, I have the “diet mentality”
- Both Intuitive Eating and Dr. Butler make it clear that weight loss may not be an early result of the work. That disappoints me. I still want instant results!
- It’s more secure to continue to use outer constraints (WW) than developing inner ones.

- I’m still weighing.
